Launch date

Not important, but... on the news section launch date is October 30, 2012, but I think that it should be October 29, because this site was opened yesterday (Oct. 29). --Stryn (talk) 10:45, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That is the official launch date. This wiki was already created last Friday (October 27). --Hydriz (talk) 10:46, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, btw friday is 26th October :) --Stryn (talk) 10:50, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, sorry about the wrong date. :P --Hydriz (talk) 10:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Create a new item

Could you add the link Create a new item in the "Contribute" section please? Thanks. Ayack (talk) 11:39, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This link was originally on the sidebar, till one of the admins removed it as Wikidata is still only getting started. It will probably be added later on. --Hydriz (talk) 12:12, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to translate the main page in other languages?

Could you tell me how to translate the main page in other languages please? Thanks in advance. Ayack (talk) 11:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't the highest priority now, since we are just trying to get things started. When the Main Page really needs to be translated, the Translate extension will then need to be installed. --Hydriz (talk) 12:12, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some people on the Wikipedia I am used to contribute asks : "I understand nothing because everything is in English". I've just created a Main Page in French language Wikidata:Accueil principal, based on how Commons project main page works. --Deansfa (talk) 14:57, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did the same for my language. --Wiki13 (talk) 16:55, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So, the translation extension is already installed. Can we use it for the main page? Helder 12:15, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
I'd like to participate translating the page of Wikidata. Please send me to the link where translation can be done or send it thru my email: [email protected] Geopoet (talk)

Translations have been made (although there is no obvious button to do this, which is not a good sign for a wiki project) but they are not linked to the "choose your language" on the top, which is confusing even for an everyday wikipedia user. Klausthorn (talk) 11:38, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotect mainpage

Please, unprotect mainpage by now : ) I don't see many vandals. Emijrp (talk) 12:55, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its just protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit. The protection sounds reasonable (though I believe most of us don't have autoconfirmed status yet). --Hydriz (talk) 12:57, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What are the limits to become autoconfirmed here ate Wikidata? --TMg (talk) 17:05, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Minimum of 10 edits made and 4 days of account age. This is the global default for all Wikimedia wikis. --Hydriz (talk) 13:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"minimum 4 days" is the global default. But "10 edits" is not. It is only applied for enwiki and some others. -- ChongDae (talk) 09:09, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Favicon

This one!

It should actually already be the correct one. I fear there is still some caching problems involved. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:47, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Languages

For information : Deansfa started a french version at Wikidata:Accueil principal — Ltrl G, le 14:46, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do you like the way it looks in this diff? PiRSquared17 (talk) 15:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's cool this way. Is it possible to move this language's section more on the top of the page, so people could see immediately where to click if they don't understand English. --Deansfa (talk) 16:16, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Without the header is better, no? Like that:
Ayack (talk) 16:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ayack: That's good and easy to fix. @Deansfa How much more on the top of the page? Before the "Welcome" section? PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:35, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Before the "Welcome" section is indeed the right place IMHO. Ayack (talk) 16:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think about this ? --Bene* (talk) 17:20, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Or that (assuming that "Wikidata:Accueil principal" is not displayed)? Ayack (talk) 17:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What to change for the simple english edition? I have just adapted the links yet. Do you have any ideas? --Bene* (talk) 17:38, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization

We have several (all?) meta-pages without category. Could we copy category system from Wikimedia Commons? (commons:Category:CommonsRoot). Przykuta (talk) 21:34, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We now have a basic level of categorisation (with the root category being Category:Contents). There wasn't one as I wasn't sure what the developers what to do with categories when the wiki was just started. --Hydriz (talk) 13:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Layout

I suggest to reduce the space under the "languages" box, add some above and get rid of the first frame (the blue one) as it's already done on French, German or Spanish versions. If an admin reads me... Thanks. Ayack (talk) 11:08, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an admin, but ✓ Done. PiRSquared17 (talk) 15:12, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Language labels and aliases

