Women in the digital streams of history. Women's themes on Polish YouTube history

In this article, the authors confront the thesis found in historical discourse about the dominanc... more In this article, the authors confront the thesis found in historical discourse about the dominance of male figures in historical narratives. In order to do so, they analyse the new research field that is the social networking site YouTube and the most popular channels on historical topics contained therein. The main research question is whether women are marginalised in the narratives contained in the sources discussed, in which contexts they appear and what is the reception of the films in which they appear. In addition, the authors look at the question of the form of historical narratives. The study combines quantitative methods (descriptive statistics, correspondence analysis) as well as qualitative methods (Northrop Frye’s typology of story motifs). For this purpose, 551 films were analysed and then annotated using seven groups of tags corresponding to the content of the sources ‑ concerning the functioning of female characters and the subject matter of the films. As a result of the analyses carried out, it was observed that the thesis of the absolute dominance of male characters in historical narratives does not fully hold true under the conditions of Web 2.0 sources in terms of quantity, while in terms of content it cannot be accepted unreservedly in the context of the very diverse use of female themes in social media resources.

Political controversies concerning the memory of historical events have adapted to the digital sp... more Political controversies concerning the memory of historical events have adapted to the digital specificity of Twitter and are currently growing in significance. This study investigates the sentiment bias of a memory war between two major Polish political parties, the currently ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party and Civic Platform (PO), the main opposition party, concerning Polish-Jewish relations, and especially the Holocaust. Totally, 23699 PO Tweets and 29,441 PiS Tweets from 2015 to 2019 were collected, out of which, 241 concerning memory war were sampled with a lexicon-based approach. Sentiment was analysed using tweet-based consensual coding with an ordinal five-point scale and automated word-based coding with a three-point scale. PiS tweets had more positive sentiment regarding the memory of the Holocaust and Jewish legacy in Poland. The final hermeneutical analysis showed that the rulling party narratives were aimed appropriation of collective memory and “Polonizing” the Holocaust, and that the positive sentiment was a function of ‘positive anti-Semitism’.

Enviromental and cultural contexts of the pandemic in Poland In the paper the socially significant issue of the relationship between the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the discourses about the disease was addressed, their infl uence on social attitudes towards pandemic and how in the spoken debates the patocenotic thinking (Mirko Grmek paradigm on relation between pathogens and pandemics and other dependencies e.g. social, economic, cultural) is presented. The analysis covered three main fields of discourses: 1) scientific-expert (reports of Polish Academy of Sciences, articles of polish medical society), 2) patient-expert (medical advice portals), 3) bottom-up and non-expert discourses (social media). The determinations were made on the errors in both public communication and expert discourse, functioning of technicized and medialized medical advice portals, emotional dimension of discourses in social media, as well as polarization of all those fields.

Historical narrative in the age of Web 2.0 Research problem, methods, discussion This article resulted from the research on the resources of the YouTube multimedia platform in Polish. Its authors were most interested in the video resources which met the following criteria: • their theme is historical, pertaining to historical events, characters, and artefacts; moreover, presenting this (historical) subject matter is the main purpose for running the channel and not a contingent theme; • their basic area of operation is YouTube; this means that, in this article, the authors refrain from examining channels 1 generated by the institutions whose core activities take place elsewhere (museums, television programmes, magazines); • they have a noticeable on-line presence, that is, they have reached a significant number of views and subscriptions (100 thousand and 10 thousand respectively). Bearing in mind the dynamic variability of network resources, the article does not pretend to be a "guide" to YouTube, not even its Polish-speaking assets. The Authors were more interested in the peculiarities of the structuring, presentation, and use of historical information that could be seen in the studied videos than in creating a comprehensive catalogue of YouTube content, which would quickly go out of date 2 .

