Rafeeq Hasan
I am an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Amherst College. My research focuses on the social and political dimensions of freedom.
Many people think that freedom is fundamentally about me—i.e., freedom is a quality of my choices and my life. I take the view that freedom is about us. That is, freedom requires just social and political arrangements and so can only be achieved by citizens acting together.
I work from the conviction that the history of political philosophy and contemporary political reality are mutually illuminating. To this end, I engage with philosophers like Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, and Rawls in order to think about issues like poverty, property, and housing.
