Flower Sprouts
This past Friday I got some Flower Sprouts at the local farmers market. These are new to me, I’ve heard of them and seen them in seed catalogs but I’ve never seen them before. They are a cross between brussels sprouts and kale and that’s exactly what they look and taste like.
I settled on making them just like I make broccoli salad. Warm bacon, red onions, mustard, walnuts, dried cranberries red wine vinegar, yogurt, olive oil, and splash of maple syrup and they were perfect for dinner!
I hope these are at the market all winter because they were great. They won’t appear in my garden, I don’t usually have much luck with brussels sprouts or the longer season brassicas. I’m happy to simply buy them from a local farm. If you’re interested in adding them to your garden next year you can buy seeds from Johnny’s Seeds.

Susy, you are so adventurous even in trying new vegetables. There’s no new vegetables in my garden. I’m still trying to perfect growing the standard vegetables. I grow what I know is in demand from neighbors and friends. If I get outside of the tomato, green pepper, cucumber, sweet corn, squash, eggplant realm, I either have to eat it myself or compost it. Most people are not too willing to be adventurous in food. I’m not so much a picky eater. The new thing with many of my friends now is food allergies. The allergies include dairy, gluten, even some can’t eat red meat because of a Lonestar tick bite. I suspect that if many would get down to the basics in food consumption, they would be ok but after a life time of eating what they want, they just don’t want to change. It’s kind of sad what’s happened to our food chain.
I’m dropping off the grid for a few days. We, my daughter and I, are going to visit Bradley again this weekend. We’ll be back next Tuesday. I don’t do media when I away from home.

Those look tasty! I have to admit though, I tend to avoid growing anything very curly because it’s too hard to find all the little bugs when washing.

They sound tasty! I love brussel sprouts, I’ll have to look around for the flower sprouts. Fortunately, our Farmer’s Market here is still bringing abundance, with our mild weather (and they have greenhouses, too).
