The authors present a 3-dimensional competency model delineating the domains of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that serve as the foundation required of all psychologists, the domains of functional competencies that broadly define what psychologists do, and the stages of professional development from doctoral education to lifelong learning through continuing education. The goal in presenting this model is to provide a conceptual frame of reference for those responsible for psychology education, credentialing, and regulation.

Crew (2000) regarding whether there are too many psychologists across the country. The authors of this article make a number of points: (a) Managed care data do not provide meaningful estimates of mental health needs, managed care may not be here to stay, and premature cutbacks in training programs would have serious, long-term consequences; (b) the development of alternative roles beyond direct service delivery was not considered by W. N. Robiner and D. P. Crew; (c) though the internship and licensure data do not indicate rapid growth, there is a worrisome increase in new programs; (d) when compared with data from a local situation (exemplified by New Hampshire), W. N. Robiner and D. P. Crew's data and conclusions become .questionable; and (e) the trend away from working full-time (perhaps the feminization of psychology) and the possibility of more insured lives with national health insurance change the conclusions. Nevertheless, each program's statistics, relevant to supply and demand, should be published. New roles should be developed for psychologists as should new internships.

Results of this study and the new criteria for accreditation indicate that students from approved doctoral programs have a definite advantage in the internship marketplace. Sufficient

However, instruments used to assess psychologists seeking licensure, such as the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), have received relatively little empirical scrutiny. Therefore, the authors evaluated the available evidence in support of the EPPP's validity and current use as a core component of professional licensure. Although the EPPP has in many ways been extensively evaluated, there is a paucity of criterion, predictive, and incremental validity evidence available. Further, several aspects of the content validation studies were examined, and the authors question whether the EPPP, as currently constructed, can meet its stated goals. Given that the EPPP is a high-stakes examination and given the authors' best estimate (based on a sample of 16 states) that 35% of applicants fail the examination, it is recommended that the EPPP be more extensively evaluated. An outline of major decision points in this proposed evaluation process is provided, several suggestions for further research are proposed, and the field is encouraged to discuss these issues further.

Multimodal techniques are combined with hypnosis to provide an effective treatment intervention. After 15 sessions, the client reported no hair pulling. Eight month follow-up reveals continued success in controlling this compulsive behavior.

Moreover, we tested whether clients' perceptions of the working alliance and the real relationship mediated the relationship between clients' perceptions of their psychotherapists' MCO and psychological functioning. The results showed that clients' perceptions of their psychotherapists' MCO were positively related to working alliance, real relationship, and psychological functioning. Only clients' ratings of the working alliance mediated the relationship between clients' perceptions of their psychotherapists' MCO and psychological functioning. Thus, because clients perceive their psychotherapists as being more oriented toward cultural issues, they may view the therapist as being more credible and may gain a sense of comfort in the therapeutic process. In turn, clients' strong alliance facilitates improvement in psychological well-being.