Is there any way of changing language aliases without switching your preferences to that language? For example, at Watford Football Club (Q2714), I have had to switch my language preferences to add aliases for English (my default is British English), French, German, Italian and Spanish. I would be willing to add labels and aliases for all languages if there were a more straightforward way of doing so. —WFC18:44, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikidata:Contact the development team#Managing core data in different languages — Ltrl G, le 18:56, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! And sorry for posting here rather than Wikidata:Project chat: still learning my way around. —WFC19:09, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

watchlist

Do you know why all pages that I created aren't in my watchlist even I selected the option ? Otourly (talk) 18:52, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think this question should go to Contact the development team — Ltrl G, le 18:55, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When the interface language is set to Vietnamese, clicking the logo leads to Trang Chính, a nonexistent item, rather than Wikidata:Trang Chính. Would an administrator mind changing MediaWiki:Mainpage/vi to Wikidata:Trang Chính? Thank you. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 11:46, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects

Please can an autoconfirmed user create redirects involving the Main Page. At the moment www.wikidata.org leads to a non-existant page, as does the Main page link on the left toolbar, thus making it quite hard to get here. The two I had in mind were as follows, although there might be others worth considering:
Main PageWikidata:Main Page
Talk:Main PageWikidata talk:Main Page.
WFC19:51, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know what you are meaning. In my browser all links work excellent. Which language have you selected? --Bene* (talk) 19:59, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
British English. Even if the toolbar link is fixed for those of us who speak the mother form of English, the redirects would still be helpful for users of all forms of the language who are in the habit of typing the page in the search bar. —WFC20:04, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Surely, but I just realize that it isn't possible to create a new page. You can only create items (also as autoconfirmed). Think you have to ask an administrator. --Bene* (talk) 20:08, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Redirected the talk page entry as suggested by WFC. Sorry, the true Main Page link will have to wait for somebody with more authority. Reedy, perhaps? MODCHK (talk) 06:46, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This seems to be the same problem we have for "pt-br". See below: #Portuguese_main_page. Helder 22:48, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia main page exemple

Copy from meta page draft

Hello, do you know the Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal ? It can perhaps show some design's exemple for the main page of wikidata. A Straw Poll is ongoing.

In the same idea, can I remplace the bottom section (the interwiki section) by the bottom section of w:Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal/Pretzels (or w:Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal/Nouill (alt. version of Pretzels design)) ? --Nouill (talk) 20:02, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support your version of the bottom section. --Stryn (talk) 08:11, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I did the following: User:Stryn/Sandbox. Do you like it? Could it be a new bottom section? Feel free to edit my sandbox if you know how to do it better. --Stryn (talk) 20:53, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... no answers... Preview is here: Finnish main page (see bottom section). --Stryn (talk) 13:25, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Portuguese main page

If I click in the logo, the site goes to a non existent page (with the message MediaWiki:wikibase-noitem, which is not very helpful in this case). The same happens if I click in the following link: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/?uselang=pt-br How can we get it to redirect to Wikidata:Página principal? Helder 14:16, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

"Statistics" in wrong language

I've set "pt-BR" in my language preferences and if I access Wikidata:Main Page, which is in English, I see the content of MediaWiki:Statistics/pt-br in the top right corner of the page (this comes from Template:Main Page/Header, where we have "[[Special:Statistics|{{int:statistics}}]]"). It should display MediaWiki:Statistics for consistency with the rest of the page. Helder 11:33, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm facing the same problem. My language preference setting is set to "English", but frequently visit Japanese Main Page (Wikidata:メインページ). In this case, ONLY "Statistics" is displayed in English and the others in Japanese. I believe that the label (display text) should be supplied as a parameter value in language versions of the main page such as Wikidata:メインページ rather than just using {{int:statistics}} in Template:Main Page/Header. -Penn Station (talk) 01:13, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think creating MediaWiki:statistics/fr, etc. would fix this. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:03, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhh, now I see the problem. We could use {{MediaWiki:statistics/<language code>}}. I'll see if I can fix that. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:17, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Added the {{{langcode}}} parameter to the Main Page/Header template. (see updated Template:Main Page/Header) PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:25, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's still the same. If you choose some language (like Finnish), "Tilastot" appears on any main page, when it should change on other language pages. --Stryn (talk) 20:42, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I fixed all the pages from Arabic to Italian. I did NOT fix any others yet, waiting for community response. Please reply, thanks, πr2 (tc) 21:45, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see, thank you! --Stryn (talk) 21:59, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done for all. --Stryn (talk) 12:40, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, PiRSquared17. I have updated Wikidata:メインページ to to display "Statistics" in Japanese by supplying langcode=ja for {{Main Page/Header}} there and it now works fine:). --Penn Station (talk) 09:48, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably worth a Main Page mention? —WFC17:10, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been bold and had a go. —WFC18:55, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe we could make a "milestones" page? On the Finnish Wikipedia we have w:fi:Wikipedia:Virstanpylväät (Engl. Milestones). I think it makes no sense to list the milestones in the main page (in the future). --Stryn (talk) 08:37, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think milestones will be a much bigger deal once we're at the point when they only happen once every few years. --Yair rand (talk) 08:52, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, we shouldn't have all these red links on the top of the main page. Whilst they encourage people to create new articles, they are probably not the most aesthetically pleasing way of encouraging growth. Does anyone else think we should remove them? PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:01, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I don't think we should remove them. While I also find them unattractive, I take those redlinks as an indication that we have yet to attract sufficient active editors from languages such as Malayalam and Hebrew. —WFC10:03, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is better to use the translate extension for this page. Helder 15:38, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikivoyage

