Stephanie Novasio
My AHRC-funded doctoral research focused on ageing and the Life Course (lifecycle) in the medieval eastern Mediterranean (1204-1453). Drawing on theoretical approaches from the social sciences, I examined how the stages of the Byzantine Life Course were constructed and represented across a range of textual, visual, and archaeological evidence. I am particularly interested in the role of age - and its intersection with gender and social status - in formulating medieval identities. To date, I have published multiple book chapters on themes ranging from the construction of literary identities in Byzantine romance to the intersection of (feminine) gender and crime in Byzantium.
