Contest for Alien Contact edited by Marty Halpern

Yesterday Marty Halpern treated us to his thoughts on story order in an anthology.  Today he's given you lucky visitors two chances to win Alien Contact.  The first chance is for US residents only, one print copy of Alien Contact, signed and dated by the editor, and inscribed if the winner wishes.

The second part of the contest is for NON-US residents one of which will receive an ebook edition of the anthology: the winner gets to choose either MOBI or EPUB format. (Note: there is a difference between the print and the ebook editions: the Stephen King story is not included in the ebook due to rights issues.) Here is the blurb for Alien Contact:
Are we alone? From War of the Worlds to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, ET to Close Encounters, creators of science fiction have always eagerly speculated on just how the story of alien contact would play out. Editor Marty Halpern has gathered together some of the best stories of the last 30 years, by today's most exciting genre writers, weaving a tapestry that covers a broad range of scenarios: from the insidious, to the violent, to the transcendent.

Alien Contact include stories by Paul McAuley, Neil Gaiman, Karen Joy Fowler, Mike Resnick, Orson Scott Card, Ursula K. Le Guin, Nancy Kress, and Charles Stross.
To enter the first part of the contest send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name, physical address as the print book will ship via UPS, and "CONTACT" in the subject line. To enter the second part of the contest for the ebook edition still send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name in the body and "CONTACT 2" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight December 31st. I'll announce the winners on the following day or as soon as I remember. One entry per part per person is allowable, but if more then one each will get you disqualified from the contest. The winners will be selected via random number generator per usual.

Contest for Awakenings by Edward Lazellari

Thanks to Tor I have 2 hardcover copies of Edward Lazellari's debut Awakenings, which hits the shelves tomorrow.  Awakenings might easily be classified as an Urban Fantasy, but it is much more than that. As I mentioned in my reading log recently I was greatly reminded of the Amber books. Worlds within worlds, the magical mixing with the technological all play a part in the world Lazellari has created. Here is the blurb to whet your whistle:
Cal MacDonnell is a happily married New York City cop with a loving family. Seth Raincrest is a washed-up photographer who has alienated even his closest friends. The two have nothing in common—except that they both suffer from retrograde amnesia. It’s as if they just appeared out of thin air thirteen years ago, and nothing has been able to restore their memories. Now their forgotten past has caught up to them with a vengeance.

Cal's and Seth’s lives are turned upside down as they are stalked by otherworldly beings who know about the men's past lives. But these creatures aren't here to help; they're intent on killing anyone who gets in their way. In the balance hangs the life of a child who might someday restore a broken empire to peace and prosperity. With no clue why they're being hunted, Cal and Seth must accept the aid of a strange and beautiful woman who has promised to unlock their secrets. The two must stay alive long enough to protect their loved ones, recover their true selves—and save two worlds from tyranny and destruction.
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address in the body and "AWAKE" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight September 13th. I'll announce the winners on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the everyone. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. The winner will be selected via random number generator per usual.

Contest for 7th Sigma by Steven Gould

Thanks to the generosity of Tor I have 2 copies of Steven Gould's recent release 7th Sigma up for grabs. Gould should be no stranger to most of you as Jumper has become a Sci-Fi classic. 7th Sigma is something of a homage to Kipling's Kim and takes a big lead form the serials of the 30's and 40's. Here is the blurb for 7th Sigma:
Welcome to the territory. Leave your metal behind, all of it. The bugs will eat it, and they’ll go right through you to get it…Don’t carry it, don’t wear it, and for god’s sake don’t come here if you’ve got a pacemaker.

The bugs showed up about fifty years ago--self-replicating, solar-powered, metal-eating machines. No one knows where they came from. They don’t like water, though, so they’ve stayed in the desert Southwest. The territory. People still live here, but they do it without metal. Log cabins, ceramics, what plastic they can get that will survive the sun and heat. Technology has adapted, and so have the people.

Kimble Monroe has chosen to live in the territory. He was born here, and he is extraordinarily well adapted to it. He’s one in a million. Maybe one in a billion.
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address in the body and "SIGMA" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight August 5th. I'll announce the winners on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the US residents only. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. The winner will be selected via random number generator per usual.

Contest for Tim Akers' Jacob Burn Cycle

To celebrate the recent release of Tim Akers' Dead of Veridon I have one set of both Jacob Burn books from Solaris including Heart of Veridon to giveaway and a single copy of Dead of Veridon as well. So you've got two chances to get in on the Steampunk Noir-tasticness that is Tim Akers crazy mind. Be sure to check out my thoughts on Heart of Veridon to see why this is a series worth checking out.  Here is the blurb for Dead of Veridon, but you might want to skip if you haven't read HoV:
Trouble finds Jacob Burn. Kicked out of his house, out of his comfortable life, out of everything that is familiar, even turned away from his circle of criminal friends and interesting enemies. Two years after he saved an ungrateful city from a mad angel, thwarting the plans of every powerful faction in Veridon, Jacob is still trying to pull his life together. And still trouble finds him.

