Excavations at the Late Bronze Age-Middle Iron Age bivallate enclosed site at Meillionydd, Rhiw, ... more Excavations at the Late Bronze Age-Middle Iron Age bivallate enclosed site at Meillionydd, Rhiw, Northwest Wales revealed a stone roundhouse that was built into the outer bank and faced the adjacent entrance passage of the site. The floor of this roundhouse was analysed for total phosphorus (P) using a Total X-ray Fluorescence spectrometer. P, being a good indicator of organic matter, was used to identify the potential use of the house in the absence of any significant amount of artefacts. The analysis revealed a central-peripheral division of space within the house suggesting that certain areas were designated for specific functions. This paper also checks, with this roundhouse, the compatibility of models of space use within roundhouses suggested previously in British prehistoric studies.