W niniejszym artykule autor przedstawia stosowanie metod analizy przetwarzania języka naturalnego... more W niniejszym artykule autor przedstawia stosowanie metod analizy przetwarzania języka naturalnego (NLP) w obszarze polskich badań. W analizie uwzględniono trzy pola badawcze: socjologiczne, politologiczne oraz literaturoznawcze. Omówione zostały prace takich badaczy jak Marek Troszyński, Paweł Matuszewski oraz Maciej Eder. Efektem przeprowadzonej analizy było nakreślenie najważniejszych aspektów metodologicznych związanych z używaniem metody NLP: kontekstów, możliwości oraz zagrożeń. Finalnie wskazano dalsze perspektywy badawcze, w których stosowanie omawianych metod może przynieść potencjalnie pozytywne rezultaty.

In the following paper author discuss the natural language processing method (NLP) usage in polish academic literature. In the analysis three fields were pointed out: sociology, political science and literature science. Three groups of texts were presented from Marek Troszyński, Paweł Matuszewski and Maciej Eder. As the result of the conducted analysis author emphasized the most important methodological aspects of NLP usage: contexts, opportunities and risks. Finally, author indicated areas for the further research where NLP would be beneficial method.

Artykuł poświęcony jest funkcjonowaniu wiedzy historycznej w Polsce w mediach społecznościowych. ... more Artykuł poświęcony jest funkcjonowaniu wiedzy historycznej w Polsce w mediach społecznościowych. Podstawą badania jest badanie ilościowe przeprowadzone drogą internetową w marcu 2019 r. Projekt ankiety, wypełnionej przez 2200 respondentów, został oparty o dotychczasowy dyskurs dotyczący świadomości historycznej. Powołując się na prace Jana Pomorskiego, Barbary Szackiej i Niny Assorodobraj autorzy dokonali zestawienia samooceny wiedzy historycznej użytkowników mediów społecznościowych, ich zainteresowań tematycznych, trendów popularności środków przekazu oraz wpływu mediów epoki przed Web 2.0 (film, telewizja, gry komputerowe). W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy autorzy stworzyli charakterystykę społecznego zapotrzebowania na narracje historyczne (public history), a także nakreślili obecny stan społecznej roli historii w obszarze, jakim jest rozrywka (cyfrowy homo ludens). Praca ta stanowi element szerszego autorskiego projektu badań nad świadomością historyczną oraz funkcjonowaniu wiedzy historycznej w Polsce z towarzyszącymi mu analizami szczegółowymi zawartymi w innych tekstach. The article discusses the condition of historical knowledge in Poland in social media. The study is based on a quantitative survey performed online in March 2019. The survey, filled out by 2200 respondents, was designed following the contemporary discourse on historical awareness. Quoting the works of Jan Pomorski, Barbara Szacka, and Nina Assorodobraj, the authors compared self-assessed historical knowledge of social media users with their interests, media popularity trends, and the impact of media of the pre-Web 2.0 era (film, television, computer games). Based on this analysis, the authors created a description of social need for historical narratives (public history), and presented the contemporary condition of the social role of history in entertainment (digital homo ludens). This work is a part of a broader original research project on historical awareness and the condition of historical knowledge in Poland with detailed analyses included in other texts.

The main research problem dealt with the matter of the meaning of the historical narrative for the contemporary polish society and the specificity of its historical consciousness. 635 videos from 6 channels since 2013 till 2019 were analyzed. Authors point out the relation between the quantitative analysis of the videos' topics with the current trends of interests in history present in the society. Functioning of the most popular videos' trends were emphasized and its connection with their qualitative layer of the historical narrative. Further research on the hypothesis on the ethnocentric interest in history was conducted. The results show that belief in the more democratic, egalitarian character of the new media compared to the traditional corporate model of the mass-media industry may be a delusion as large mass media corporations have also had a great impact on the functioning of social networking sites.