A bad job goes worse, and soon old enemies present themselves as allies, and former friends set themselves against Jacob as he tries to put the dead to rest and the living to justice. Everything gets more difficult when he’s appointed by the Council to investigate the rise of the cog-dead, while some hold him personally accountable, and others in the city work to use the chaos to their advantage.
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address in the body and "VERIDON" in the subject line along. The deadline is midnight June15th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the US residents only. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. The winner will be selected via random number generator per usual.

Contest for Bradley Beaulieu's The Winds of Khalakovo

Through the vagaries of the mail system I have ended up with an extra copy of Bradley Beaulieu's debut The Winds of Khalakovo, which I'm putting up for grabs. This is the first in a new Fantasy series called The Lays of Anuskaya from Night Shade, which is heavily influenced by Russian culture. Beaulieu also credits A Game of Thrones as a big influence on his work. Here's the blurb for The Winds of Khalakovo to whet your appetite:
Among inhospitable and unforgiving seas stands Khalakovo, a mountainous archipelago of seven islands, its prominent eyrie stretching a thousand feet into the sky. Serviced by windships bearing goods and dignitaries, Khalakovo's eyrie stands at the crossroads of world trade. But all is not well in Khalakovo. Conflict has erupted between the ruling Landed, the indigenous Aramahn, and the fanatical Maharraht, and a wasting disease has grown rampant over the past decade. Now, Khalakovo is to play host to the Nine Dukes, a meeting which will weigh heavily upon Khalakovo's future.

When an elemental spirit attacks an incoming windship, murdering the Grand Duke and his retinue, Prince Nikandr, heir to the scepter of Khalakovo, is tasked with finding the child prodigy believed to be behind the summoning. However, Nikandr discovers that the boy is an autistic savant who may hold the key to lifting the blight that has been sweeping the islands. Can the Dukes, thirsty for revenge, be held at bay? Can Khalakovo be saved? The elusive answer drifts upon the Winds of Khalakovo...
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "WINDS" in the subject line along. The deadline is midnight April 16th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the world. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. The winner will be selected via random number generator per usual.  Look for a special post tomorrow from Bradley.  Also, there are still a couple days for the Bledsoe and Henderson contests.

Contest for Brooklyn Knight by C.J. Henderson

I have three copies of Brooklyn Knight by C.J Henderson up for grabs from Tor Books. This is the first in a new Urban Fantasy series with the second Central Park Knight coming out this May.  Here's the blurb for Brooklyn Knight to whet your appetite:
Professor Piers Knight is an esteemed curator at the Brooklyn Museum and is regarded by many on the staff as a revered institution of his own if not an outright curiosity. Knight’s portfolio includes lost civilizations; arcane cultures, languages, and belief; and more than a little bit of the history of magic and mysticism. What his contemporaries don't know is that in addition to being a scholar of all things ancient he is schooled in the uses of magical artifacts, the teachings of forgotten deities, and the threats of unseen dangers.

If a mysterious object surfaces, Professor Knight makes it his job to figure it out--and make sure it stays out of dangerous hands.

A contemporary on an expedition in the Middle East calls Knight's attention to a mysterious object in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum … just before it becomes the target of a sorcerous attack that leads to a siege on a local precinct house by a fire elemental.

What looks like an ordinary inscribed stone may unlock an otherworldly Armageddon that certain dark powers are all too eager to bring about--and only Piers Knight stands in their way.
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "BROOKLYN" in the subject line along. The deadline is midnight April 9th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the world. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. Winners will be selected via random number generator per usual. REMINDER: The contest for all three of Alex Bledsoe's Eddie LaCrosse series is still on-going.

Contest for Two Complete Sets of Eddie LaCrosse Adventures by Alex Bledsoe

It has been a while since we had a contest here so I thought it was high time we got something going and this one is going to be quite a catch for two lucky readers.

Today is the release day for Dark Jenny the third Eddie LaCrosse novel. To celebrate I have two sets of the Eddie LaCrosse adventures by Alex Bledsoe up for grabs from Tor Books. This has been one of my favorite on-going series of the past couple of years. Each novel is standalone, but they do play off one another with some tidbits from one leading to the next. Included in each pack is a mass market of The Sword-Edged Blonde, a hardcover of Burn Me Deadly, and a trade paperback of the just released Dark Jenny. Quite a odd mix of formats, but they are the latest available. And this is a series that is meant to be read no matter the format.

