Tibhath is a location mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically in the context of King David's military campaigns. It is referenced in 1 Chronicles 18:8, which details the conquests of David as he expanded the territory of Israel and secured its borders against surrounding nations.

Biblical Reference:

1 Chronicles 18:8 : "From Tibhath and Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a great quantity of bronze, with which Solomon later made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and various bronze articles."

Historical and Geographical Context:

Tibhath is identified as one of the cities belonging to Hadadezer, the king of Zobah. Zobah was a significant Aramean kingdom located in the region of modern-day Syria. The kingdom of Zobah was known for its wealth and military strength, making it a formidable adversary to Israel during the reign of King David.

The capture of Tibhath, along with Cun, is part of David's broader campaign against Hadadezer, which is chronicled in both 1 Chronicles 18 and 2 Samuel 8. These campaigns were instrumental in establishing Israel's dominance over the Aramean states and securing peace and prosperity for the nation.

Significance in Biblical Narrative:

The mention of Tibhath highlights the strategic and economic importance of David's victories. The bronze taken from Tibhath and Cun was later used by Solomon, David's son and successor, in the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem. This connection underscores the continuity of God's plan for Israel, as the resources acquired through David's conquests were utilized in the building of the Temple, a central place of worship for the Israelites.

The bronze Sea, pillars, and various articles crafted from the materials taken from Tibhath symbolize the wealth and splendor of Solomon's reign, as well as the fulfillment of God's promises to David regarding the establishment of his dynasty and the building of a house for the Lord.

Theological Implications:

From a theological perspective, the account of Tibhath serves as a testament to God's providence and faithfulness. David's military successes are seen as divinely ordained, with God granting victory to His chosen king. The subsequent use of the spoils in the Temple construction further illustrates the theme of divine provision and the centrality of worship in the life of Israel.

The narrative of Tibhath, therefore, is not merely a historical account but also a reflection of the broader biblical themes of covenant, kingship, and the unfolding of God's redemptive plan through the nation of Israel.

TIBHATH

tib'-hath (tibhchath; Metabechas, Codex Alexandrinus Matebeth; Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390-405 A.D.) Thebath; Peshitta Tebhach): A city of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, from which David took much of the brass used later by Solomon in the construction of the temple-furnishings (1 Chronicles 18:8). In 2 Samuel 8:8 we must for the beTach of the Massoretic Text read with the Syriac Tebhach. It may be the same as the Tubihi of the Tell el-Amarna Letters; the Dibhu of the Karnak lists; and the Tubihi mentioned with Kadesh on the Orontes in the "Travels of an Egyptian" in the reign of Rameses II. The site is unknown, but it must have been on the eastern slopes of Anti-Lebanon, between which and the Euphrates we must locate Hadadezer's kingdom of Zobah. "Tebah" occurs also as an Aramaic personal or tribal name in Genesis 22:24.
