Our research was not limited strictly to existing relevant scholarly works but was expanded to include new material, both published and unpublished. Following a detailed and documented Introduction, the results of our research are presented in three catalogues: first, the relevant printed editions, followed by the related manuscript material, and finally a prosopographical catalogue.
From this overall research, 21 relevant printed editions and 93 manuscripts have emerged, along with 4 additional manuscripts for which only brief references exist, possibly also belonging to the period under examination. It is noteworthy that some of these manuscripts are presented here for the first time.
The prosopographical catalogue includes 56 individuals who were engaged in the hagiographical and liturgical production during the period under examination. These include bishops, clergy, monks, as well as laypeople.
Concentrating on these vitae or synaxaria, owing to the lack of data concerning the lives of the majority of local saints, a number of anonymous Cypriot clergy or monks undertook the task to create the aforesaid synaxaria, actually by compilation of data from synaxaria of other -usually not so common- saints, together with local traditions. It's to be underlined that in most of these compiled forged synaxaria, the so called "alamanic theory" consists the main "hagiological" backround.
Following our research, the following cases of local saints have been detected with a forged synaxarion: 1. Anastasius, a holy ascetic in Peristerona of Famagusta. 2. Afxentius, also a holy ascetic in Kome Kepir of Carpasia. 3. Hermogenes, bishop of Samos and hieromartyr. 4. Efxifios, bishop of "Alamania" (= Saint Auxibius, first bishop of Soloi). 5. The holy ascetics Heliophotos and his companions in the area Acheras of Nicosia. 6. Therapon hieromartyr, bishop of "Alamania". 7. Ionas, a holy ascetic in Pergamos near Larnaca. 8. Cendeas, a holy ascetic in Avgorou near Famagusta (BHG 2065). 9. Constantine the "Alaman" (=the new martyr), in Ormideia of Famagusta. 10. Polychronius the hieromartyr. 11. Martyrs Rheginus and Orestes.
Every forged synaxarion is examined separetely and in most cases the sources of each compilation are being detected.
In the present article, following a breaf and annotated reference to the existing information about the person and early cult of st. John, we publish for the first time a festal canon in his honour, surviving, as in codex unicus, in the ms. Sin. Gr. 699, which consists a collection of holy services in honour of several saints and is dated to 14th cent. The hereby edited canon is complexed in the cited ms. with that of st. martyr Dometius the Persian, both placed on the 4th of October, the traditionally only known feast day of st. John the Lampadistes. Although this canon is a compilation and lacks of any originality, it bears a multiple value. It consists the earliest surviving testimony for the hymnographical honour of st. John, compiled during a period and in a place where it was difficult to compose an original special service in his honour. Nevertheless, the anonymous compiler had undoubtedly in mind the mainest points of the saint's ancient Vita, as well as miracles from the existing oral and local tradition.
This text was first published in a pamphlet, commemorative for the event of inauguration of a chapel devoted to saint Modestos in Astromeritis village, Nicosia 2016, pp. 5-11, reprinted here, with some corrections and addition of the most important bibliography.
