Box Kites
Box Kites (cometa en forma de cubo, Kastendrachen). People still have a certain fascination with this rather old kind of kite. A subset of cellular kites, many box kite designs have just 2 cells or flying sections. Some boxes fly on an edge while others fly flat - which is amply demonstrated by these photos. I have included box kites from all eras... T.P. (my-best-kite.com) (cometas, drachen, cerf-volant)

Plain blue it might be, but the big 2.4m (8ft) long Multi-Dowel Box kite is an awesome beast high up in a Moderate breeze! On one occasion this kite even went overhead on a day with strong thermals. It was also a day of wild aerial gyrations as this normally very steady kite encountered plenty of turbulent air high up. Exciting flying on 400 feet of 200 pound braided Dacron! The huge 2.4m (8ft) long Multi-Dowel Box kite soaring about on a cloudy day. It takes a good 15kph or so to get this kite up and away. It's fun to fly on a long line in Moderate wind speeds, during which it heaves like a horse. Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more info, photos and video. This is the Fresh Wind version of the MBK Dowel Box kite. The length and dowel diameters were retained but sail area cut down considerably. Hence it will survive in a breeze gusting to over 40kph. In the photo my very young son was trying to catch the kite and I was making sure he didn't! Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more info, photos and video. This 1.2m (4ft) long Box kite flies well in Gentle to Moderate wind speeds. A 50 pound Dacron flying line is ideal. This style of traditional box can be a bit skittish down low but soon settles down in smoother air above tree height. This was quite a tiny box kite. Hence the loop tail was necessary to keep the kite stable over it's considerable wind range. Cheap to make since it's just thin bag plastic over a bamboo skewer frame. Electrical tape holds the plastic to the bamboo. Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more info, photos and video. T.P. #kite #boxkite #diykites

This lightly-built Dowel Box kite is so called since the the spars are 5mm Tasmanian Oak dowels. The sails are just plastic from cheap garbage bags. Humble but extremely light and non-porous sail material! Not the most durable, but with care months and even years of flying can be had from such a kite. The little MBK 1-Skewer Box kite design. As an experiment, which turned out successful, this kite has a single pair of cross-pieces plus a bracing line. Traditionally, 2 or even 4 cross pieces are used in a 2-celled box kite. Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more info, photos and video. T.P. #kite #boxkite #diykites
Box Kites, And A Few Interesting Variations
We saw this fantastic Cody Kite replica at the Adelaide Kite Festival some years ago. It's a big box kite by today's standards - however the historical originals were big enough and flown several at a time to lift a human observer! No it's not an aircraft from 1920 - it's a very modern box kite! The replication of simple cells makes for a complex flying craft that really catches your attention. We spotted this at the Adelaide International Kite Festival one year. Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more kite info, photos and video. A great Cody kite we spotted at the Adelaide International Kite Festival one year. The red upper sail provides extra lifting force. Presumably it would be removed for flying in fresh to strong wind. Box Kites, And A Few Interesting Variations
This take on the traditional square Box kite looks odd - but apparently flies OK. As seen here. Since the design employs several small panels on each side, it's an excuse to color them all differently to great effect! Box Kites, And A Few Interesting Variations
This close-up of a very neat-looking Cody kite was taken at a local kite festival. If I remember correctly, this kite had carbon tube spars and the sail material was 1/4oz rip-stop nylon. That adds up to great light-wind performance - unusual in a box kite! Click 'Visit' to the page - and try other pages of the site for more kite info, photos and video. T.P. #kite #codykite #boxkite
Adelaide Kite Festival - Plenty Of Photos Plus Videos
Each year, we attend the Adelaide Kite Festival here in South Australia. In this shot, a decent-sized yellow Cody kite is dwarfed by a huge Killer Whale inflatable. Also a contrast between traditional kite craft and modern spar-less designs. The whale is not a true kite though, being more correctly described as 'line laundry'. That's right, it hangs off the flying line of a 'lifter' kite. Click link for videos, photos and commentary on past events. T.P. #kites #killerwhale #codykite
