Bucket wheel excavators, spreaders, mobile crushers, movable belt conveyors and other machines on... more Bucket wheel excavators, spreaders, mobile crushers, movable belt conveyors and other machines on open pit mines are huge tracked vehicles with slow speed of movement. To be able to move on mine's terrain, the machines are equipped with crawler mechanism for support and transport. Crawler chain serves for transformation of rotation of drive tumbler to linear movement of tracked vehicle. This transmission mechanism is with variable mechanical coupling, and usually consists of multi motor drive. In extreme operating regime, during steering along the curve, the load of the drive on the outer crawler significantly increases. This additional load originates from the additional friction forces between the crawler plates and the soil, turning torque of the inner and outer crawler and the torsion of the substructure of the mining machine. Travel drive on open pit mine machines is multi-motor drive, consisting of two, four, six or more... more Travel drive on open pit mine machines is multi-motor drive, consisting of two, four, six or more motors. This drive is the most demanding drive on the open pit mining machines. The single drives are cross-coupled through terrain, which is rugged and inhomogeneous, making the quasi-stiff mechanical coupling. This is the reason why the relation of coupling between the individual drives permanently changes during motion, in an unpredictable way. During the driving along the curved path, it is necessary to provide significantly different speeds for individual motors. Special problem is the fact that lean on the ground is achieved through crawler tread, which introduces significant gaps in the transmission system. The required uniform load distribution between individual motors is provided by the control system.

1 Abstract-This paper shows an analysis of torque ripple reduction in modified DTC algorithm by u... more 1 Abstract-This paper shows an analysis of torque ripple reduction in modified DTC algorithm by using multiple voltage vectors with the appropriate multilevel hysteresis controller. A short theoretical background of classical and proposed DTC algorithm was given at the beginning. Experimental results of the proposed DTC algorithm, implemented on digital signal processor F2812, were analysed in comparison with classical DTC. It is shown that the torque ripple can be reduced by selecting voltage vectors with an appropriate intensity. Motor current oversampling was used to analyse the estimated torque behaviour during one DSP sampling period. Furthermore, the analysis of torque ripple reduction with oversampled torque values was conducted in relation to the number of available voltage vectors. The analysis shows that the proposed DTC algorithm allows significant torque ripple reduction while retaining the simplicity, small computational burden and good dynamic characteristics of the classical DTC.

Load equalization for high-power induction motors by speed control in limited range

The paper presents a new method for load equalization of high power wound rotor induction motors ... more The paper presents a new method for load equalization of high power wound rotor induction motors driving the drums of belt conveyors. During exploitation, the diameters of the drums become unequal, due to the abrasion of rubber layer or sticking of dirt, leading to unequal load distribution between motors. The proposed solution of this problem implies the application of the ldquorotor resistor converterrdquo with the existing starting resistors. The rotor resistor converter consists of the group of three rotor resistors and the unit for their short-circuiting. For that purpose, the stator current of all motors is measured, and the instantaneous average value is used for the reference. This leads to the regime where one motor operates with the short-circuited rotor, with the semiconductor switch in the rotor resistor converter - always on. The currents of the remaining motors will be controlled by the PLC and the rotor resistor converters operating in the PWM regime, periodically short-circuiting the rotor terminals, i.e. the rotor resistors. In this way, the speed of the controlled motors will be reduced, to achieve equal load on all drives (load equalization). The results recorded on the laboratory model of the drive will be presented in the paper.

The proposed control structure is developed and tested on the detailed mathematical model of the drive system with the rubber belt. The presented algorithm is implemented on the new variable speed belt conveyor system with remote control on an open pit mine. Results of measurements on the system are used to compare the proposed algorithm with another approach to optimum speed determination based on the method of sequential quadratic programming. It is proved that both solutions provide minimum of electrical energy consumption of the drive under given constraints.

Reliable operation, high speed of the web during cutting, and high accuracy of the sheet dimensions are common requirements. Mechanical assemblies of many existing machines are in good condition, offering possible extension of the service life, provided that drives and control system are modernized. The paper presents the characteristics and requirements of basic subsystems of the paper-board cross cutter from the control system perspective. Drag-link mechanism which provides the variation of the instantaneous speed of the cutter blades, necessary for proper operation of the cutter is described and analyzed. Experimental results obtained on a real, commercial paper-board cross cutter are presented in the paper. The results show that high accuracy of the sheet length can be achieved.

Different methods for coordinated motion of the paper or board machine sections were used, mainly... more Different methods for coordinated motion of the paper or board machine sections were used, mainly depending on the production date. Present solutions are based on individual sectional AC or DC drives as parts of the network control system. The drives are integrated in the control and supervision system with the application of a high performance communication protocol, usually PROFIBUS, Ethernet or DeviceNet. Quality of control system of any paper machine is ensured and the software development procedure is kept straightforward with the use of the universal control block presented in this paper. The generalized structure of the proposed control block is suitable for application on different sections found in paper or board machines, with adequate parametrization. The performance of the block is tested on the dry-end of machine, where the definite amount of sheet tension is required by the technological process. The tension force saliently couples the adjacent drives, which can compromise the performance of the drives, and even lead to unstable operation. The proposed control system structure achieves stable operation of drives coupled through the material, with the possibility to control the sheet tension force.

The main demand for new construction of belt conveyors was the increase of reliability, unit capacity, minimization of personal, reduction of maintenance cost, increase of safety, reduction of consumed energy, etc. The paper presents detailed mathematical model of the belt conveyor suitable for analyses of both static and transient operating regimes. The model includes electrical drive system of the conveyor, and the mechanical part, with the special attention given to the elastic nature of the belt. Simulation results of the developed model for the drive with frequency converter are presented. Experimental results from the field measurements confirm the validity of the model.

Realization of Rewinder With a Reduced Number of Sensors

When adequately maintained, the mechanical system of rewinders and similar machines in paper indu... more When adequately maintained, the mechanical system of rewinders and similar machines in paper industry may have a significantly longer service life than its electrical and control systems. Over the lifetime of the facility, a rewinder may experience several major maintenance cycles, and these generally include significant upgrades to the electrical drive and control system. These upgrades present an opportunity to modify the design of the control system to eliminate some of the sensors or to provide signal redundancy by using state estimation. During such major reconstruction of a paper-board rewinder, it was noticed that the shipping-roll radius and the web tension force can be accurately estimated from the measurements available within the drive's control system. This paper presents the implementation of the two estimators on a commercial production rewinder. Test results from the equipment in service show that the measured signals can be supplemented with the estimated ones to provide an alternative in the event of sensor malfunction or to enable trending of accuracy of calibration. Both applications have an entitlement to reduce the downtime of the rewinder, as the replacement of the faulted sensor can be scheduled for the next planned idle period of the machine.

The adaptation mechanism is based on the gain scheduling. A deep knowledge of the phenomena in the drive was necessary to define the scheduled variables that capture the essential nonlinearities of the process considered. However, in practice, to realize the proposed adaptive control system, the only a priori knowledge required is the experimentally determined magnetization curve. Simulation and experimental results indicating high performances of the control system proposed, are presented.
