Beading Table Wednesday: 05/30/13

Megan's Table

Beadle Point!  We just got these great new beadable iPhone cases in, and I've been working on stitching one up.  It's certainly cute, but it sure does take time!  How do you feel about using 15/0 seed beads in projects?  Zen or tedium?  I have to admit, it's totally zen to me!

Julie's Table

Bangle bracelets are all the rage right now and we have been having fun coming up with a lot of different styles. Megan created the bangle with the bead woven core and I made all the other ones pictured here. For all of these designs we used Nunn Design bangle bracelets and then decorated them with items such as rhinestone cup chain, Miyuki 11/0 delica beads, and Vintaj Patina paint.

Beading Table Wednesday: 05/22/2013

Megan's Table

As a life-long crafty type person, I get a thrill when I learn an entirely new way to create something and it just "clicks".  It's especially gratifying when I didn't expect the technique to come so easily.  I had been avoiding jumping into the soutache bead embroidery pool, thinking that it looked awfully tricky, but I've finally started playing with it, and I'm hooked!  It's a little bit more like traditional embroidery than it is like beading, but I've done a lot of traditional embroidery, so that might be why it's so appealing to me!  Julie's taped an entire series of instructional videos, so be on the look out for them soon.

Julie's Table

On my table today is the prep work for a video that I will be taping soon.  I have recorded a number of instructional videos covering how to use resin in jewelry and two fairly common questions are "what if the object is not a bezel?" and "what if the backside is not flat?" I am hoping this new video will answer those two questions as I teach how to cover a stamping blank in resin and how to fill a Nunn Design button with resin.

Contest Update: In Honor Of...

Summer Punch Necklace and Megan Cuff
Have you checked out our current beading contest: In Honor Of...?  We want to see your best creations inspired by a loved one, and we want all of our other readers to see them too!

Here are a couple of examples of pieces that we've done here at Beadaholique that were inspired by someone we know.  On the left is my Summer Punch Necklace.  When I was designing this piece, I was inspired by my friend Nikki, who loves to wear bright colors and is crazy about anything with a chevron pattern on it.  On the right is Julie's Megan Cuff...inspired by me (aw shucks, *blush*).  Julie said the big bold lucite flowers and bright pink color made her think of me when she was putting this project together.

What pieces have you made that were inspired by a friend or family member?

Our selected finalists will have their entries published here on our Beader's Blog and on the Beadaholique Facebook page for public voting, and two winners will each receive a $100 Beadaholique gift certificate!

Shrink plastic!  I remember the first time I saw jewelry made out of shrink plastic.  It just about blew my mind.  We just got some new shrink plastic in house (coming soon to the website!) and I've been having a blast playing around with it and seeing what I can come up with.  Here's my favorite application so far: shiny hot pink heart dangles!  What is your favorite thing to do with shrink plastic?

Soutache! If you have been looking at the different beading magazines currently for sale, you will have no doubt seen soutache. This fun technique of stitching cords together, wrapping them around beads, and creating fantastic swirls is quite addictive. I took this photo not on my beading table but on our video table. I am currently making a 5 part video series on the basics of soutache.

I've been working on this color blocked loom piece this week.  I'm using the new Ricks Beading Loom, which results in a finished piece with only TWO warp threads.  If you've done loom weaving before, you'll understand why that's so exciting.  I'm going to finish this bracelet with our new Miyuki slide ends, and I can't wait to see the finished product!

Book Review and Giveaway: Bewitching Bead & Wire Jewelry

The lovely folks over at Lark Crafts were kind enough to send us a copy of their new book: Bewitching Bead & Wire Jewelry.  We love the variety of techniques used in the 40 projects in this book.  And the clear photographs and instruction make every one of them accessible to jewelry makers of any level.  The projects range from simple beaded drops up to more intermediate wire work, such as hand-linked chains and some very pretty wire-wrapping.

We thought we'd share, and give this book away to one lucky reader.  To enter, simply leave a comment on this post.  Giveaway ends next Monday, May 13th at 4pm PT.  At that time, we will choose one random winner from those who left comments on this blog post.  Please do not comment anonymously and do not use your Yahoo Pulse Profile or your Twitter account when commenting, we cannot contact you if you do.  If you comment using your Facebook account, please make sure that your privacy settings allow us to contact you - and check your "other" folder after the giveaway ends.  Please adhere to all Beadaholique rules and conditions for this giveaway.

Beading Contest: In Honor Of...

