This paper explores the impact of an introductory session on data journalism conducted with second-year journalism students at Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece. The study aims, through a focus group survey, to assess the students’ initial understanding and beliefs about data journalism and explores how an educational activity, structured as a onetime workshop utilizing a resource from the Al Jazeera Media Institute and data journalism project examples from the BBC, can elucidate the notion of data journalism and stimulate interest in the field.
This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the integration of data journalism into journalism curricula and the training of the next generation of journalists. Therefore, the findings could provide valuable insights for educators in understanding journalism students’ perception of data journalism in order to develop effective curricula and teaching methods for data journalism.

Availability of advanced mobile technologies provides several benefits to e-learning by creating an additional channel of access with mobile devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. This paper describes the design issues that were considered for the development and the implementation of a CAT on mobile devices, the CAT-MD (Computerized Adaptive Test on Mobile Devices). Throughout the development of the system, formative evaluation was an integral part of the design methodology. The recommendations, suggestions and the results of the formative evaluation were used to improve the system in order to make the assessment procedure more effective and efficient. These results of the formative evaluation are also presented here.

In parallel, the use of computerized-adaptive testing (CAT) has expanded mainly due to the advancements in communication and information technology. The introduction of mobiles devices into the learning pedagogy can compliment e-learning and e-testing by creating an additional channel of assessment with mobile devices. Although, mobile computing has become an important and interesting research issue, little research has been done on the implementation of CAT using mobile devices. The current study describes the design issues that were considered for the development and the implementation of a CAT on mobile devices, the CAT-MD (Computerized Adaptive Testing on Mobile Devices).

Today's university students-in western societies mainly-have been born and raised in a digital world; consuming, providing, and sharing information over the internet 24/7. In that respect, it is interesting to examine whether OERs are a type/kind of information that they would like to "consume, provide, and share" throughout their studies in a formal university course. The paper focus on the attitude toward OERs of students enrolled in a film studies course, offered by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. The aim of the study is to provide film educators with evidence regarding their students' attitudes toward OERs that can be useful in designing teaching strategies to enhance the learning process. Findings suggest that film students want to use OERs in their studies but many of them are not aware that these resources exist and that they are offered from highly recognized institutions and universities worldwide. Therefore, university teachers should assist students to develop familiarity with OERs of high quality and educational value as a useful aid to their studies.

Therefore it is important to extend CAT's functionality to include more variables in its student model that define the examinee as an individual beyond the mastery level, for improved performance and more efficient test delivery. This paper examines variables that can prompt adaptation and discusses their potential use in a hypothetical student model for CAT. The objective of this effort is to provide researchers, designers, and developers of CAT a perspective for exploiting research outcomes from the area of personalised hypermedia applications.

This study investigates the hypothesis that adaptive hypermedia accommodating cognitive styles can be beneficial for the observed learning outcomes. A prototype system, designed to be adapted to individual cognitive styles, was developed as a case study. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the prototype system, an empirical study was conducted. This paper presents the results of the summative evaluation of the system. Statistical analyses indicated that students in the experimental group performed significantly better than students in a control group. These findings indicate that student performance is mainly affected by adaptivity based on individual cognitive styles.

One of the most commonly cited problems with educational hypermedia is related to the design and structure of the educational material. It appears that Web-based instructional authors have not had access to an instructional model, which has been empirically tested. However, there is a large body of knowledge in the field of instrl!~tional design from which one can draw suitable conclusions for the design process of Web-based educational hypermedia. The current research recommends that a precondition for effective Web-based courseware design in higher education is careful consideration of the traditional body of knowledge in the field of instructional design which should act as a foundation for future developments in the design process. In addition, the end-users' input should be sought as it can confirm the above and enhance further our understanding toward the implementation of this new medium in higher education.

From all the variables presented that triggers adaptation, modelling of 'knowledge on the domain presented', 'background-experience', 'preferences', 'personal data' and 'mental models' can produce more efficient CATs in terms of time, as fewer items will be needed to assess performance. Moreover, it could affect items' quality, since items can be more complex taking into account user characteristics, resulting in testing sessions that can contribute to the learning process and not merely arrange examinees on a problem complexity scale.

In the introduction, I discuss very briefly the movement from oral to electronic communication, since McLuhan's notion of the 'global village' is part of his whole argument about oral and print culture. In the first chapter, I examine what McLuhan meant when he argued in the 1960's that a 'global village' is created by the repercussions of the new electromagnetic discoveries. In order to do this I consider his argument as a whole, and I also examine what the words 'global' and 'village' meant for him, taking into consideration factors that arise from his cultural context and also the influences on his academic career. In the second chapter, I consider whether the Internet is the 'global village' that McLuhan argued about. To do this I try to give a full account of what the Internet is, and what kinds of community it constructs and sustains.

However, most of the empirical research on the adoption of OER in higher education is conducted in the US, while Europe and other countries, including Greece, fall behind. To that end, this research focused on the awareness and use of OER by higher education students and educators within the Graphic Arts discipline in Greece, to provide evidence regarding the adoption of OER to university administrations and libraries and encouraging their use across campus. The findings suggest that awareness is low, especially among undergraduate students, despite the fact that educators are aware of OER and already share their work as such. This paradox is probably related to students’ vague knowledge of what OER are and how to use them for learning. Therefore, actions are required from educators, university administration and librarian...

Its design is based on an evaluation framework developed from the integration of a number of important issues emerged from research on instructional design and system evaluation the past fifteen years and is concerned with both social and practical acceptability of hypermedia courseware. The term social acceptability is related with the social basis of an educational system. Practical acceptability is examined through the evaluation of the following sectors: content, presentation and organization of the content, technical support and update processes and finally, the evaluation of learning. All sectors are equally important, as hypermedia courseware has to be simultaneously pedagogically and technically sound. The paper first discusses other evaluation efforts; next it introduces the evaluation framework and finally presents the evaluation instrument and suggests ways for the analysis of the results.

Therefore, actions are required from educators, university administration and librarians to inform students of the benefits of OER adoption in the educational process as well as to communicate educators’ OER efforts to students. Moreover, participants identified as the biggest obstacle for adopting OER in Graphic Arts the lack of a portal that accommodates OER for this discipline, which lays the groundwork for further research.
