Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Genre
The genre (genre (P136)) is used to classify paintings as part of the WikiProject sum of all paintings. Most (if not all) paintings should have a genre. Examples of genres are portrait (Q134307), religious art (Q2864737) & genre art (Q1047337). You can see the most used genres at top genres page.
Normalization
[edit]For a lot of genres we have the general art genres (subclass of art genre (Q1792379)) and a specific painting genre (subclass of genre of painting (Q16743958)). When a general art genre exists and the same specific painting genre, the convention is to use the general art genre. This is because a genre is about what we see in the artwork, not how it's made. We do a bit of normalization to reduce redundancy and improve the quality of the data. Common mistakes are when (genre (P136)) is conflated with (movement (P135)) or (depicted format (P7984)).
