Furniture made in the 1780s for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette"s château de Saint-Cloud has been brought through the years of the Revolution, the homes of nineteenth century French collectors and those of twentieth century American collectors, to the museum"s current display. Issues of politics, patrimony and contemporary design vary in the furniture"s reception as it changed hands and crossed oceans. Today, furniture from Saint-Cloud is represented at the Met as remnants of culture embodied in material form. The period room installation has developed over the past century towards the goal of offering viewers a snapshot of society and life of the past, one that captures their attention and stimulates their imagination by setting the stage on which the drama of history may unfold. i
