10 Must-Haves on My Winter Survival List

I love, love, love hot weather.  When I used to work in an office environment, when my fellow office mates thought the temperature was just right, I was cold.  If it felt just right to me in the office, everyone else was roasting.   Cold weather is not my friend.

Over the years I've found ways to deal with Old Man Winter.  Today I thought I'd share a few things that are high on the "Susan's Winter Survival Gear" list.    Be sure to share what's on your cold weather survival list...I would love to hear what gets you through these cold, dreary days of winter.

Flannel Sheets:
I love me some flannel sheets.  In fact, I have to fight myself to keep from putting them on the bed too early in the fall season.  It's so nice to crawl into bed and have it feeling snugly warm when you get in.  Remember the days of electric blankets?  Wonder if they still make those?

Vaseline:
I put this on my lips every night before I turn in.  It's also a handy size for your purse.  You wake up with soft, conditioned lips, ready for another winter's day.

Thick woolly socks:
If my feet are warm, I'm warm.  I LIVE in the thickest, "woolliest" cotton socks I can find, all winter long.  I found some at Kohl's one year and they have lasted through a gazillion winters.  Land's End and LL Bean sell them made with merino wool and they are supposed to be soft and not scratchy.  I can't wear wool sweaters...they make me itch even through thick turtle necks.  Has anyone tried the wool socks made with merino wool?  Wonder if they are less itchy?  I'm sure they are nice and warm.

Silks:
I used to wear these all the time when I worked as a Social Worker and spent my days out in the field on appointments. You never knew when you might find yourself spending the day in a home without heat or standing outside a home with police and paramedics.   I still love them for times when I'm going to be out doors a good bit.  They don't add bulk under your clothing like regular ole long underwear.  They cost a little more than normal long underwear, but they are super warm and comfy.  I noticed the tops are on sale right now at Land's End.  Don't know why the bottoms aren't.  Strange.  Watch for these to go on sale in some of the online stores, then snag you a pair.  They also come in round neck and turtle neck styles.

Books:
I can survive any winter, no matter how cold, if I just have a few good books by my side.  Cicero said it best:  “A room without books is like a body without a soul.” ― Marcus Tullius Cicero

Hot Chocolate:
Gotta have a mug of hot chocolate when I curl up in front of the fire with a good book.   (Tablescape can be viewed HERE.)

Static Guard:
Love this stuff, but not for what you think.  I was whining to someone a while back about all the static I have in my long hair come wintertime.   I always use a really good conditioner, but it doesn't seem to help stop the static issue.  My friend suggested Static Guard.  Before I sprayed the Static Guard on my brush, I checked the side of the can and sure enough, you can use it on your brush for static issues with your hair.  And it works!  It lasts quite a while too...basically all day.  So no more hair sticking to my face and driving me totally bonkers all winter.

Udderly Smooth:
My sister was the one who first told me about this lotion.  Can you guess what it was originally created for.  Those spots on the container aren't just there for decoration. lol  I've been using the one on the far left, but I may try the stuff on the far right with Urea next time.  It says it's for really dry skin...and yes, Urea is what it sounds like. lol   But what the heck.  The regular stuff is so great, I'm willing to try the intensive stuff, too.   I love that it absorbs immediately into your skin and doesn't leave it feeling greasy.  Good stuff.

Small Heater:
One of these lives in my office all winter, usually up under my desk.  Love the warmth.

Water:
Since I'm so cold natured and almost always have a small heater running in my office, I try to drink lots of water during the winter.  Very important to stay hydrated.  I usually keep some in the car, too.

What's on your winter survival list? Can't wait to hear!

Yes, they still make electric blankets because I just bought one last winter and it's on my winter survival list and it's flannel. I just use it to warm the bed before I jump in and I am transported to Heaven... bring on the cold!!

I'm cold in the winter time too. For our RV trip to Alaska in 2010 my Hubby read about electric mattress pads recommended by other RVers so we decided to get one. It was wonderful and kept us nice and cosy throughout our trip. We liked it so well we bought another one for each of our beds at home. I wouldn't make it through the winter without the heated mattress pad as my feet are very cold all the time. The neat thing about the heated mattress pad is the separate control for each side. You can order it though Lands End. Lands End also has an electric throw and I have two of those and use them in the evenings. Great posting - you always think of such interesting things to post about.