Could someone please add Wikivoyage to the footer of sister projects? I don't manage to change that complicated template, which I think is a bad sign. :( – Thx, anyway. --Aschmidt (talk) 02:32, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I thought Wikivoyage wasn't officially launching until December? It doesn't even have an official logo yet. --Yair rand (talk) 02:57, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It does have seven language projects right now in the beta phase that are open to registering and editing (de, en, fr, it, nl, ru and sv). The logo is still undecided right now, but all the languages are using the old logo temporarily until a new one is done being voted on. We can replace it once it's official. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 03:01, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How do i use that? Can i link a specific Q to a Wikivoyage page already? Or even import interwiki from there? Mutante (talk) 15:38, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interwiki is d: to link here from Wikivoyage and voy: to link there from here; I haven't tried "a specific Q" but I presume this should work from any WMF project? K7L (talk) 15:45, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks, i actually expected it to be "voy" and liked that better than just "y", but how do i technically add such a link to a page here, say to link from Q365 to voy:Cologne?. The interwiki links sure work here in Talk text, but i wanted to add it as actual data. Cheers, Mutante (talk) 15:54, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's currently not possible. Only links to Wikipedia articles can be added. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Like Lydia said, it's currently a technical impossibility to link a wikivoyage (or any other sister project other than Wikipedia) to a Wikidata data page. I'd like to think it's being discussed (or considered) being in future versions of WD software. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 22:42, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikivoyage has not officially launched (it's in beta), so a link shouldn't be added; it's not supposed to be publicized yet. sumone10154(talk) 05:47, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Milestones

Is it really necessary to add 175k items as a milestone? I wouldn't consider it one. sumone10154(talk) 20:21, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We can but than we should not add 200.000 because it is endless to add every new item with little more zeros. --Bene* (talk) 20:46, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
200k will replace 175k.[4] --Stryn (talk) 20:48, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying that, Stryn. —Theopolisme 20:54, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I think that's ok :-) --Bene* (talk) 20:56, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On a related point, is there any alternative way of starting a milestone sentence? The "Item ID (number)" format is starting to look a bit dull now. —WFC05:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, "label became the XXth item on Wikidata, just X days after opening!" "Humans and bots alike have collaborated to now add 200K items to Wikidata, the 200000th of which is about description." Etc, etc. —Theopolisme 12:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds really good. I like those sentences. Please add more of them ;-) --Bene* (talk) 16:33, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way of tracking exactly how many items we have? It's just that I have noticed a few gaps. Q193951, Q193952 and Q193953, for instance. I can't see any log actions to explain why they're not there? —WFC21:41, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The IDs have been "swallowed" by unsuccessful attempts to create an item. --Kolja21 (talk) 00:49, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts on the news

Am I alone in thinking that Q400000 should be removed? For me, the point of posting milestones is not to give kudos to individual items (if it was, we should have posted the number of the beast), but to emphasise Wikidata's rate of growth. This, in my opinion, would be best achieved through 250k, 500k, 750k and 1M – the rate at which items are being created is still accelerating, and this would be bourne out in the decreased gaps between each milestone.

