We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives bench... more We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for pp and pA collisions at the LHC against which the AA rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. We also provide an assessment of the theoretical uncertainties in these benchmarks. We then discuss some of the cold matter effects on quarkonia production, including nuclear absorption, scattering by produced hadrons, and energy loss in the medium. Hot matter effects that could reduce the observed quarkonium rates such as color screening and thermal activation are then discussed. Possible quarkonium enhancement through coalescence of uncorrelated heavy quarks and antiquarks is also described. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the LHC detectors to measure heavy quarks and quarkonia as well as the Monte Carlo generators used in the data analysis. 2 Authors: S. Frixione, M. L. Design of a wireless sensor network with nanosecond time resolution for mapping of high-energy cosmic ray shower events

We describe a low-cost, low-power wireless sensor network we are developing for high time-resolut... more We describe a low-cost, low-power wireless sensor network we are developing for high time-resolution (ns-scale) characterization of particle showers produced by ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays, to infer shower direction at sites where hard-wired data connections may be inconvenient to install. The front-end particle detector is a scintillator block monitored by a photomultiplier tube (PMT). We keep the sensor nodes synchronized to within 1 ns using periodic highintensity optical pulses from a light-emitting-diode (LED) overdriven at very high current (~30 A) in short (4 ns) bursts. With minimal optics, this signal is resolvable under free-space transmission in ambient light conditions at multi-meter distances using a high-speed avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver at each node. PMT pulse waveforms are digitized relative to this precise time reference on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using a Time-over-Threshold (ToT)/Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) digitizer developed at BNL. A central server receives timestamped, digitized PMT pulse waveforms from the sensor nodes via Wi-Fi and performs real-time data visualization & analysis. Total cost per sensor node is a few thousand dollars, with total power consumption per sensor node under 1 Watt, suitable for, e.g., solar-powered installations at remote field locations.

A number of critical active and passive components of optical links have been tested at 77 K or l... more A number of critical active and passive components of optical links have been tested at 77 K or lower temperatures, demonstrating potential development of optical links operating inside the liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector cryostat. A ring oscillator, individual MOSFETs, and a high speed 16:1 serializer fabricated in a commercial 0.25-µm silicon-on-sapphire CMOS technology continued to function from room temperature to 4.2 K, 15 K, and 77 K respectively. Three types of laser diodes lase from room temperature to 77 K. Optical fibers and optical connectors exhibited minute attenuation changes from room temperature to 77 K.

This paper reports on the latest efforts of the MARIACHI 1 program at Stony Brook University, a u... more This paper reports on the latest efforts of the MARIACHI 1 program at Stony Brook University, a unique endeavor that detects and studies ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. This is done by using a novel detection technique based on radarlike technology and traditional scintillator ground detectors. Using the phenomena of cosmic rays and meteors as vehicles to motivate research and educational activities, innovative hands-on modules in physics, engineering and cyberinfrastructure based on a learning by doing philosophy are offered to high school teachers and students. Participants at all levels are engaged in research projects, seminars, and workshops, where they will learn to use tools needed in MARIACHI by means of mobile technology.

This work addresses the development of algorithms for online automatic detection of meteors using... more This work addresses the development of algorithms for online automatic detection of meteors using radar technique. In time-domain, the optimal filtering technique is applied. In frequencydomain, two possibilities are being studied using Short-time Fast Fourier Transform: narrowband demodulation and cumulative power spectrum analysis. The filter detecting system using the power spectrum analysis achieves 94.2% efficiency for a false alarm rate of 6.7% over 1,500 seconds of data, which could avoid to record 3.45 GB of noise every 24 hours.

The use of a monostatic radar for the detection of cosmic rays was first suggested by Blackett an... more The use of a monostatic radar for the detection of cosmic rays was first suggested by Blackett and Lovell in 1941. Over the years that followed it became clear that this type of radar would require extremely high power transmitters and high gain antennas for its operation. The low Radar Cross Section (RCS) is due to the details of electromagnetic wave scattering by the ionization electrons in the dense terrestrial atmosphere. A less known type of radar, bistatic radar, exhibits a strong enhancement in the RCS at forward directions. We present results of expected received power calculations for a bistatic radar used in the detection of extensive cosmic ray showers. The rapid movement of the shower front followed by extinction of ionization by electronegative oxygen contributes to the formation of a phase modulated signal at the receiver. The signal frequency versus time signature is characteristic for the ionization produced by extensive cosmic ray showers and will provide an optimal discrimination against spurious events.

A passive Radio Detector System is proposed for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays showers and meteors... more A passive Radio Detector System is proposed for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays showers and meteors detection. TV emissions, reflected by ionization clouds produced in such events are acquired producing a clearly detectable profile. A Radio Detection station is operating at BNL recording signal samples from a group of three antennas. An offline analysis, here described, allows for event selection and feature extraction. An event rate consistent with the earth rotation 24 hours periodicity could be found. Auxiliary detectors are being built to validate the results obtained so far.