I need to go dig out that can of static guard! I've been threatening to cut my hair for this very reason but I'll give this a try first! (I bought an anti-static brush - worthless)

Tina, it really works. Don't spray too much on your brush at once because a little will do the job. You can add more and brush through your hair again if need be. I was soooo happy when I found this fix for static hair...it does drive you crazy, I know.

Love your list. They do make electric blankets

Still and some are very soft not linked before when you could feel the wires !

Sandy, Thanks! I've never heard of those...leave it to good old Land's End. Sounds like heaven! I love the electric throw idea, too...cozy!

Lauren, I remember those wires! Guess everything gets better and improved...glad to know you don't feel those now. lol

I must have my down coat; two pair of gloves in my car (black and brown); eggnog ( like it in my coffee); scented candles; chick films; gingerbread cake; bleacher seats in the car for the zillion basketball games we attend; whatever my book club is reading; my acrylic blanket on the couch; Rhodes cinnamon rolls in the freezer to defrost overnight and bake up on cold mornings!

This is a great post! Since I went through menopause, I am HOT all the time!!! Now my HUBBY is cold all the time;):) But I put flannel sheets on our bed for him, I, too drink hot chocolate on snowy mornings (none yet this year)!!! I also bought a pair of GREAT slippers that are like boots at Kohl's. They keep my feet toasty when it gets cold in here. I wear boots all winter only bgecause they are more comfortabl;e than any of my shoes!!! They are stretchy and fit like a SOFT glove:):) Also LOOOOOVE the heated seats in our cars for COLD nights when we go out. XO, Pinky

Nettie, what a great list! I'll have to look for the Rhodes cinnamon rolls. Oh, love scented candles...should have had that on my list...but I love them in the summer, too. :)

Pinky, I just bought some Aerosole boots this winter...the kind that are for indoors. They do keep your feet warm! Oh, I forgot about the heated car seats...the best! How did we get by before they came out with those? They get warm before the heat in the car starts blowing. Awesome list!

I know just how you feel. I did not use to be cold natured. This just started with me a couple of years ago - don't know if age or meds changed that. What I do know is my elec. bill reflects it in the Winter. :(
Thanks for sharing the tips.

Yep, me too. Definitely seems to get worse as you get older, at least it has for me. Glenda, get some silks to wear inside...they help tremendously!

We don't get winter/seasons here, so I wouldn't know where to start. When it's cold around here, I open all the windows and bask in it because most likely it'll only last a day... if that. Lol! It's been 80 degrees here lately, and before we know it it'll be back to 115 heat index with added humidity to prolong the misery. Sometimes we actually leave a potholder or little dish towel in the car because the steering wheel burns our hands. Lol!

But if we did experience Old Man Winter, I would imagine a warm (and comfortable) jacket, wool socks, and a hot cup of cappuccino would be at the top of my list.

Oh! Also a warm kitty in my lap while I drink that cup of Java.

Kristin

Hey Susan, we have always had a heated mattress pad on our bed. A sign of true love is pre-heating the bed before your sweetie gets in! Our boys had heated mattress pads on their beds in college. Both lived in drafty old college town houses in Pennsylvania. The houses were always freezing. All of our bed have flannel sheets that go on the beds in October/November when the weather starts to get cool. We stop using them when the weather warms up.
Our sons played lacrosse in college and it was not unusual to have a game right after they cleared the snow from the field. I travelled to games with a heated stadium cushion, Hot Hands and ToastieToes, Ugg boots and gloves, one of those ski masks, and an Elmer Fudd hat along with Ski pants and Ski jacket.

I love (1)flannel sheets. I make a duvet cover for my down comforter (a must have for summer and winter. It is changed out as often as the sheets. (2)A throw everywhere, in the car, on the back of my chair, in my "must haves" for shows/sales. (3)Tea bags - you can hot water almost anywhere. (4)Boots for my feet, in the house. These are a few of my favorite things.

