This can also shed light on why, despite many attempts, process improvement programs often fail to produce such long-term solutions.Design/methodology/approachA case study is carried out to inductively describe and classify problem-solving in companies and to indicate why problem-solving efforts are typically bounded to short-term solutions. The empirical findings are triangulated with findings from the extant literature.FindingsFirst, the authors propose three problem-solving modes with different characteristics and potential impacts on operational performance: intuitive problem-solving, semi-structured problem-solving and systematic problem-solving. Second, by emphasizing dynamic capabilities' micro-foundations and with the focus on learning mechanisms, the authors show that,...

The investigation is conducted over the market cycle of a highly profitable product, e.g. a patented pharmaceutical. In particular, the study evaluates performance effects of different inventory level policies. The paper considers different degrees of availability of a substitute product. Design/methodology/approach The study uses simulation experiments based on system dynamics methodology to derive inventory policies on handling infrequently happening but severe production process breakdowns. The simulation model is inspired by empirical case study research and is based on standard modeling formulations from the literature. Findings The scenario analyses show that the optimal level of safety stock coverage time depends in a highly non-linear manner on various economic parameters and shows threshold behavio...

We test the assumption that people have a tendency to treat continuous delays in real life situations as discrete delays. We created a dynamic task with two different conditions: hiring when personnel stay in an organisation for exactly 10 years (discrete delay condition) or when personnel stay on average for 10 years (continuous delay condition). The task was performed by 79 participants in an experiment. Findings show no differences regarding decisions being made, indicating that participants treat both discrete and continuous delays similarly. Because participants' estimations are substantially closer to the (simulated) system response when a discrete delay is involved, we assume that people have the tendency to treat all types of lags as discrete delays. The results were replicated with two additional experimental tasks that were (i) similar except with respect to task context and (ii) testing the understanding of the two delay types by additional control questions. Research implications are that perception of delay order and understanding consequences of different delay orders play a substantial role for controlling dynamic systems. Practical implications regard making delay order a salient characteristic in decision-making tasks within organisations, for instance, in human resource management, and the training of managers to understand behavior of dynamic systems based on delay order in that system.

The main objective of this theoretical and literature-based article is the presentation of examples showing how deficient managerial decision-making in operations management can be. Supporting indications are gathered from different fields of science, for instance, decision science, psychology, sociology, and biology. Examples of apparently deficient decision-making in production contexts are given. It is shown how the 'theory of constraints' and the broader field of system dynamics offers concepts and methods to mitigate some issues of poor decision-making. Further, the relationship between the 'theory of constraints' and system dynamics is discussed.

These methods focus on generating understanding of systems as a whole, on improving systems, and on personal learning. System dynamics has similar goals; therefore, it might be useful to combine it with soft OR. Some examples of combinations exist; however, these are mainly anecdotal. Thus, systematic research promises new insights and knowledge about the useful combination of soft OR and system dynamics in practice and theory. This has often been asked for but has not yet been established. In this paper a characterization of system dynamics is presented that can be used to find potential combinations of system dynamics and soft OR. More precisely, a framework primarily designed for mapping methods is described. This framework characterizes methods along two dimensions: four steps of intervention processes and three domains, in which problem situations manifest: social, personal, and material world. System dynamics is mapped and thus characterized by this framework. On the one hand, the mapping highlights the strengths of system dynamics; on the other hand, it shows possibilities for useful combinations with soft OR. With this study, further steps to a systematic research of combinations between system dynamics and soft OR are undertaken. Based on the method characterization of system dynamics and soft OR, proposals for concrete combinations can be derived and contextual factors for successful combinations can be investigated.

Emerging markets are increasingly important in global business. With this in mind, the purpose of this paper is to analyze differences in outsourcing strategies between manufacturing firms from emerging markets and from developed markets.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on statistical analyses of a large data set of manufacturing firms obtained from the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS).FindingsThe findings suggest that companies that outsource internationally focus on achieving cost benefits, while companies that outsource domestically focus on achieving capacity flexibility. In addition, the reasons to outsource were found to be independent of the location of firms in both emerging and developed markets. However, within the group of firms from emerging markets, strategies seem to differ according to whether firms are domestically owne...

This research attempts to conceptualize the linkage between brand equity and customer equity from a system dynamics perspective. While isolated models for both concepts exist, they are usually highly abstract and hard to operationalize in day to day marketing management. Conceptualizing the linkage between brand equity and customer equity explicitly in a system dynamics model provides insights on how these two concepts interact with each other and, thus, improves the marketing management decision-making process. This research engages well-known hierarchy of effect models (AIDA and ATR) to investigate the customer development chain related to brand equity and customer equity. The resulting system dynamics model is tested with a variety of initial settings and policy options.

In order to make theoretical investigations of supply chains feasible and to support decision-making in real world supply chains, simulation models are used. An integration of system dynamics and discrete agent-based modeling is a promising combination of methods for reducing the a priori complexity of the model. The paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of system dynamics and discrete agent-based modeling. An approach for integration of the two modeling methodologies is presented. Issues concerning the practical coupling of software environments and a simple, prototypical supply chain model are discussed. Experiments for which the integrated simulation solution is applied are described. Insights in emergent structures in supply chains are derived from these simulation analyses.

In other words, their decisions are neither optimal nor complete nonsense but are affected by their limited cognitive power and the complex structures of the systems in which people are embedded.