This article is in a sense a dialogue devoted to the presence of conspiracy theories on social me... more This article is in a sense a dialogue devoted to the presence of conspiracy theories on social media and mass culture. The authors present the current state of research on the development of digital culture and its social consequences. Next, a case study of the existence of the conspiracy theory of so-called Wielka Lechia is presented. In the analysis the authors combine theoretical and technical considerations of Web 2.0 with research inquiry, which is the analysis of the structure of the Great Lechia theory in social media. of the slogan, its evolution and impact on the political self-presentation of the candidate
for US president offi ce. Project combines the perspective of dynamic approach of the Web
History and Contemporary History, static approach of the political science and media studies
together with the statistical natural language processing and sentiment analysis. In the end author
concludes that there is a vital relation between the archetypic myth of the beginnings and
political slogan and its nostalgic character.

In the first example, the authors present the thought of Niels Brügger, called the Web History and Web-minded historiography, which concentrates upon the digital source itself. The other school is marked by the works of Friedrich Kittler and Wolfgang Ernst, and called media archaeology. It underlines the concept of the medium itself as a primary object of research.

In this article, the authors aim to analyze medical narratives concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. ... more In this article, the authors aim to analyze medical narratives concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. The main research problem was the reconstruction of historical thinking present directly and indirectly in the analyzed texts, the identification of the significance of historical argumentation, and the examination of the presence of key historical metaphors: genesis, evolution, breakthrough, and crisis. The authors point out that even where key metaphors are not directly found, we can still indirectly detect the category of variability, which constitutes the historical thinking of the Polish medical and paramedical community. The analysis included reports from the Advisory Team for COVID-19 at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, studies from the Science Against the Pandemic initiative, as well as a group of articles devoted to the impact of the pandemic on various medical and paramedical specializations. Based on the concept of historical thinking by J. Topolski, W. Wrzosek, and W. Werner, individual metaphors were operationalized and then used to deconstruct medical narratives. As a result of this research problem, the authors indicated that historical argumentation was primarily present in the logical-grammatical layer and to a lesser extent in the persuasive layer. In the analyzed works, historical thinking served a subordinate role to medical argumentation, being somewhat of a byproduct of the utilitarian treatment of thinking about the past.

Background of the research is the source reflection of the Scottish Independence Referendum reality on Twitter social network. Phenomenom of new media and their functionality in cyberspace are concerned. Paper presents analysis of source material and its conclusions. Paper ends with consideration of classic historical source definition, new perspective of digital source and the issue of digital history research.

The two main objectives are to analyze trends of the content popularity as well as to deconstruct the historical narratives of the content. In total 635 videos were taken under consideration from 6 grassroots Polish speaking channels aggregating 2.7 million subscribers and 370 million views.

Niniejsza dysertacja poświęcona jest powstawaniu, funkcjonowaniu i recepcji narracji historycznyc... more Niniejsza dysertacja poświęcona jest powstawaniu, funkcjonowaniu i recepcji narracji historycznych w Web 2.0. Praca składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza, zasadnicza, to synteza oraz krytyczna refleksja nad przeprowadzonymi do tej pory badaniami. Na drugą część, przygotowaną w formie aneksu, składa się siedemnaście artykułów i rozdziałów w monografiach autorskich oraz współautorskich, które omawiane i analizowane są w części zasadniczej pracy. Główny problem badawczy rozpatrywany był z trzech perspektyw: teorii i praktyki związanych z analizą narracji historycznych, przydatności metod historii cyfrowej, metodologicznej refleksji nad specyfiką źródeł born digital. Jako obszar empirii wybrane zostały następujące platformy Web 2.0: YouTube, Twitter oraz Facebook. Wynikiem pracy jest zaproponowanie nowej definicji narracji historycznej uwzględniającej treści powstałe oddolnie w oparciu o paradygmat Web 2.0. Definicja ta opiera się na rozumieniu narracji jako przejawu świadomości historycznej ufundowanej na elementach myślenia historycznego i ahistorycznego. W końcowej części pracy przedstawiono metodologiczny namysł nad źródłem cyfrowym. Może być ono traktowane jako efektywne źródło historyczne przy jednoczesnym zastrzeżeniu, iż w wielu aspektach wymyka się tradycyjnemu rozumieniu źródła i jego krytyce, przez co wymusza sięgnięcia po nowe metody badawcze związane z historią cyfrową.
