popular in georgian and victorian times, the bathing machine was intended to keep women safe from prying eyes on the beach | it was a four-wheeled wooden cart with a door on either side which allowed them to change out of their clothes and into their bathing suits without having to walk across the beach in ‘improper clothing’ | the contraption would be rolled out to sea and hauled back in when the beachgoer signalled to the driver by raising a small flag attached to the roof