Hopefully we will start getting some non-Q news over the coming couple of months. For instance, Hungarian deployment + them starting to use the Wikidata language links, phase two being launched, Hebrew deployment (followed by English and full rollout), the first set of admin reconfirmations, data-related milestones and so forth. —WFC11:51, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Maybe we could try something like this for the milestones. It is only a draft. Let me know your opinions, and we could move my subpage to another place. --Stryn (talk) 12:26, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, 400,000 items isn't a milestone. sumone10154(talk) 21:41, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's regular news business. Nobody is saying that 400,000 items is a milestone, but if there are no other news (like Hungarian deployment) it's the most important news we've got. Probably this is more relevant stuff. --Kolja21 (talk) 22:05, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Milestone straw poll

What's done is done, but moving forward, can I pre-emptively suggest that Q750000 and Q1000000 be our next milestones? Assuming that we carry on at the same rate as the past few days, we would create Q750000 on approximately 11th/12th December, and Q1000000 roughly a week before Christmas. If the rate of growth accelerates, we would post them even sooner. Given where we are with development, there are likely to be one or two non-Q pieces of news in that time period anyway. —WFC11:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  1.  Support as proposer. —WFC11:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I think we should go straight from 500k to 1 million, similar to going from 50k to 100k. It's not a milestone if the article count goes up 50% in five days. --- Ypnypn (talk) 16:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translate extension

The main page should be moved to translate extension. It shouldn't be too hard given the structure, normal page translation without templates should do it and then some copy and paste will be needed. Nemo 18:58, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is what should be done. When I created Template:MainPageLanguages, the translate extension was not enabled. However, with Translate, outdated translations are marked red (fuzzy). This usually helps to fix them, but I think fuzzy text on the Main Page won't look so good. πr2 (tc) 16:29, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any way that that could be fixed? Maybe with CSS? --Yair rand (talk) 11:05, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, with something like .page-Wikidata<put every translation of the page name here> .mw-translate-fuzzy { background-color: #FFF; } in the global Common.css. Translators can then override it in their own Common.css
Best regards — Arkanosis 11:38, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why should we translate the Main Page? Commons does not translate the main page too. --Sk!d (talk) 11:45, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata, like Commons, is multi-lingual; actually I would prefer for Commons' main page to be translated too, though I'm not really familiar with how Commons decided this.--Jasper Deng (talk) 19:25, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike global guidelines like Wikidata:Notability there is no reason why the content should be the same in every languages. I would prefer it if the layout would be the same, but if e.g. a language have a language own Taskforce like Wikidata:Labels_and_descriptions_task_force/de and other languages don't have them this would be problem. Other languages might also set there focus different. If there will be something like "Item of the Day" this could be handled with templates just like on Commons. --Sk!d (talk) 20:12, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done I made a slight change the header size since ours was much larger than other projects. Ours was 220, while the English Wikipedia's was 165 and Commons is 150 by comparison. I standarized it to "Welcome to Project," at the top like the others, and added the number of items we have, per your suggestion. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 17:36, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

January 4, 2013 news bit

I'm not sure we should be reporting the Q data entry number in the news.

  • January 4, 2013: Periphragella elisae, a species of sponge, is created as Wikidata's 2,500,000th item.

This is accurate to the extent that it is Q2500000, but we only have 2227453 that exist as of this writing. It's a bit misleading. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 17:42, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Correct, and in the past I rephrased them for accuracy. I haven't edited this one because I believe it should be removed – increasing the Q number by 500,000 just isn't news anymore – but don't have the energy to get into a debate whether or not to remove one piece of non-news in the absence of true news. If anyone agrees that it should be removed, go for it. —WFC10:27, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Milestone straw poll 3