We actually got an electric mattress pad for Christmas this year and it's AHHHHH-MAZING! I thinkit's even better than an electric blanket because you don't have the bulky itchiness of electric blankets but you get in bed and your sheets are warm. ours has a 2 sided control and a remote so we can warm it up before getting in. You should check it out!

Awesome list. Yes, lots of water. Although I added potassium to my daily intake so I can actually absorb the water without diluting needed nutrients. We grew up using bag balm, which we also used on our goats. I always think it's funny that udderly brand has gotten to be so mainstream since we were so embarrassed to use bag balm as kids. Not any more. LOL! I think I'm going to go make a cup of cocoa right now. I've been watching the snow come down all day and I'm in the mood for a warm beverage.

Love, love, love your blog! I would add flannel pj's (as someone already has). Just curious (nosy) but do you work now, or is your blog your job? I just find it amazing how much you seem to get done in a day, and how creative you are on top of all that! Thank you so much for showing us your beautiful home. I so enjoy looking around. Everything is so cozy and welcoming. Also, I love the movie home tours! I can spend hours looking at those! Thank you for all you do, and stay warm!

I have a quick question. (I hope that's okay). I've always wondered about this.... what do you guys do when there's a lot of snow on the ground and you have to dress up for work? I would think a nice pair of boots/galoshes would be a must, so how does that work when you have to wear nice work clothes? Do you carry an extra pair of nice shoes with you to change into once you arrive to the office? Lol! I mean, what do you do?

I know, sounds like a silly question but I really am curious and have no clue as I've never even been in snow before that covered the entire ground. When there's nothing but a few random snow flurries in these parts, the entire state pretty much shuts down. Lol!

Found these booties at Bed, Bath, and Beyond this fall that you heat in the microwave for 1 minute (says you can freeze for 2 hours as well). They are made by Herbal Concepts. Heat those booties up and stick them on your feet.......ahhhhh! I walk a lot for exercise and my feet sometimes get stiff at night. These booties keep my feet warm and loose.

FYI: About 3-4 times a week I use stridex pads to wipe all over my feet and toes, then I slather Bag Balm all over my feet and toes as well. The stridex has salicyicacid, therefore exfoliating all that dead skin!! This works wonders.

I clicked the link to Social Worker and my hat is off to you and others for doing this important work. I, too, have the pleasure to work from home after a forty year career in education and I love it!, too! My winter survival list includes merino wool socks. They are warm without being bulky and I don't think they are at all scratchy. Recently I purchased alpaca socks and they are even warmer. Cashmere lined leather gloves, shearling lined bedroom scuffs, homemade soup and green tea are items on my list.

Thanks, Louise! Yes, I gave my notice at work on August 17th and my last day was Sept. 14, 2010. I began blogging full-time after that. I feel very blessed to be doing something I love so much full-time now. I blogged in the evenings for two years prior to leaving my job. You can read about that in this post: http://bit.ly/yRzs9R.
Blogging was a wonderful outlet for the stress I experienced in my day job.

Kristin, fortunately, here in Atlanta, we don't get a lot of snow. Georgia doesn't know what to do with snow so it pretty much paralyzes the city and the suburbs. Schools are always closed and a lot of businesses close and the employees stay home. It's utter chaos when it snows here. They are trying to do better now because last winter (I think it was last winter) the whole Metro Atlanta was shut down for 4 days...the streets were all solid ice and snow. When I worked as a Social Worker, I was never out in the snow since it snows so infrequently here, and on the 2-3 days it might snow each winter, I could usually stay inside and do documentation. I often carried spare shoes with me in the car though, because of the situations we had to walk in sometimes to make home visits. You almost had to throw your shoes away after some visits (dog feces, trash, mud, fleas, you name it). When I worked as a Social Worker, I dressed pretty plainly because you never knew when you might have to go into the field for an emergency. Hope that helps explain a bit.
For normal jobs, most folks around here do have some boots for snow. You can buy them online at Land's End and places like that. If you work in a nice office environment, you would carry your nice heels/shoes in a bag to put on once you arrived at the office. I bought some inexpensive snow boots just to have on hand if I wanted to go out into the snow for fun. We get a lot of ice here during the snow/ice storms...and nothing works on ice...it's just too dangerous to walk on.

