ROMAN GOLD EAGLE STANDARD

SPQR is an acronym from a Latin phrase, Senātus Populusque Rōmānus ("The Senate and People of Rome"). The Roman Eagle was the national animal, and graced the standard of each legion. A standard-bearer would carry the eagle with them, and it the standard fell or was lost, it had to be retrieved at all costs. (cafepress, 2014)
