Size reduction

I don't know when this was suggested but I will get the ball rolling. It's hardly surprising that it's gotten so large as it covers merch from four years ago to the present day, and is still expanding.

First thought is to divide into years and subdivide into seasons.

Or create a new list of the Pokémon Center monthlies.

Or divide into sets, or just create new articles for the longest entries. Finger (talk) 01:24, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

I assume you accidently used an emoji and it deleted the rest of your comment.
As this size reduction involves a complete overhaul of the way the TCG merchandise is represented on the website, it's something that will involve a significant amount of planning. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them, but a project this large will most likely involve a staff enacted plan to ensure it's completed in a way that's best for the website. Seeing Scarlet & Violet merch grow quickly now too, I agree some action needs to be taken. I think the division into sets, years and/or seasons may unnecessarily complicate things w.r.t. watching pages and keeping track of creating new extra pages for merchandise. Additionally, many of merch are not set-specific so it might be awkward to try to squeeze them in as such.
My idea is to divide the merch by merch type. It would mean a structured set of new pages that replace the current merch page. Additionally, I think it makes most sense to browse merch by type.
We would just need to establish sensible merch types to go along with.
Please let me know how to best discuss and move forward on this. Maybe Discord is a better place? (note I'm yoctozepto there)

I do have thoughts about this page, and how it can be cut down. First, although this would be part of a much wider shift that I've mentioned before elsewhere, perhaps we should consider whether set pages would be a good place for products that are specific to that set; the primary products I'm thinking of here are Build & Battle Boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, Theme Decks, Blister Packs, and perhaps the portfolios and collector albums as well. That's not including all of the additional products for the five special sets. All told, that's almost 150 sections on this page, which could be replaced with 17 links (one per set) or 17 sections with a "main article" link.
Some other ideas I had at first glance:
  • Would the Poké Ball tins warrant having their own page? It looks like there are now 10 series (5 on this page alone) and some related products.
  • Trainer's Toolkit 2020 and 2022 don't have their own pages, which would probably be beneficial for them.
  • Perhaps the First Partner products (jumbo packs and binder) would benefit from their own page?
  • Sections with an existing "main article" link (such as most/all V Battle Decks) could have their content moved into the main article, and removed from here.
These are just off the top of my head, but I would be curious to know if any of them are worth consideration. Cipher (talk) 12:51, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Generally, other sites about card games (Yugipedia comes to mind first), treat each individual collection of merchandise as their own notable topic with their own pages. Instead of trying to find some un-ideal middle ground between what we're doing and what most other sites do, we could just shift to what is known to work. MaverickNate 02:00, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
I second this.MissDelibirda (talk) 18:16, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
Makes sense to me. Landfish7 12:00, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
