The goal was to make it freely available online using ePortfolio. Through the efforts of five faculty members, we searched for and edited nearly 100 primary sources and posted them on an ePortfolio platform that is available to our students and, more broadly, to the general public. We are currently in the early stages of doing the same thing for our American History survey course. These web-based open source readers improve student learning by lowering barriers to accessing the documents and by making them easily portable for students. Perhaps more importantly, the website has become a living document that is constantly being updated and improved to best fit the evolving requirements of the course or specific faculty. And because it is open source, faculty have become inspired to develop engaging metacognitive learning strategies aimed at increasing student participation, whether face to face or online.