Balancing

The page was starting to look rather imbalanced toward the right side (strange, since Wikimedia projects are normally more partial to the left ). And since the Jan. 13 and Jan. 30 entries in WD:News both cover two events, I figured we could sacrifice the Jan. 4 entry. If anyone feels very strongly about this, they should feel free to revert me, but we're already talking about minimizing the number of "milestone" entries, so I didn't think it would be all too controversial. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 07:30, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We could also get rid of the "list of mayors" news. Then we could expand the "Contribute" and "Use Wikidata on your wiki" sections. Sound too radical? πr2 (tc) 17:44, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Balance That makes sense to me, especially since the news section is more-or-less trivial, but contributing and re-using the data are pivotal. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:49, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say that we should either expand the left-side stuff or remove the "list of mayors" entry, but not both... but don't care particularly either way; the more important thing is that the "Use Wikidata on your wiki" section is far too jargon-y, and could definitely use some TLC. Also, I'm going to add a link to the glossary in "Contribute". (Oh, btw, sorry to see the article on you got deleted from frwiki, Justin.) — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 14:16, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The item-number milestones are not really important news. Besides, they're only interesting if you use base 10 (decimal). :P But, more seriously, something needs to be done. The news and up-do-date sections are too much longer than the left side. (Oh, btw, what article on frwiki ?) πr2 (tc) 02:54, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Trivia It's true that 3.5 million, 4 million, etc. are increasingly trivial. What's important is that a critical mass is being reached and between actual human users and (semi)-automated edits, this is becoming a useful database. And for what it's worth, he means w:fr:Justin Knapp. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:46, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@PiRSquared It occurs to me that as phase II gets more and more intricate, we could wind up at a point where we had featured items, which could actually solve layout problems (we'd move "Use Wikidata" on your wiki to the right column or the bottom). @Justin Haha yeah. Stumbled on that going through the frwiki deletion logs :( Well, at least you can use Wikidata to track what 'pedias you're on now. (Oh, and I agree with your point re the significance of arbitrary numbers.) — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 20:33, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Our other "Main Page"

I think it's good to somehow incorporate Q5296 into the page. I'm a strong proponent of finding convenient ways to demonstrate uses of Wikidata to newcomers (e.g. linking to the items on "free content", "knowledge base", "Hungarian Wikipedia", etc., instead of linking to Wikipedia articles), and since Q5296 is one of the only items that we have links to all 285 'pedias for, it's pretty much an exemplary case. And, of course, it has a nice recursive feel - Hey, this is the main page of a knowledge base... Wanna see how the knowledge base works? Well look at how it lists the main pages of all these other projects. Here's my first go at referencing it... thoughts? Bold edits to the main page are fun for all, so anyone should feel free to revert me, or to move the link somewhere else, without discussion. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 14:24, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest I think this recursive thing is bad. When people have a hard time understanding something then being clever like this makes it even harder for them. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:11, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If y'all really think it's too confusing, then remove the link, I guess. That said, it got enough traffic that we had to semi it, so clearly people are at least clicking on it. (Incidentally, I've added a link to the mainspace sandbox to try to reduce the frequency of test edits to higher-profile pages.) — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 10:31, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Catalan language

I was in a random page, in Enter description / More languages / Select language and I did not find Catalan, my language, in the European languages section. You can blame me for creating Template:MainPageLanguages. In fact, it was originally created in a sandbox on Wikidata's launch date (see first section of this talk page), following #How_to_translate_the_main_page_in_other_languages.3F. I created it as a temporary solution, before the Translate extension was enabled here. I would certainly support the migration to the Translate extension. I'm not sure. It's actually an interesting case, so part of me thinks we should keep it up as a little window into the tech side of things. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 06:53, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry for this technical question, but I can not modify Wikidata links in my browser (Opera 9.27; yes, it is out-of-date, and my PC with 256 MB RAM is out-of-date too). Perhaps the source of this problem is JavaScript incompatibility (Wikidata editing pages contain pseudo-links 'edit' and 'add' to be processed by JS; however, I see no effect when clicking on them; it works neither with JS enabled nor with JS disabled). Is it possible to switch Wikidata to simplified mode with minimal technical requirements? Now the only way for me to connect articles in different languages is adding old-school interwiki links into articles for each language. P.Y.Python (talk) 01:14, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can't add/edit Wikidata links without JavaScript, but you can edit labels, descriptions and aliases without JavaScript on Special:SetLabel, Special:SetDescription and Special:SetAliases.--Snaevar (talk) 11:29, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your answer, but can it be useful if I want to interconnect a Ukrainian article with the similar English one, or to correct a wrong Ukrainian-English link? That's the only thing that I usually require. Is it possible to do it by adding labels or aliases only (if I know wikidata ID referring to the English page)? P.Y.Python (talk) 00:34, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. You may have to report them to WD:Interwiki conflicts, and ask for someone with JavaScript to do it for you. Delsion23 (talk) 10:30, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bots forcing Wikidata

