Desmond FitzGerald, the Knight of Glin and president of the Irish Georgian Society, inherited Glin Castle in County Limerick when he was 12 years old, in 1949. The house, which has been in his family for 700 years, was in disrepair. "Glin Castle, County Limerick, Ireland, is the ancestral home of the Knights of Glin. The original ruined Glin Castle, besieged in 1601, lies nearby in the village of Glin. The present castle was built in the 1780s by John Bateman FitzGerald, 23rd Knight of Glin, using the dowry of his wife, Margaretta Maria Fraunceis Gwyn. The house is said to have cost more than £6,000, which plunged the Knight of Glin into serious debt.