In Honor of My Mom by Julie Bean
From Beadaholique designer Julie Bean: “With Mother’s Day around the corner, instead of picking a theme such as “May Flowers” or “Pretty Pearls,” we decided to create a contest with a more personal touch. For this beading challenge, we want you to create a piece of jewelry inspired by a loved one. Add little touches about the person into the design or create a piece of jewelry that captures their personality and unique style.
The photo above shows a piece I designed in honor of my mom for the very touching “Memories & Thanks Blog Hop” that renowned jewelry artist Lori Anderson did. I tried to think of all the things that my mom likes and then translated those items into design elements. The sewing machine has two meanings: one is that she likes to sew, and the other is that she makes dollhouse miniatures. The little steampunk gears are because she loves all things Victorian. She also collects antique lace so I added touches of old lace as well as a lace pendant. Behind the lace are images of French postcards which reminded me of a trip to Paris we took together. Finally, the little painted birds are because of the bird feeders she always kept in our yard when I was growing up.”
Now it’s your turn! We want to see your projects created in honor of someone special.

Rules/How to Enter:
Email us a clear, in focus, well-lit photo of a beading project of your own design which fits our theme and uses one or more products which can be found at Beadaholique. Email one photo, at least 500 px in width or height but no bigger than 1600 px wide and 1600 px tall, to [email protected] (do not use this for questions; contact us here) with the following included in your email:

Subject line: In Honor of _______

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Pre-Season Autumn/Winter 2014/15 Launch

We at Beadaholique are very excited to be one of the first to share with you SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS latest launch! This is a pre-season launch for the Autumn/Winter 2014/15 season and it features two luscious new color blends and long awaited BeCharmed birthstone colors.
This launch is all about the seasons, how they blend into one another and transform the world around us. Even the new birthstone colors remind us of the passing of time and how important it is to mark these special moments in our lives. With the articles included in this launch you can create heirloom jewelry of your own to celebrate the milestones and memories which make life so rich.
We see the physical transformation of spring into summer in the Provence Lavender-Chrysolite blend. Provence Lavender has such a soft hint of blue, and combining it with the delicate green of Chrysolite creates the perfect flow of color. There is a beautifully natural fade between the two colors, just like the change experienced in nature. I can envision this color blend paired with crisp whites and sterling silver accents. For a romantic nostalgic feel, try pairing the Provence Lavender-Chrysolite blend with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS crystal faux pearls.

Contrasting the soft springtime feel of the Provence Lavender-Chrysolite blend is the icy winter-inspired Crystal-Montana blend. The simplistic brilliance of Crystal coupled with Montana’s bold and stunning blue is enchanting. The mixture is elegantly sophisticated yet powerful and edgy. Adding Crystal-Montana briolettes to a necklace using CrystalCrystal Silver Night, or Black Diamond would create a breathtaking piece.  Pairing this blend with sterling silver would be festively fashionable for the winter season!

With this launch we will finally have all birthstone colors available in large-hole BeCharmed beads! SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS has added more colors to fill out the BeCharmed line, specifically with an eye to giving you sparkling choices for every birthstone. Julie made the fabulous April Birthstone Bracelet and April Birthstone Earrings with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Crystal BeCharmed Pave Beads to represent the Diamond birthstone of April. She also created a March birthstone bracelet and a pair of Aquamarine (March) birthstone earrings. These projects can be used as a template for birthstone projects for every month! If you’re unsure of what your birthstone may be, we have a guide on our website for reference.
Over the last several SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS launches we have seen a definite nod to nature and to the honoring of the beauty which surrounds us everyday. This current launch furthers this trend and gives us more options to create treasured pieces of jewelry that feature the unsurpassed quality and precision of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. I know I can't wait to start playing with these beautiful beads and pendants, how about you?

Beading Table Wednesday: 05/01/2013

Megan's Table

If you're thinking that my table looks like a mess this week, then you're absolutely right!  I tend to create projects in groups, making a whole bunch of pieces, and then writing them all up.  Right now, I'm in the "writing them all up" phase of the process, which means all of the left over bits are still scattered all over my table.  Next up: clean up time!

Julie's Table

It has been awhile since I have just "played" with Vintaj pieces (even though they are one of my favorites!). The 3 main filigree pieces used in this design had been sitting on my desk for nearly a month; I knew I wanted to do something with them but I was not sure what. It took combining rhinestone cup chain with the filigree for me to have that "AH HA!" moment. This piece was so much fun to make and I am really pleased how the draped chains ended up looking.
