The term "upon" is a preposition frequently encountered in the Bible, signifying a position of being on top of or in contact with a surface. It often conveys the idea of authority, responsibility, or a specific action taking place. In the Berean Standard Bible , "upon" is used in various contexts, each carrying significant theological and spiritual implications.

1. Divine Authority and Command: The use of "upon" often indicates divine authority or command. For instance, in Genesis 1:2, "The Spirit of God was hovering upon the surface of the waters," illustrating God's sovereign presence and creative power at the beginning of creation. This highlights the divine authority over the cosmos and the initiation of life.

2. Judgment and Consequence: "Upon" is also used in contexts of judgment and consequence. In Exodus 12:12, God declares, "On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both man and beast—and I will execute judgment upon all the gods of Egypt." Here, "upon" signifies the direct action of God's judgment against the Egyptians, emphasizing His justice and the fulfillment of His promises to Israel.

3. Blessing and Favor: Conversely, "upon" can denote blessing and favor. In Numbers 6:24-26, the Aaronic blessing includes, "The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you." This usage underscores the bestowal of divine favor and grace, reflecting God's benevolence and the covenant relationship with His people.

4. Prophetic Fulfillment: The term is also used in prophetic contexts, indicating the fulfillment of God's promises. In Isaiah 9:6, it is prophesied, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders." This prophecy points to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and His ultimate authority and rule.

5. Human Responsibility and Action: "Upon" can indicate human responsibility or action. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells His disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden." This metaphorical use of "upon" calls believers to live visibly righteous lives, reflecting God's light to the world.

6. Spiritual Empowerment: In the New Testament, "upon" is used to describe the coming of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." This signifies the empowerment of believers for witness and ministry, marking the beginning of the Church's mission.

7. Eschatological Significance: In Revelation, "upon" is used in eschatological contexts, often describing events of the end times. Revelation 6:8 states, "And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! Its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with famine, with pestilence, and by the wild beasts of the earth." Here, "upon" indicates the scope and impact of divine judgment during the tribulation period.

In summary, the preposition "upon" in the Bible is rich with meaning, often denoting authority, action, and presence, whether divine or human. Its usage spans from creation to eschatology, underscoring key theological themes such as God's sovereignty, judgment, blessing, and the fulfillment of His promises.

CLOTHED UPON

klothd, (ependuo, "to put on over" another garment): Used only in 2 Corinthians 5:2, 4. In 5:4 in contrast with unclothed, compare 1 Corinthians 15:53, in which the idea of putting on, as a garment, is expressed of incorruption and immortality. The meaning here is very subtle and difficult of interpretation. In all probability Paul thinks of a certain envelopment of his physical mortal body even in this life ("in this we groan," i.e. in this present body), hence, the force of the prefixed preposition. The body itself was regarded by the philosophers of his day as a covering of the soul, and hence, it was to be clothed upon and at the same time transformed by the superimposed heavenly body. Ependutes, an outer garment, is used several times in Septuagint for me`il, an upper garment or robe (compare John 21:7).

JUDAH AT (UPON) THE JORDAN

(yehudhah ha-yarden): A place marking the eastern limit of the territory of Naphtali (Joshua 19:34). It is generally thought among scholars that the text is corrupt; but no very probable emendation has been suggested. Thomson (L B, II, 466) proposes to identify it with Seiyid Jehuda, a small white-domed sanctuary about 3 miles to the Southeast of Tell el-Qady.
