Research on the transgender population is often limited to their medical care, and in particular ... more Research on the transgender population is often limited to their medical care, and in particular to their mental well-being. The social and family environment in which a social gender role transition takes place is often overlooked. Although research is limited, this article reviews the existing literature on the family aspect of a gender transition. Articles regarding three different aspects were selected for this review: first, the issue of parenthood during transition and the experiences of children with a transgender parent, second, the experiences of partners and ex-partners of transgender individuals, and third, the experiences of parents with a gender variant child. Articles were restricted to those with a focus on family members and situations during transition. For all three contexts, several mediating factors, both individual and social, were distinguished. Various challenges for future research were identified.
Drawing on qualitative interview data from a sample of 54 men and women engaged in living apart t... more Drawing on qualitative interview data from a sample of 54 men and women engaged in living apart together (LAT) partnerships in Belgium (Flanders), this study explored the organization and exchange of money in LAT arrangements. The data showed that the heterogeneity of LAT partnerships is reflected in couples' monetary behavior, with couples who foresee cohabitation (transitional LATs) showing more marriage-like exchanges of financial support than those who perceive living apart together as a more permanent arrangement (permanent LATs). The economic position of the partners and the importance attached to economic independence and breadwinning mediate the impact of future expectations on the financial practices of LAT couples. The data also showed that traditional notions of gender and coupledom continue to be strongly influential, even in nontraditional types of partnerships.

Nevertheless, research examining whether fathers and mothers are equally important to the well-being of children remains underdeveloped. For this reason, we investigate first whether the impact of maternal and paternal parenting is equally important to the well-being of children after divorce. Second, we examine whether maternal and paternal parenting is equally important for children's well-being in different custodial arrangements. Using constraint-moderated structural equation models, we analyse a subsample of the 'Divorce in Flanders' dataset, which contains information on 363 children and their divorced parents. Results reveal that the impact of maternal and paternal parenting is equally important to the well-being of children. This remains the same for both children in joint custody and in families with non-residential fathers. Parental support has a particularly strong effect in improving the well-being of children. The parenting of divorced fathers is therefore just as important to the well-being of children as is the parenting of divorced mothers.

Het sociologenbedrijf in Vlaanderen is immers nogal Jc1ein en bovendien geografisch verbrokkeld over de verschillende universiteiten, die vaak nog zijn opgesplitst in departementen, vakgroepen of onderzoeksgroepen. Het gevolg hiervan is dat jonge onderzoekers vaak geen zicht hebben op de materies waar anderen mee bezig zijn, waardoor belangrijke interactiemogelijkheden niet worden benul Omdat het wetenschapsbedrijf een sector is die zich ontwikkelt door interactie -en dat niet enkel via tijdschriftartikels -leidt het gebrek aan uitwisselingsmogelijkheden ertoe dat enerzijds het aanwezige potentieel niet ten volle wordt benut, en anderzijds dat het 'isolement' niet bevredigend is voor de individuele onderzoekers.