My favorite socks are Rohner of Switzerland Trekking socks. They have them different times of the year at Sierra Trading Post. They do have wool, but it is soft, it doesn't bother me at all. I also love the SmartWool socks for the same "comfort" reasons. I bought a small electric throw that I use to just heat the foot of the bed instead of the whole bed and I LOVE it! Gloves in a Bottle from Lee Valley Catalog is the best winter hand protection I have ever found. Does just what the name says. It's pricey when you add in the shipping, but totally worth the price. I guess it's so good b/c the Canadians know winter way better than we do! Dianne

I'm just the opposite of you...I hate the heat and admire you southern ladies who live in it with such grace! I love winter, but so far here in upstate NY we haven't had as much snow and cold as usual.:-( But when it is cold, I like to have my creature comforts. My #1 favorite thing is my fireplace!!! We burn it for hours! I, too, love flannel sheets and a hot beverage. Good books are a must in the winter in front of the fire. Winter does have its good points ;-)

Stay warm!!!

I fought with the hubby for years over an electric blanket. He wanted one and I did not. I had an issue with electricity running over me all night. I caved last year and bought HIM one with dual controls. I warm up my side before getting in and the sheets are warm and toasty. he can leave his side on all night if he desires. So the answer to your question...YES, they do still make electric blankets, haha.

I, too, discovered silk long johns after moving from native GA to Colorado. I bought my husband a few sets several years ago and in spite of much initial aversion, he loves his as well.

Other things I can't do without in the winter: Smart Wool socks, cashmere wraps that double as scarves during the commute and shawls in the office, a humidifier for dry Colorado nights, La Canadienne boots, and my super-thick terry spa robe.

Just so you know.....I love reading your blog!! I see where you were a social worker. I am a school nurse and I feel as though I have been transformed from a nurse to a school social worker!! I love it though. I work in a school that has a very high poverty rate. We actually have a social worker full time at our school. She does a little "nursing stuff" and I do a little "social worker stuff." We do what we need to do to help the children! Did you work with children or adults or both when you worked outside the home? Before I became a school nurse, I worked as a Home Health Nurse. Awesome way to learn how people REALLY live.

Great list. My must haves this year were comfy socks, scarves, Vaseline for my hands (I've had a terrible time with super dry hands. No ideas what's going on so I'll blame it on the weather), Ugg style boots, coffee every morning, and lot and lots of water during the day. Tap water of course. :) I admit I miss the super cold snowy winters. I love wrapping myself in a cuddly warm blanket with a nice cup of hot chocolate and bundling up to go outside but it just doesn't get THAT cold in Az. :(

P.s. Check out my post on bottled water if you have time. I'd appreciate it and you might too. :)

I used to love my electric mattress pad -- but at this point I don't use one because of night sweats -- I alternately freeze and burn up -- maybe in a few years I'll enjoy it again though....it was the best for warming the sheets before bedtime.

I've always said that soup keeps me sane during the winter months. I usually make a pot of somekind every weekend during the cold months.

I've used the vaseline on my feet as well....it really works!

Now, if I could have one "dream" item of my choosing for winter....it would be a heated towel rack or even a little dryer in my bathroom to have warm towels when I get out of the tub or shower. And heated flooring would be nice as well.....as long as we're dreaming.

Used to have an electric blanket years ago, never like waking up to "hot spots" in the blanket, then about 15 years ago had a brand new one catch fire when family member was using it. My very favorite is a hot water bottle, I have 2, I run hot water thru them to preheat then fill with hottest tap water. Of course, hot cocoa, tea, morning coffee, soup, long hot showers, bubble bath, lots of blankets, quilts, and micro fiber throws. The nice thing about summer when it gets too hot I can go out and play in the sprinkler while I water the garden. No rain here in this part of California for 2 months now and I keep forgetting to water plants and trees in the freezing weather, somewhere in the 20's again tonight.

