Description
[edit]We should probably reach a consensus on this: Should description read "baseball player from United States" or "American (professional) baseball player"? Based on Help:Description, one could make an argument for either choice. AutomaticStrikeout 21:39, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- I prefer the second. "Baseball player from the United States" implies that the player was born in the United States, while "American professional baseball player" says that they play American professional baseball. TCN7JM 21:46, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Actually, I think "American professional baseball player" makes it sound like they are an American. AutomaticStrikeout 22:34, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- What would you propose, then? TCN7JM 03:38, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
- Well, perhaps something like this (for a Venezuelan Major Leaguer): Venezuelan-born Major League Baseball player/pitcher. Thoughts? AutomaticStrikeout 20:17, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
- Rather than use crazy hyphenated words, I would propose just saying something like "professional baseball player from Venezuela", with the word "professional" maybe even being a bit much. I looked at Help:Description and saw the example for Dwyane Wade and figured that was probably the best way to go about things. TCN7JM 00:44, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good. AutomaticStrikeout 00:50, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

- I also think that all the teams' descriptions should probably be "American professional baseball team" since you can see that they play in the MLB from the "league" property. TCN7JM 21:48, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I suppose you are correct on both points. Also, do we need to use the occupation field? AutomaticStrikeout 21:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think the occupation field is necessary. The "position (on team)" field already states what they do. TCN7JM 22:03, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, you're probably right. AutomaticStrikeout 22:11, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Handedness
[edit]Wikidata:Property_proposal/Person#Handedness probably also concerns this task force. --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:11, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for the note. AutomaticStrikeout 17:38, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Should we use "former" in description
[edit]We are currently suggesting the use of "baseball player/pitcher/umpire/other from the United States" for the description line. Should we use the word "former" at the start of that sentence for those who are no longer active? AutomaticStrikeout 14:52, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I think we should. It helps to identify whether or not the player is no longer active. TCN7JM 18:20, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Division
[edit]Is there a property that can incorporate "division"? StevenJ81 (talk) 01:39, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if there is. Perhaps it could be incorporated into the league property? AutomaticStrikeout 01:53, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- No, but I'm going to go ahead and propose a new property or two. I'll post the link here when it's up. I have a question, too. In the "league" property, the item should be either "American League" or "National League". What, then should be used to portray that the team plays in Major League Baseball, seeing as MLB itself isn't technically a league? TCN7JM 01:55, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Two new properties have been proposed at this page. Feel free to comment. TCN7JM 02:48, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- TCN: Good question. In some ways, MLB is a league, with AL and NL as its conferences. In some ways, not. A little bit, it's a moving target. When I was a kid, they were unquestionably separate: League presidents, separate umpiring crews and so forth. Now, not so clear.
- Re new properties: Maybe we need one property called "division of league" or some such, and anything below the top level league goes there. What this task force would do is to fix how that would be handled for all baseball cases. Will comment over there. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:45, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Hall of Famers
[edit]Is there any property we can use to signify that a player was inducted into the Hall of Fame? AutomaticStrikeout 20:21, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think member of (P463) is the one we're looking for, but I'm not sure whether the item we're claiming it to be should be National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (Q809892) or list of members of the Baseball Hall of Fame (Q649861). TCN7JM 06:11, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think the second one. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:33, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- I actually prefer the first one. We would say that Babe Ruth is a member of the Hall of Fame, not a member of the List of Hall of Famers. However, it's not a big deal. AutomaticStrikeout 15:10, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think the second one. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:33, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
Wikimania 2016

Items with sport=baseball, but no instance of (P31) or subclass of (P279)
[edit]At Wikidata:Database reports/without claims by site, there were a series of baseball related categories with items that had no statements at all.
Based on these categories, I added sport (P641) = baseball (Q5369).
If you are interested in developing these items further, below is a query that finds these (and others):
- Items used: baseball (Q5369)
- Properties used: sport (P641) , instance of (P31) , subclass of (P279)
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel
WHERE
{
?item wdt:P641 wd:Q5369 .
MINUS { ?item wdt:P31 [] }
MINUS { ?item wdt:P279 [] }
SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en,es,pt,it,fr,nl,de,pl,ru,uk,ja,zh" }
}
Currently, it lists 2780 items.

What are the best modelled items for your areas of interest?
[edit]Hi all
Over the past few months myself and others have been thinking about the best way to help people model subjects consistently on Wikidata and provide new contributors with a simple way to understand how to model content on different subjects. Our first solution is to provide some best practice examples of items for different subjects which we are calling Model items. E.g the item for William Shakespeare (Q692) is a good example to follow for creating items about playwright (Q214917). These model items are linked to from the item for the subject to make them easier to find and we have tried to make simple to understand instructions.
We would like subject matter experts to contribute their best examples of well modelled items. We are asking all the Wikiprojects to share with us the kinds of subjects you most commonly add information about and the best examples you have of this kind of item. We would like to have at least 5 model items for each subject to show the diversity of the subject e.g just having William Shakespeare (Q692) as a model item for playwright (Q214917), while helpful may not provide a good example for people trying to model modern poets from Asia.
You can add model items yourself by using the instructions at Wikidata:Model items. It may be helpful to have a discussion here to collate information first.
Thanks
