Sometimes when I get an obsession is comes out of left field and hits hard. This is the case with my current love affair with antique quilts. I've always liked them, and have a couple of nice examples, but all of a sudden a few days ago I realized I really really want to collect them, in a big way. First, they're very useful- you never know when you'll need an extra blanket. Secondly, they're gorgeous and each one is unique. Finally, how can you deny the amazing craftsmanship and hours upon…

One of my friends was intrigued by a postcard of a patchwork coverlet which was in the collection at St. Fagans: National History Museum, near Cardiff. I wasn't similarly smitten as I thought it looked rather chaotic and badly designed. Nevertheless I asked Elen Phillips, the Keeper of the quilts at the museum, if we could see it if an opportunity arose. One day I received the call! Sue Prichard from the Victoria & Albert Museum was visiting St. Fagan's to choose suitable items for last…

What a whirlwind two weeks it has been for Teri and me! We hit the ground running at the Birmingham Festival of Quilts and didn't stop until Teri hopped on a plane to return home. With all that activity behind us—trips to France, castles, and cathedrals—posting about the amazing quilts we saw at the quilt show is now possible. There were so many wonderful quilts, that it would be challenging to show them all in one post. Today's quilts are from the exhibit hosted by the British Quilt Study…

Patchwork made of imitation patchwork in Pennsylvania Dutch style From 1940 to 1970 the folkloric look was a prominent trend in American decorating. The Tyrolean-style feedsack above celebrated Swiss rural costume, frozen in time... Franz von Defregger Young Man in Tyrolean Costume, 1872 which was mixed with the Pennsylvania Dutch nostalgia. Feedsack A new generation of artists and collectors who'd grown up with Pennsylvania Dutch/Tyrolean kitchen curtains began collecting an edgier…

Civil War Quilts: 1862 Crib Quilt: Questions Antique Quilt Patterns Civil Wars, Reproduction Quilts, Crib Quilts, Vintage Quilts Antiques, Quilts Vintage, Doll Quilts, Primitive Quilts, Civil Wars, Half Square Triangle Quilts

Small flag quilt Date inscribed 1862 38 1/4" by 32 1/4 " This quilt has been in my file of quilts related to the Civil War for several years. It's been handled by a few antique dealers and was auctioned at Sotheby's last year. The date of 1862 in the lower right corner is part of the quilt's value. I haven't felt completely confident about the date that is embroidered (?) on one of the flags. 1862 is inscribed in the stripe of one flag. The overall quilt-style just doesn't look 1862. If it…
