The tripartite model posits that attitudes consist of three interrelated components: cognitive, affective, and behavioural. The study aimed to examine the extent to which this theoretical framework explains the attitudes of linguistics students towards learning foreign languages. A sample of 165 undergraduate students from the Department of Linguistics at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka participated in the cross-sectional study. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire adapted from previous language attitude research, including items from established instruments such as the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The questionnaire gathered demographic information and assessed the students' cognitive, affective, and behavioural attitudes towards learning the foreign language course- Chinese, French, and German languages, together with the correlation between these three attitudes that make up the model. The findings revealed that the students held overall positive affective and behavioural attitudes towards foreign language learning, despite exhibiting mixed cognitive views. Students identified teaching methods and peer learning as important factors shaping their attitudes. The results provided support for the tripartite conceptualization of attitudes in the foreign language learning context. The study highlighted the need to address the cognitive, affective, and
behavioural aspects of attitudes in order to foster more positive dispositions towards learning new languages among linguistics students. Recommendations are provided for enhanced scaffolding, pragmatic immersion, and targeting initial obstacles and lower proficiency areas to strengthen students' learning experiences and outcomes through evidence-based program refinement.

The two languages under study have their phonological peculiarities, hence, any Igbo learner of Chinese is bound to encounter difficulties and vice versa. In other words due to the phonological differences between Igbo, the mother tongue (MT) and Chinese, the Target Language (TL), the different sound system may create a problem in learning the target language. The data for this paper were collected through both primary and secondary sources. The paper was able to bring out the similarities and differences using the contrastive analysis as a framework. Through a descriptive approach, the two languages are presented, Isolated and described. Through classroom interaction, the pedagogic implications are predicted based on the differences that exist in the sound systems of the two languages. The findings reveal amongst other things that the absence of some of the phonemes in Igbo which are present in Chinese pose learning difficulties for Igbo learners of Chinese. Also, Igbo has the greater number of consonantal phonemes than Chinese, hence Igbo learners will have difficulty in learning Chinese. Certain sounds in Igbo which are absent in Chinese will pose learning problems to the Chinese learners of Igbo. Chinese has aspirated sounds such as /Ph th Kh tSh etc/ which are absent in Igbo, will pose learning problems to the Igbo learners of Chinese. Absence of retroflex sounds in Igbo may lead to error in production. The study concludes by suggestions that language teachers should focus more on those areas of differences in the two languages in the course of teaching, in other to enhance the learning of the target languages ((TL).

Its objectives are to identify what constitute the clothing in Igbo and Chinese as well as identifying the similarities and differences between Igbo and Chinese clothing. The Chinese data used for analysis were elicited from the Chinese teachers at Confucius Institute, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) whereas those of Igbo came from introspection since the researchers are native speakers of Igbo and also through the instrumentation of questionnaire as one of the methods of data collection. The framework adopted in the paper is Linguistic relativity also known as Sapir-Whorf hypothesis or Whorfianism which holds that the structure of a language affects its speaker's worldview or recognition. The scope of study is limited to clothes in Igbo and Chinese languages. The paper adopts the descriptive survey research design. The research finds out some cultural differences in clothing terms between the Igbo and Chinese language.. Our findings include some clothing which are are prominent in the Chinese culture but are not in the traditional Igbo culture. They include: 牛仔裤 (jeans), 卫衣 (hoodie), 吊带背心 (camisole), 比基尼(bikini) etc while some clothes which are in the Igbo but not in the Chinese culture include: ogodo (wrapper), coral beads, loincloths etc.