To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "LACROSSE" in the subject line along with your favorite literary detective. The deadline is midnight April 9th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the world. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. Winners will be selected via random number generator per usual.

Tor Steampunk Prize Pack Contest

And the Steampunk goodness continues.  From Tor Books I have one Steam Themed Prize pack.  It contains The Half-Made World by Felix Gilman, Dreadnought by Cherie Priest, and The Osiris Ritual by George Mann. I already lauded Dreadnought pretty highly earlier this month and I'm a third through The Half-Made World, which isn't so much Steampunk as a cross of Weird West and Dieselpunk. On the originality scale Gilman is scoring very high marks.

To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with "TOR STEAM" in the subject line and your full name and snail mail address as a message. The deadline is midnight October 29th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open only to people in the United States. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest.

If you haven't read some of the guest essays for this month get to it.  Paul Jessup's piece on The Future of Steampunk is well worth taking the time for as is Mark Hodder's essay on the appeal of Steampunk.

Pyr Steampunk Grab Bag Giveaway

Through the generousity of Pyr Books I have 2 Steampunk prize packs. Each contains: The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder; The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, 1) by Clay & Susan Griffith; The Horns of Ruin by Tim Akers; and The Buntline Special by Mike Resnick. This is a great assortment of books and gorgeous to boot. I've already read The Horns of Ruin and it is even more action packed than Akers's first effort.  I'm a few chapters into The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack and loving every page so far.

To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with "PYR STEAM" in the subject line and your full name and snail mail address as a message. The deadline is midnight October 16th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open only to people in United States. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest. Since The Buntline Express is a December release the prizes will not be sent out until it is available, but this will give you plenty of Christmas time reading.

Keeping checking back in all this month for more Steampunk goodness.  And if you haven't read Mark Hodder's essay on the appeal of Steampunk please do.  It sets the tone quite nicely for what is to come. More giveaways are a foot as well.

Contest for Tome of the Undergates by Sam Sykes

Tome of the Undergates is a fun romp through murky waters from the fiendish mind of Sam Sykes. The US release is about a week away and the kind folks from Pyr have offered up 2 finished silvery copies of Tome of the Undergates for our lucky readers. Plus I'm throwing in my galley copy as well. So that is three chances for all of you. Here is a bit from my review earlier this year:
If it is gritty Fantasy you've been dying for than Tome of the Undergates will certainly be the answer for you as Sykes has made the name Adventurers out to be a vile thing with his debut effort.
To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "TOME" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight September 7th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the people of the United States. Contest for Brent Weeks / Greg Bear flip Chapbook

I have a two copies of the Brent Weeks and Greg Bear mini-flip book that Orbit was giving out at Book Expo this year.  I grabbed two not realizing it was a flip so that's more for my fine readers.   The Weeks half is the first three chapters of The Black Prism and the Greg Bear portion is the first four chapters of Hull Zero Three. Happy Blog-o-versary! & Giveaway

I knew the one year anniversary for Mad Hatter's Bookshelf was coming up, but I nearly forgot now that it is here. It was a year ago today that my first review went up and now with more than 170 posts, 80 book reviews, a dozen interviews, which includes one going up later today with Neal Asher, it looks like I'll be continuing on for the foreseeable future. I like to think this blog has come a long way since that review and has gained a good following in so short a time.  One of my goals when I started was to keep this a regularly updated site and even though it has been a struggle at times I've kept it up.  My run of at least one book review a week stands even though there have been some close calls.   My writing has improved, which was another goal although this is always a work in progress.  But ultimately my wanting to spread the love of all the books I read beyond my small circle of friends seems to be working out as well. And I've had loads of good discussions with many of you for which I want to thank you all for with a special shout out to my wife who nudged me along the whole way.

To thank my loyal and new readers I'm giving away an ARC of Ares Express by Ian McDonald and one mystery book. A second place winner will also be chosen for a mystery book. To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "BLOGOVERSARY" in the subject line. Also, include whether you are more of a Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Urban Fantasy fan, which I'll use to give the winners a list of books from my vast library to choose from for the mystery book. These could end up being almost anything. The deadline is midnight April 21st. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the people of the United States only. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest.

Contest for Christopher Moore's Bite Me

I have two hardcover copies of Christopher Moore's newest vamp book Bite Me courtesty of Harper and Wiredset.  To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "BITE ME" in the subject line. Also, include who your favorite Moore character is.  The deadline is midnight April 9th. I'll announce the winner on the following day or as soon as I remember. This contest is open to the people of the United States only. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest.

Let’s take a look at vampires, shall we?

There’s Nosferatu: a violent, brainless, insatiable scavenger out for blood...

