Whereas most existing literature takes a pedagogical perspective, this research focuses on interlanguage as a tool to aid investigation with the potential of adding to evidence. It draws on data from L1 German students writing in English but unlike other studies, it applies the frame work to ‘real-life’ data; in particular texts posted on internet chat fora.
This research takes a multivariate approach to determine the linguistic differences and similarities between L1 American and L1 German speakers writing in English and investigates to what degree of certainty we can determine the mother tongue of an unknown author. The study also examines the interlanguage of L1 Persian speakers writing in English.
The paper demonstrates that Interlanguage has the potential to be a valuable key in identifying the mother-tongue of unknown authors, and calls for a standardised method to ensure analysts in this field are useful at both an investigative and evidentiary level, without sacrificing linguistic validity.

It presents findings from research identifying which linguistic features were the best indicators of native (L1) Persian speakers blogging in English, and analyses how these features cope at distinguishing between native influences from languages that are linguistically and culturally related. The first chapter section outlines the area of Native Language Identification, and demonstrates its potential for application through a discussion of relevant case history. The next section discusses a development of methodology for identifying influence from L1 Persian in an anonymous blog author, and presents findings. The third part discusses the application of these features to casework situations as well as how the features identified can form an easily applicable model and demonstrates the application of this to casework. The research presented in this chapter can be considered a case study for the wider potential application of NLID.

Forensic linguistics is a sub-field of applied linguistics and is concerned with language relating to the law and forensic settings. Due to the expansive nature of this relatively new field, only the main areas of forensic linguistics are considered (these should by no means be considered the limits of forensic linguistics). Through a discussion of casework and research this article aims to increase awareness and provide an introduction into the field of forensic linguistics and its potential applications.