The study will make use of Language Awareness (LA) theory by Hawkins (1984), in order to explore the importance of sociolinguistic competence in language learning. The notion is that possession of a huge quantity of vocabulary and knowledge of grammatical rules do not necessarily lead to the proficiency in a language, learners should be aware of the correct meaning of words in transferring intended meaning and use well-formed sentences along with society norms in order to avoid any misunderstanding, communication breakdown, or wrong judgements. The data contain a list of 60 animal names, presented in Chinese, Igbo, and Yoruba with their English gloss. The objective is to examine some of the communicative features of the animal names, investigate how the animal names are conceptualized for better understanding of Foreign Language learning, and also determine the level of similarities and differences between the language groups and cultures in using animal names in terms of meaning. The results of the finding show that animal names can be helpful in vocabulary building; for derivation of noun, verbs and adjectives. They provide insights into how language determines the cognitive and socio-cultural dimensions of a specific linguistic community. The study proves that animal names can be regarded as one possible means to learn the cultures of different people, the results prove that the semantic connotations of animal imagery used to describe human beings and their characteristics is of wide if not universal use. Furthermore, the results show that some of the animal names in these languages have attained the status of national icon. This paper seeks to address the gap in the conceptualisation of animal names in the teaching/learning of Chinese as Foreign Language by the advanced Igbo and Yoruba speaking learners.

However, there are several extra linguistic forms of communication that have been made possible also by sound and acoustic effects as in language production. Based on the foregoing, the paper investigates non verbal forms of communication among the Igbo people of the south eastern Nigeria. The production of sounds and acoustic effects from various traditional instruments are studied. Also, also various parts of the body other than the normal vocal sounds are investigated. Furthermore, the paper studied the use of these sounds in communication, especially in cultural communication among the Igbo people. We adopt the descriptive survey method and use the theoretical framework of oramedia an aspect ethno-cultural communication in exploring the dynamics of extra-linguistic sounds in Igbo cultural communication. The paper discovers that sound patterns and acoustic effects (extra linguistic) other than the sounds from the vocal tract system of man play a significant role in human communication, especially in cultural communication.

This study adopts Berry's acculturation framework (1980, 1997, and 2005) to address the academic gap. The study researches the challenges perceived by both the Chinese teachers and Igbo learners of Chinese in both their teaching/learning environments, their coping strategies and their respective pattern of adaptation to cultural integration and assimilation. Findings indicated that the Chinese teachers tended to develop close contact with the host community while maintaining their original culture, adopting integration and assimilation in their acculturation modes. Also highlighted is the teacher-student bonding between the Chinese teachers and the students through personal values, cultural adjustments/shifts, socialization, building networks, etc. The pedagogical implication of the findings suggested that crosscultural communication has been enhanced between Nigeria and China through the teaching and learning of Chinese at CI in Unizik.

It is the means through which people express their social group and culture. In fact, language is the property of one's speech community which sets the standards of behaviour and the appropriateness of language use for different contexts and situations. An Igbo adage says that "Okwu abụghị ịtọ kobo". That is, speech is not sold at three for one kobo. Further still, it means that the act of speaking is not easy or cheap. That is why this paper looks into the ethnography of communication: the Igbo traditional marriage perspective. That is to say, it seeks to use the case of Igbo traditional marriage to investigate and analyse the speaking codes and norms specified for the Igbo people by their speech community as a means of judging situational appropriateness. This write up relies on Hymes (1962) proposal of an "Ethnography of Speaking" as it reflects in the case of Igbo traditional marriage to bring out the conformity or otherwise to the generally acceptable contexts of language use. The paper also seeks to establish to what degree the application of Hyme's paradigm is workable in the Igbo traditional marriage. At the end, the paper is able to establish not only that Hyme's proposal has some flaws in the area of events sequence or procedural order but also that the Igbo speaking norms with regard to traditional marriage is scarcely in danger, as it is preserved by each kindred's consistent effort to ensure that only relations versed in marriage matters represent or speak for them during such occasions.

