It's interesting to me that in Beowulf the Dragon had been asleep or bored, or not committing crimes against humanity for so long that it lay forgotten in it's hoard. But then a servant steals away with so much as a cup and it's time for the Dragon to rage it's vengeance on Beowulf's countrymen. I'm sured Tolkien was inspired by this to awaken Smaug when little Bilbo Baggins saunters in as a thief and takes the Arkenstone.
