With that in mind, this chapter has three aims. The fi rst is to analyze the dominant prism under which foreign policy making is navigated in Greece. The second, through an examination of the various studies that have been undertaken on Turkey and the media in Greece, is to present and discuss the dominant discourse and position of the media on foreign policy issues and in so doing analyze their role as a factor that contributes to the aggravation and perpetuation of the confl ict between the two countries. The third, but not the least, is to discuss the prospect of another approach of the media, an approach that does not conceive the relations between Greece and Turkey as a zero-sum game but creates opportunities to consider and to value non-confrontational and more balanced perspectives of the differences troubling both countries, emphasizing not what divides them but seeking to uncover and present areas of reconciliation.

This is not to argue that the social media were “responsible” for the uprisings. The uprisings were made by the people of the Arab countries, but the social media acted as a powerful accelerant facilitating the events in ways that were crucial. In particular, and with emphasis on Egypt, we examine: (a) the socioeconomic dynamics and human insecurity of the region and (b) the role of the social media prior and during the uprisings in empowering “social non-movements” and “leaderless networks”, and igniting public mobilization, enabling civic engagement and journalism, as well as collaboration between activists at regional and global level.

In this direction, EU-media relations are adopted as an analytical framework to discuss the communication deficit within the realm of EU democratic shortcomings. Based on the findings we develop recommendations and suggestions that could facilitate and contribute to the legitimacy of the EU and consequently also enhance trust in European institutions.

There is a lack of research on how journalists from member states of the EU periphery deal with EU affairs. Greece being one of those member states is in our opinion an interesting case study, given circumstances like the financial or refugee crisis. We look at the challenges Greek journalists face in dealing with EU affairs, those they share with journalists from other countries, and those that are unique to the Greek case. We also look at certain coping strategies Greek journalists engage with in dealing with those challenges. Via our discussion we wish to offer a deeper insight into EU periphery journalists’ approaches to dealing with EU affairs and make recommendations for further research towards this direction.

Thus, there is need to problematize the supposed 'imminent threat' of 'post-truth'. Any discussion regarding the 'post-truth challenge' for today's Europe in general cannot be productive if we do not take into account the developments associated with the characteristics of information management. There is a need to juxtapose the 'post-truth' of the post-modern and post-industrial communication environment with the modernist notion of propaganda, not only to acquire the adequate theoretical evidence in order to assess whether we are dealing with a new phenomenon (post-truth), a 'new' version of an 'old' phenomenon (postpropaganda), but also to identify similarities and differences in terms of their causes, characteristics and possible implications for the EU.

Since then a handful of texts have sought to further describe and explore the notion, moving beyond the initial definition given by the Oxford Dictionary. This paper rejects the term 'post-truth', in favor of propaganda; since post-truth tends to be utilised as an evaluative term of contemporary political public discourse, as articulated by specific politicians, predominantly through social media. Taking the field of information management as its starting point, our approach underlines the diachronic character of persuasion efforts through information management, understood as propaganda in the public sphere. As a notion, propaganda, in contrast to post-truth, encapsulates both the diachronic character of information management in the public sphere and the groundbreaking transformation of the process of personal opinion expression, initially described by the spiral of silence model, through the emergence of new interactive media.

In particular, the Greek media have played a significant role in constructing the entire NGO sector as ethically corrupt, arguing that behind their do-gooder façade lie ulterior motives (Valvis 2014). To criticize, however, the whole NGO sector for lack of accountability, transparency and of non-democratic behavior not only fails to understand the political environment within which Greek NGOs have to operate, but also produces serious ambiguities regarding their presence and contribution. Bearing that in mind, in this commentary we briefly analyze the reasons behind the problematic image of the NGO sector in Greece. In so doing, we also discuss why and how the economic crisis since 2010 has provided NGOs with new opportunities to increase their inter-organization communication, and cooperate on the basis of a wider political and social agenda. We conclude by suggesting particular recommendations on the organization, administration, identity and communication of NGOs in Greece.

Their image is negative. With that in mind, the aim of this article is to examine the environment within which Greek NGOs have to operate, and in particular, the interaction between NGOs, the state and the media. In so doing, the following questions will be asked and analysed: first, what is the role and position of Greek NGOs in their interaction with the political system and the media? Are they an expression of bottom-up and citizen volunteerism or a top-down process? How does this enhance or undermine their autonomy and credibility? Second, which opportunities are available to Greek NGOs in a society where culture, combined with the unprecedented economic crisis, heavily doubts and challenges their existence and importance?