The paper also examines the political system, judicial system, corruption in Nigeria, and human rights in Nigeria. The findings show that some of the aspects of abuse of use of language in politics in Nigeria includes; 'Democracy', 'dividend of democracy', 'Ghana must go', 'Roger', '419', 'Ghost- Workers, 'Second-term, Third- term ', 'Federal character', '10%','National- cake', 'Settle' 'Brown envelop' and 'Nigerian-factor'. The paper concludes that this abuse of language use in Nigerian democracy has reduced the nations resources to the level of cakes meant to be shared freely at birthdays or wedding ceremonies.

The objective of the study is geared toward ascertaining the type of naming practices among the Igbo and Chinese cultures, the semantic contents of some of Igbo and Chinese names, the similarities and differences in the Igbo and Chinese naming traditions, factors that determine names given to a child in Igbo and Chinese traditions, and the significance of naming in both languages. The study discovers that Igbo and Chinese PN are not mere arbitrary labels, but are meaningful and based on socio-cultural contexts. The study reveals that Igbo and Chinese PN systems and practices are a marker of the people's beliefs and ideology, religion, culture, philosophy, and thought. Igbo and Chinese PN are best understood and analyzed when one has insight into the ethno-pragmatics, socio-cultural norms and the language and culture of Igbo and Chinese. The study also reveals that the semantic contents of Igbo and Chinese PN depict various contexts: Theophoric PN, Ideational PN, Monumental PN, Testimonial PN, Relational PN, and Temporal PN. It is revealed that Igbo and Chinese share a lot of naming traditions in common, with some few differences. The differences are based on their different cultural backgrounds. The study concludes that the similarities should be better explored in order to enhance inter-cultural communication and deepen mutual understanding between the two cultures.

Linguistic rights, especially for the indigenous people that are mostly found in the rural areas,... more Linguistic rights, especially for the indigenous people that are mostly found in the rural areas, are relevant to their development. Every race and languages should have the freedom and right to develop in their communities using their native languages and not have extraneous languages imposed on them without their consent. Some people have been disenfranchised and isolated from development and also alienated from national development, participatory governance/politics because they are only knowledgeable in their indigenous languages. Hence, they do not have access to the so called official language and thereby isolated. We need to recognize their right to national discourse, education through their indigenous languages as bona fide citizens of the state they belong to. There is the need for capacity building towards enhancing indigenous language skills of the Adult/Mass Literacy educators who will be saddled with the responsibility of teaching and enlightening them in areas such as skills acquisition and skills enhancement, entrepreneurial development and subsequent utilization for economic transformation. We have to look towards the rural populace who has a lot of traditional skills and ingenuity to showcase both to Nigeria and the world. The quest for sustainable economy should take us to the rural people to harness their untapped potentials for the much desired national growth and economic transformation. The paper advocates that such a programme be done in the indigenous languages. Thus, the rural educators need to be abreast with indigenous languages to properly harness the entrepreneurial potentials that abound in the rural people and the unschooled. The paper calls for a concerted effort and synergy among all stakeholders for capacity building in the indigenous Nigerian languages towards co-coordinating and harnessing the enormous talents and potentials embedded with the rural populace who are mostly unschooled. This can be done effectively when we identify the indigenous languages needs for training and retraining purposes.

It analyses the different language teaching methods and discuses their strengths and weaknesses. This paper also touches on the different approaches that gave rise to various methods of language teaching. This paper adopts a descriptive approach. The paper finds that in Nigeria, those involved in making language education policies are still struggling to keep abreast with latest developments in language teaching methods. The paper also finds that adopting just one particular method of language teaching may not suffice for modern language teaching given the dynamic nature of language itself and the teaching methods that are evolving in tune with advancements in the contemporary times. New trends in language teaching methods are discussed. There are many contemporary issues on language teaching methods that are yearning for the attention of education policy makers, those that ensure implementation of these policies and the language teachers as well. This paper advocates that Nigeria should keep abreast with contemporary developments in language teaching which emphasis communicative competence and carry out a gradual overhaul of the system which may entail improving upon or dropping some methods if necessary.