What is this? Now the bots that previously update iws are changing iws to Wikidata links? What happened to the idea that every wiki could - if needed - override Wikidata? Is it now so that all iws are converted by bots to Wikidata? You know that bots can do a lot of damage in a very short time if they are doing something they were not supposed to do. So if this complete conversion of iws to Wikidata was not planned, why is it executed now? And if it was planned, why did you not say it straight out?--Nedergard (talk) 17:02, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What are you talking about? --FischX (talk) 21:48, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata was announced last year and has been advertised on the village pump of every Wikipedia language edition. It is possible for any Wikipedia editor to override Wikidata by using this magic word. Overall, the movement of links from the Wikipedias to Wikidata is a good thing for the Wikimedia project as it centralises all the links rather than have them hosted on each language edition individually. Delsion23 (talk) 10:23, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Protecting

I disagree with all those mass-protections of "vulnerable" pages; on many projects, the MPs are still unprotected and so it's proven to work well. IMHO full protection shouldn't be used in such cases (unless the page is vandalized); maybe semi-protection would be enough. --Ricordisamoa 05:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We just got hit with some template vandalism where templates that were transcluded on the Main Page were vandalized, resulting in the Main Page being vandalized. Since we're now in the top 10 for largest WMF wikis, I think this is necessary. --Rschen7754 05:37, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Main page is currently semi-protected, with all of the templates full protected. This might be lowered at a future date, however right now the protection is justified. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's actually fullprotected now. --Rschen7754 05:42, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just did a bit of research... going off the Meta info pages since vvv's tool is down, the only Wikipedia with more than 50 admins where the page is unprotected is the Russian Wikipedia. And there they have pending changes on the Main Page. We have roughly 60 admins right now... --Rschen7754 05:54, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merci encore ! 109.21.177.42 11:23, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Better example than Wikipedia's "Main Page"

Currently, we are using Q5296 (Main Page) for the "See Wikidata in action" example. But now that we have properties and whatnot, an item which almost exclusively consists of language links and a few aliases doesn't really showcase Wikidata's features. So how about Q52 (Wikipedia) instead? --Tobias K. (talk) 21:22, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

 Support. Regards, FrigidNinja 20:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lydia and I talked about this ages ago. She and I had the idea of a semi-official "featured item". It wouldn't be anything fancy, like TFA on Wikipedia, but it would just be something that would get updated every day or two, perhaps not even requiring a vote; any good-faith contributor would be allowed to put up an item they think reflects well on the project, and after a while it would be changed out. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 05:03, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not a bad idea. For me, just having a decent static example is good enough, so I won't put effort into it, but a "featured item" makes sense and based on our sister projects' front pages I guess we will eventually have something like that. --Tobias K. (talk) 19:15, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The community was split over this issue - see Wikidata:Project chat/Archive/2013/04#Featured Items. I agree that it shouldn't be too fancy, as that was a reason cited by opposers in that discussion.--Jasper Deng (talk) 19:19, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought I'd let someone know that I was on the English WikiSpecies Main Page at: http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Clicking the WikiData link at the bottom of that page took me to http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Main_Page. That page, in turn, has been deleted without a redirect:

This page has been deleted. The deletion and move log for the page are provided below for reference.
20:13, 26 October 2012 Reedy (talk | contribs) moved page Main Page to Wikidata:Main Page without leaving a redirect

Now, I'm not even going to pretend to understand the issues (technical or otherwise) surrounding this problem, which seems to have been around since October... I see a bunch of internationalization chatter above, and I also see bug references – but I gotta ask: Is this by design? Would a redirect link at Main Page cause something else to break? Is there no workaround?

Please don't take my questions as though I'm trying to be cynical or sarcastic – I'm just used to the mindset that failing to land "legacy" inbound links to one's homepage is a failure to be avoided at all costs, and that you cannot expect the calling site (sister project or not) to "correct" their links... Grolltech (talk) 09:06, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The word twelveth is an archaic form of twelfth. The phrase eleventh-millionth plus one should be phrased as eleven-millionth-plus one.

CC0 is not a license

In the footer it states, "All structured data from the main and property namespace is available under the Creative Commons CC0 License". Should be changed to ".. under the Creative Commons CC0 public domain waiver" or otherwise use the CC0 tool to obtain and implement alternative suggested text: http://creativecommons.org/choose/zero/

If we're aiming for precise terminology, then I think "public domain dedication" might be better than "public domain waiver".