Polidori’s Vampyre, Lord Ruthven: a handsome, aristocratic, sexually exciting figure with a hypnotic stare...

Bram Stoker’s Dracula: enigmatic, erudite and evil...

Ann Rice’s Lestat: sensitive, sensual, and emotional...

Stephanie Meyer’s Edward: beautiful, beguiling, and vegetarian…

And then there’s Christopher Moore’s vampires in his latest novel, BITE ME: A Love Story: Jody, a fiery redhead who used to work in insurance and her consort in blood C. Thomas Flood, a former Safeway stock boy who wants to be a writer.

BITE ME wraps up the outrageous adventures begun in You Suck: A Love Story and Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story. In it, Jody and Tommy live the undead life in San Francisco with their sidekick, Goth girl Abby Normal, otherwise known as Allison Green, and her bio-chem Ph.D candidate boyfriend, Steve “Foo Dog” Wong. The thing is, Jody and Tommy are imprisoned in a bronze shell in the pose of Rodin’s The Kiss.

Meanwhile, Chet, a giant shaved vampire cat and his recently turned meowing minions are on the prowl. As Abby says, “There’s nefarious shit afoot, Foo. Bring portable sun and fry these nosferatu kitties before they nom everyone in the hood.”

BITE ME is an inventive, hysterically funny, sophisticated comic horror novel with flamboyantly original (and endearing) characters, pitch-perfect postmodern dialogue, break-neck pacing, and utterly entertaining vignettes. BITE ME readers have a lot to sink their teeth into.

Contest for Two Jonathan Barnes Books

Once the toast of good society in Victoria's England, the extraordinary conjurer Edward Moon no longer commands the respect that he did in earlier times. Still, each night he returns to the stage of his theater to amaze his devoted, albeit dwindling, audience, aided by his partner, the Somnambulist—a silent, hairless, hulking giant who, when stabbed, does not bleed. But these are strange, strange times in England, with the oddest of sorts prowling London's dank underbelly. And the very bizarre death of a disreputable actor has compelled a baffled police constabulary to turn once again to Edward Moon for help—inevitably setting in motion events that will shatter his increasingly tenuous grasp on reality.

I have a hardcover copy of both The Somnambulist and The Domino Men by Jonathan Barnes to give away to one lucky person. The Somnambulist  is more of a Historical Thriller while The Domino Men has a Lovecraftian flare to it yet both are placed in the same world and have some recurring characters.  To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "BARNES" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight February 26th. I'll announce the winner on the following day. This contest is open to the people of the United States and Canada only. If you send multiple entries you will be disqualified from the contest.

Winner of Mr. Shivers

The lucky fellow who won Mr. Shivers by Robert Jackson Bennett is Bill O. from Birmingham, AL. Thanks to everyone who entered.  Weird fact:  Someone with the last name Shivers actually entered the contest, but the random number generator went another way.  Look for another contest shortly as I continue to thin the ranks on my shelves, which just keep getting filled back up again.

Contest for Mr. Shivers by Robert Jackson Bennett

It is the time of the Great Depression.

Thousands have left their homes looking for a better life, a new life. But Marcus Connelly is not one of them. He searches for one thing, and one thing only. Revenge.

Because out there, riding the rails, stalking the camps, is the scarred vagrant who murdered Connelly's daughter. No one knows him, but everyone knows his name: Mr. Shivers.

In this extraordinary debut, Robert Jackson Bennett tells the story of an America haunted by murder and desperation. A world in which one man must face a dark truth and answer the question-how much is he willing to sacrifice for his satisfaction?

To celebrate yesterday being the most visited day ever on Mad Hatter's Bookshelf I have an ARC of Robert Jackson Bennett's horror debut Mr. Shivers to give away to one lucky person. To enter send an email to madhatterreview (AT) gmail (dot) com with your full name and snail mail address and "SHIVERS" in the subject line. The deadline is midnight February 12th. I'll announce the winner on the following day. This contest is open to the people of the United States and Canada only. Winner of Moxyland

The winner of Lauren Beukes's Moxyland is Travis from SLC, Utah.  Congrats!  Look for another contest later this week as I continue to clean the shelves a bit.

Win a Copy of Lauren Beukes's Moxyland

I have one galley copy of Moxyland by Lauren Beukes up from grabs.  This is a rare chance to get a book which won't be out in the US until May.  I received this copy last year and it just wasn't for me after all was said and done.  But I want to give someone else a chance to read this cyberpunk tale who may love the book as a few others have.  Here is the short description:

Moxyland is an ultra-smart thriller about technological progress, and the freedoms it removes. In the near future, four hip young things live in a world where your online identity is at least as important as your physical one.