I am your opposite. I can't stand flannel sheets, i like nice percale. Dont like gloves or hats, wear boots if the know is deep. The heat gets turned down to 61 at night, and no higher than 67 during the day. I guess i got used to freezing all those years in the classroom. Sometimes we would wear coats all day!

If someone's house doesn't have a/ c...see you in September! :). Seriously!

What a great post! We just moved back to the midwest from Texas so I'm still adapting to the cold. My list:
-a down blanket on my bed
-a cozy throw on my favorite chair
-my Keurig--a hot drink always ready
-scented candles
-down gloves (a new find this year at Eddie Bauer--LOVE them!)
-warm slippers
-Cuddle Duds (thin long underwear tops similar to your skins)

While I do not like to promote products, I use Wen for my babyfine and it took the static problem away with no problem. It really hydrates your hair well. And as for hands and cuticle you have to try Argon Oil. This is the first year I do not have dry cuticles. I use it on my face, lip, hands and feet. There are a lot of brands of this so you shoud be able to find it easily.

This was a great post, Susan. I've learned so much from you and the others. I'm like you, I just endure the winter. February always seems the hardest. I don't know what I'd do if I lived in a really cold place. My survival tools include Blistex for my lips, and Gold Bond Shea Butter lotion for my body. And my laptop serves as my own personal warmer while I'm blogging. Going to try Vaseline for my feet tonight.

I make this fabric bag and fill it with feed corn. Then at night I heat it in the microwave and put it in the bed to warm the sheets for my feet. Then I snuggle to it. I love it! My husband hates flannel sheets so this is my compromise. It's also good for sore necks etc. Of course a cat in the bed is good too...lol. On the Merino wool socks, I bought some from Lands End for hiking and they do not itch and are very soft and comfy. The only other thing I see missing on your list that for me is essential is a space humidifier. I have the Vortex brand and they are quiet and very dependable. This keeps my nose and lips moist and the static away. Plus I don't shock the cats when I pet them. But most of all a lower house temperature is more comfortable. I have one in our bedroom and one in the kitchen. Love them!! Thanks for the tip on the silks...will get some.

Susan, great, great post. Who would have thought that this Florida girl would have to re-arrange the closet for the seasons, have a drawer full of socks and a drawer full of "cuddle duds"..It has been a bit of an adjustment relocating to N.C., but worth all the cold chills being close to our precious granddaughter. She "warms" my heart better than any coat!

I commend your work as a Social Worker. I was in the Home Health Care field for 25 years and our Social Worker was our gift from heaven. A truly admirable profession. My niece just received her LCSW and is doing wonderful work with children. Social Workers are the unsung heroes in so many situations..I am glad that you are able to pursue your other passions in life. Have a warm and wonderful day!

I love this post. It is cold here today in IL. Turtlenecks are a must. I also wear sweat pants when I don't have to go out. There are throws all over my house too. Our 3 cats also can be found snuggled up on one too. Great slippers, seat heater in car, good lotion are a must. I don't use an electric blanket because of a burn spot on one years ago. I bought us down blankets and flannel sheets. Once you are in bed, the warmth is good.

I am finding it harder and harder to deal with cold winter days, such as today here in PA. I'm only 35 but the cold gets in my bones and it takes forever for me to warm back up. I totally agree with the body lotion. My skin gets so dry in the winter because of the heat in the house and the dry air outside. I also think nothing is better than a hot cup of cocoa on a cold winter's day! Keep warm.

I am one of those people who look forward to cool days. I suffer thru the summer months. I wear a fleece jacket all winter unless I am going to be outside for any length of time. I wear gloves just long enough to warmthe car, then take them off. Sleep with light blanket all year long. I am 74 and keep waiting until I will love heat. One thing about being a cold weather person compared to a warm weather person - when cold you can always layer, when hot can only take off so much clothes.

