WikiProject Books

The aim of the WikiProject Books is:

  • to define a set of properties that can be used by book infoboxes, Wikipedia citation templates, Commons books templates, and Wikisource.
  • to map and import all relevant data that is currently available in Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikisource.
  • to establish methods to interact with this data from different projects

Bibliographic properties

[edit]

We used the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model (a widely used and famous conceptual framework in library science) to divide the Book properties in 2 sets. The FRBR model underlines the fact that you can view a book in 4 different ways, or levels: as a work, as an expression, a manifestation or an item.

Within Wikimedia projects, we don't need all 4 of them: for example, when Wikipedia has an article about a book, it is often in the "work" view (i.e. the Bible, Pinocchio, Hamlet are regarded as "creative works", which have been embodied in several translation and editions and different media).

On Wikisource, a particular edition (sometimes, we have more than one) is used for a book. As we have different Wikisources, we thus have also translations in order to accommodate the readers across the world.

Since it blurs these differences, the item book (book (Q571)) should be avoided - see the item's discussion page.

Not to complicate too much, we didn't use the FRBR terms "expression" or "manifestation", as the boundary between the definitions is not easy to grasp. So we collapsed those two FRBR layers in one: "edition" (in contrast, the BIBFRAME bibliographic data model instead combines the FRBR layers "work" and "expression" in a single "work" entity). Thus a two-layer framework, consisting of work and edition, has been used for creating Book properties in Wikidata.

Edition item properties

[edit]

These properties are for the item that represents the edition of a book (FRBR expression/manifestation level). They are mainly for editions of books used as sources, and so are to be used for items linked to Wikisource editions.

Note that each edition of a book should have a separate Wikidata item. If the content (foreword, afterword, illustration), pagination (page number), publisher, or publication place changes, a new item should be created for that edition. Else if a book is an identical reprint of a previous edition (no change in the mentioned properties), it does not need a new item.

Editions should be instances of version, edition or translation (Q3331189) or one of its subclasses.

Exemplar properties

[edit]

There are a number of wikipedia articles which deal with a single copy of a book which has become notable for some reason. See Lincoln Bible (Q1816474) and the bibles listed in Category:Individual Bibles (Q8546779). These will need different properties from those used for a literary work.

Where there is only one copy of a literary work then the wikidata page may need both sets of properties.

Manuscript properties

[edit]

Manuscripts are single copies of literary works, so a manuscript is not the same as a literary work. All manuscript items need instance of (P31) with one of manuscript (Q87167), illuminated manuscript (Q48498), codex (Q213924), miscellaneous manuscript (Q2217259), palimpsest (Q274076), manuscript fragment (Q30103158). Please specify the writing material for made from material (P186): papyrus (Q125576), paper (Q11472), leather (Q286), parchment (Q226697), shard (Q1463658), vellum (Q378274). The person who writes out the manuscript is indicated with calligrapher (P6819): this is often different from the author of the literary work author (P50). If a different person made the illustrations, they are the illustrator (P110). The time when the manuscript was completed is inception (P571). If the manuscript has (at least some of) the text of a specific literary work (or multiple works), use exemplar of (P1574). If the text is of a type such as Evangeliary (Q1754581), Gospel Book (Q690851), lectionary (Q284465), book of hours (Q727715), or diwan (Q1991869), put that as genre (P136). Choose a location for location (P276) that has the best possible precision, otherwise use the city where collection (P195) is located. If there is an online catalogue record for the manuscript, put the link as described at URL (P973). If the entire manuscript is available online, put that link as full work available at URL (P953).

mw.loader.load( '//ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:WEF_AllEditors.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

AJAX-API editors for items, including person, work and edition wikidata elements, that run from any page of any project. The script allows remote editing of the wikidata element linked to that local page through a comfortable user interface. Add the above script line to your global.js; alternatively you can add it to each wiki individually using your local common.js on the respective wiki.

Scripts are by User:Vlsergey. Further information available at Wikipedia:WE-Framework
