This double CD set includes two remastered and outstanding California sessions on one disc. The first disc reproduces a jam recorded in San Diego in March 1975 by the tenor saxophonist Harold Land. The frontline soloists are: the great East Coast trumpeter Blue Mitchell, and the fabulous West Coast saxes of Harold Land, Buddy Collette and Art Pepper; playing tunes such as 'Milestones' and 'Over the Rainbow'. The second disc includes the five titles recorded in concert at the legendary Pasadena Civic Auditorium, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Charlie Parker's death. Obviously, the repertoire was classic tunes performed by Bird ('Groovin' High', 'Donna Lee', 'Ornithology', etc), played here by an All Star quintet featuring Art Pepper on alto sax, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Joe Albany on piano, and Harry Babasin on bass.

After living in Denmark and collaborating with Danes for years, one could call Tobias Wiklund more than a little Danish. Still, he has always been a Swede, remaining true to his northern Scandinavian roots of nature and nurture and having recently returned to his homeland of Sweden. And while Wiklund is a celebrated trumpet player, he chooses to explore his original music on cornet. As an artist, he stands outas a fabulous instrumentalist and an innovative composer.

By the time Joe Henderson went into the studio for the 1973 sessions that would become Multiple, he had undergone a thorough metamorphosis. His last Blue Note dates (for Mode for Joe) were in 1966 and his first for Milestone were the following year (for The Kicker); Multiple would be his eighth album for his new label in just six short years. Between the freedom offered by Orrin Keepnews at Milestone and the fire and fervor of the era, Henderson had become one of the most interesting figures on the early '70s jazz scene, with albums that seamlessly bridged the gap between post-bop, spiritual jazz, and the electrically-tinged fusion of the time. And, if Henderson was one of the Blue Note artists whose importance didn't become clear until many years after his time on the label, his stint at Milestone was even less considered; only recently has it garnered the wide respect it's always deserved.

Many live albums from the golden age of jazz have titles that explicitly evoke the storied environs in which they were recorded—Village Vanguard, the Lighthouse, Ronnie Scott's, the Keystone—where the history of the venue imparts its own sort of co-sign on the music that was performed there. Those naming conventions also help the listener imagine themselves in the room at the same time, and, typically, in the name of consistency, these recordings occurred during a single stretch of shows. Getz Au Go Go breaks several of these rules. Its title comes from the storied Greenwich Village club, the Cafe Au Go Go (where Lenny Bruce was arrested and Grateful Dead played their first N.Y.C. show), and indeed, most of these tracks were recorded in that smoky, intimate setting on an evening in May 1964.

Its inspired format ventures spontaneously beyond the trademark sounds that fueled their superstardom and years of Billboard chart-topping successes into something entirely new, and fresh. A must listen for any fan of these artists.

Sérgio Mendes & Bossa Rio's Você Ainda Não Ouviu Nada! (1964) is a true milestone in the evolution of Brazilian instrumental music post-bossa nova. Infinitely sophisticated, but still full of swing, Bossa Rio (Tiao Neto, bass; Edison Machado, batteries, Edson Maciel, Raul de Souza and Hector Costita, metals) deal here with the reinvention of bossa classics and original songs.

The Nelson Riddle Orchestra was always great enough to play music for film and television soundtracks, and accompany the greatest of stars, including Louis Jordan, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among many others. For the band to back up the 1963 version of the Oscar Peterson trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen might have created some tension, with Peterson always wanting to cut loose and go over the top as opposed to the silky smooth sound Riddle favored. Fortunately, Peterson strikes a balance between playing it cool and lettin' 'er rip on this collection of standards with the dinner hour in mind. Though not exclusively subtle and romantic, Riddle and Peterson strike a golden bipartisan compromise in rendering these well-known American popular songs into quietly burning embers of pure delight…

Faced with the choice of any single Bud Powell date to aptly represent his intense musical genius, choosing Jazz Giant would not be a bad bet. Culled from two sessions (spring 1949 and winter 1950) this Verve release showcases the master of bebop piano leading a trio - a setting in which he excelled. With impeccable support from bassist Ray Brown and drummer Max Roach, (substitute Curly Russell for Brown on the later date), an inspired Powell roars through a varied selection of original tunes and standards. In the category of brisk burners, we get one of his best-known compositions, the ebullient "Tempus Fugit." Ray Noble's "Cherokee," Harold Arlen's "Get Happy," and the ever-popular "Sweet Georgia Brown" are all taken at almost the same exhilarating clip…

John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped. Coltrane's playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory; he sticks exclusively to tenor on the date. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections.

1960 was almost all about jazz and blues! So much in fact that the great names of that era are still the ones everyone refers to today, including: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Bill Evans Trio, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, and B.B. King.
Rock and pop were not yet as prevalent as they would become a few years later with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but the pioneers of the genre—Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, The Ventures—were already paving the way.

Marilyn Monroe was not much of a recording artist per se, but she sang in many of her motion pictures. This European two-CD set presents dialogue and musical performances drawn directly from the soundtracks to the movie musicals Ladies of the Chorus, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The River of No Return, and There's No Business Like Show Business. She also sings briefly in non-musicals Niagra, Bus Stop, and The Prince and the Showgirl, plays "Chopsticks" in The Seven Year Itch, and exchanges witticisms with Groucho Marx in Love Happy; and there are a few stray non-movie song recordings. The second half of the second disc is taken up by miscellaneous recordings, not all of them musical, including a TV commercial, the presentation of several awards (she says, "Thank you"), radio sketches with Edgar Bergen and Jack Benny, and Monroe's appearances in Korea (singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend") and at the 1962 birthday party for President Kennedy at which she sang "Happy Birthday".

This deluxe release from the classy (but long defunct) Artists House label, as with all of Art Pepper's recordings of his comeback years, is easily recommended. This album has lengthy versions of "So in Love," "Stardust," "Straight No Chaser" and two Pepper originals ("Diane" and "Blues for Blanche"). Assisted by two equally talented rhythm sections (pianists Hank Jones and George Cables, bassists Ron Carter and Charlie Haden, and drummers Al Foster and Billy Higgins), Pepper is in excellent form throughout the album, giving these songs heart-wrenching interpretations.