Susan a bounce dryer sheet (or any dryer sheet) works for your hair too. I keep one in my coat pocket and just swipe it over my hair when it needs it. One will last all winter! I've gotten way cold too as the years go by - I used to be one of the people in the office saying "Who cranked the heat up?" and now I have my space heater by my desk!!!

Good friends of ours use an electric blanket and love it! They have a timer on their heat system so the heat cuts off around 10 when they are going to bed and then cuts back on around 6 when they start to get up. They use the electric blanket to keep out the chill in the middle of the night.

Wool sweaters do make me itch, but the socks do not - not even a little. They are so much warmer, too! My additions to a winter must-have list would be - chai tea; fleece jacket or hoodie - but I do love a shawl, too; Ugg boots; and a remote starter for my car. Fun post!

Hi Susan,

First of all, WOW!! Reading your story of being a Social Worker blew me away! How did you deal with this personally? Every day with all these traumatic, horrifying and very sad experiences must have made a huge impact on you, for the rest of your life I imagine. I have huge respect and admiration for people like you!

I like your survival list and can very easily apply them all to my own list. Parts of Sweden are very cold during the winter months. I live "south" so we got milder temps but still cold. This year we haven´t had much snow - yet. But we dress in full gear anyway. Winter coats, hats, warm boots, socks, gloves and my favorite thing - a long soft knitted scarf to wrap around you. Indoors I like to walk barefoot most of the time - ´cause I´m a "hottie" ;) but, if I´m watching TV I love to stick my feet into a nice pair of down socks!

I have friends who use flannel sheets and says that is sooo nice! That´s next on my shopping list. I hate being cold when it´s time for sleep.

Take care and have a nice day!
Sanna

Been in the south for 22 years and I love the winters because I can't stand the heat, the humidity, and the mosquitoes!

I like the bright blue skies of winter, the long cozy nights, hot soup and warm bread.

Having said all that, I have felt the chill more this year...I rely on my down parka, space heaters, warm baths and coffee. I could not make it through the winter without looking at beautiful homes on blogs and in magazines, good books, good TV shows, and Scrabble.

My real way to fix all this? We are moving to San Diego at the end of 2012 :)

Love your list. I use flannel sheets, an extra blanket or quilt and must have the thick creams during the winter. Hot tea (cinnamon apple spice) is my favorite evening treat and I do love eggnog in my coffee during the winter.
When I lived in Romania I wore fleece longjohns every day. I think they were for skiing, but they were amazing. I have to have sleepers in my house and boots outside...
and lastly a scarf...if my neck is warm, then usually the rest of me is!

I had to chuckle at some of these. My skin gets dry, so I use Carmex on my lips at night. I'm using the Dead Sea products I wrote about and they are helping with dry skin. I do usually wear socks during the day. However, while I love flannel sheets, heavy sockss and the purple silkys are very pretty...I would melt! I can get a heat wave and have to open the patio door even in winter!! I should drink more water. My solution is to have a soft throw within reach at all times when I'm home. I can quickly cover up or take it off! I'm with you on the books and hot chocolate!

I just do not like the cold either, Susan! I know it's been warmer that usual here in Atlanta this season, but it's still too cold for me. I can hardly wait for summer. Meantime, my favorite winter comfort items are:
herb teas in great variety
my ceramic teapot (to make the tea)
down comforter on the bed
Warm flannel pj pants
soft cotton tank tops from old navy, I wear them 24/7
boot-style slippers with fuzzy lining
four different comforter choices on the sofa

Will have to try the vaseline trick on my poor, dry lips

I really lived in two different worlds. Thanks for your sweet words...so appreciate those! I will definitely never forget what I saw during those years. Sometimes I wish I could.
I bet living in Sweden, you know just how to keep warm. You go barefoot? My feet are cold about half the time with socks on! lol
BTW, I just noticed tonight that Land's End has their flannel sheets on sale...well, some of the colors are on sale. I'm eyeing a set of red ones for my bed. The ones I have on there now are pretty old and I don't think they are as good a quality as the ones from Land's End. I think I'll buy some for the guest room, too. Oh, check LL Bean, too. They are getting great reviews on that site.
