St. Luke records a genealogy of Jesus soon after his baptism at the Jordan River by the hands of John the Baptist (3,23-38). St. Matthew has another genealogy for Jesus, but he begins his gospel with this genealogy. These are the two and only genealogies of Jesus found in the NT. Both are unique and different in many ways, although there are a few similarities. Henry A. Sanders says that the reconciliation and interpretation of these genealogies of the Lord Jesus had been a subject of earnest discussion since the time of Sextus Julius Africanus in 240 A. D. He is one of the scholars of early times in the studies of NT genealogies and he, with regard to the Lukan genealogy, suggests that it is 'extremely awkward.' Luke, being the dear and glorious physician as we acknowledge from our rich Catholic tradition, is one of the attractive evangelizers. His gospel of Jesus is an inclusive gospel, where Jesus in evangelized as the universal saviour, and he pictures Jesus as the 'merciful face of God.' The theology of Luke is ever outstanding and it is able to kindle and rekindle in anyone's heart the fire of Jesus' love. The parables of 'Good Samaritan,' (10,25-37), 'The Prodigal Son' (15,11-31) and the story of Zacchaeus, are a few of the heart touching traditions that are found only in Luke. After following a course on the 'The Missionary Speeches in the Acts of the Apostles' by Prof. DEAN BÉCHARD, sj., my regard for the evangelist Luke increased. I wanted to analyze a piece of work in his gospel, and this genealogy, mostly left unread by many Christians, caught my eye.

Though the downfall of these kingdoms took place at different time in the history (722 BC and 597 BC), the way they are recorded in the Book of 2Kgs posits much similarities, and these similarities seem conveying a very strong message to the readers. Analyzing the narrative language, vocabularies, style and tools, we could imagine many intentions and teachings of the post exilic editor/s, that are to be conveyed to the people who have lost their hope in the near future. The concept to Deuteronomistic history of Martin Noth inspires many ideas if we analyze these stories in one Deuteronomistic history-story line.

There are presently significant Christian missionary communities in places that are hostile to the faith, where the Christian witness experiences also the tragedy of martyrdom on a daily basis. They can refer to the living example of the Apostles to properly understand the missio ad gentes of the Church sent into the world for its salvation and transformation. Missio Ad Gentes in the Acts of the Apostles is addressed to these young Churches, as well as to the Churches of older tradition.
