Therefore, organizations rely on Cyber Situational Awareness (CSA) to support them in better understanding the threats and associated impacts of cyber events. Due to the heterogeneity and complexity of cyber security data, often with multidimensional attributes, sophisticated visualization techniques are often needed to achieve CSA. However, there have been no attempts to systematically review and analyze scientific literature on CSA visualizations until now. In this paper, we have systematically selected and reviewed 54 publications that discuss visualizations to support CSA. We extracted data from these papers to identify key stakeholders, information types, data sources, and visualization techniques. Furthermore, we analyze the level of CSA supported by the visualizations, maturity of the visualizations, chall...

What studies there are tend to be largely descriptive and the topic lacks a theoretically informed framework through which student decisions can be examined and comparative work developed. We outline such a framework drawing on self-determination theory and social cognitive career theory. Our framework comprises five categories: autonomy; relatedness; competence and self-efficacy; outcome expectations; and, goals. To assess its utility, the framework is used to interrogate data generated through a series of focus groups involving PhD students studying in Australia in the area of information and communications technology. The framework proved capable of organizing data in a robust, comprehensive and coherent way.

We have explored some of the perceived barriers to undertaking doctoral studies in ICT in three Australian universities. Current students were surveyed to establish their post-course intentions regarding employ ment and further study. Their reasons for not choosing to go onto research degrees were lin ked largely to concerns about the financial imp lications of such study and a limited understanding of what research in ICT involves. We recommend that ICT students be given accurate informat ion about the costs involved, that students have authentic undergraduate experiences of research, and that smooth pathways be developed to allow students to return to doctoral studies after working in industry. .

What are the factors that motivate students to embark on research degrees? Given that many of those who succeed in completing their doctorates will not go into academic positions, the motivations for choosing to undertake a research degree may not match the experience or outcomes (and hence, perhaps, contribute to incompletion rates). This article investigates the motivations of students in all faculties embarking on higher degrees by research at an Australian university. A survey of 405 students was subjected to a factor analysis. Five factors emerged: Family & Friends, Intrinsic Motivation, Lecturer Influence, Research Experience and Career Progression.
