This was surprising, as it was supposed to last for decades. The oil we originally applied was nearly gone and definitely not the right choice of finishing product.

During some frantic research, I discovered that the trees traditionally used for yakisugi in Japan are much oilier than what we had access to here. This allows the charred wood to last for 80-100 years. 

Thankfully, I ended up finding a company called Viking Sales/Solvent Free Paint that pine tar—a natural wood preservative made in Sweden, often referred to as Stockholm tar.
