I’m a research scientist working to better understand the biology of aging, autoimmune diseases, and cultured meat. I received my Ph.D. in Medical Sciences at the Lab for the Biology of Aging with a focus on genomic and transcriptomic determinants of longevity. My expertise includes project design and management, data analysis and interpretation, and the development and implementation of research tools. I enjoy generating new ideas and devising feasible solutions to broadly relevant problems. Currently, I’m working on a few challenging projects in the private sector and academia, including a potential treatment for autoimmune diseases, automation of lifespan experiments, and aging gene signatures.

Health and pathologies are multifactorial states characterizing how well biological systems funct... more Health and pathologies are multifactorial states characterizing how well biological systems function in a range of conditions and facing various stressors. Depending on how flexible the definition of a state is, systems may have multiple healthy and stable states. However, keeping homeostasis requires parameters dynamically fluctuating within a physiological range. On the molecular level, states depend on the combined effect of a myriad of genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors, and in response to a time-varying signal from the exposome, the system may transit between states of health, states with better or worse fitness, and disorder states. In this chapter, we discuss how differences in heritable components, repair mechanisms, and exposure to events in early or adult life, influence healthspan, longevity and susceptibility to pathologies. We also review the genomic, methylomic, transcriptomic and metabolomic changes that accumulate with age, and discuss them as potential drivers of shifts towards pathological phenotypes. Lastly, we hypothesize that transitions are generally small and slow during ageing and more dynamic in disease emergence or progression, with both cases being characterized by system-wide changes in the expression and function of their components, the topology of their interactions, and the system’s overall robustness.

The lungs are particularly susceptible to fibrotic pathology which is currently difficult to treat. The mouse bleomycin-induced fibrosis model was developed to investigate lung fibrosis and widely used over the years. However, a systematic analysis of the accumulated results has not been performed. We undertook a comprehensive data mining and subsequent manual curation, resulting in a collection of 213 genes (available at the TiRe database, www.tiredb.org), which when manipulated had a clear impact on bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis. Our meta-analysis highlights the age component in pulmonary fibrosis and strong links of related genes with longevity. The results support the validity of the bleomycin model to human pathology and suggest the importance of a multi-target therapeutic strategy for pulmonary fibrosis treatment.
