W3C Process

W3 NOTE process

In the course of this work the Consortium may make available on the web information, ideas or commentary from W3C staff, members, or the general public. Such information may be released, at the discretion of the W3C Director, as a NOTE.

When published as a NOTE, the document will be allocated a name consisting of the word NOTE followed by a date code.

	NOTE-name
This name will be used to refer to the latest version of a note, whilst at any time a specific version is identified by a date code, for example
	NOTE-FOOBAR-960235
The publication of a NOTE by the Consortium implies no endorsement of any kind. (It is even quite possible for ideas considered harmful to be published in order to promote discussion.) Neither does a NOTE indicate that any resources at W3C are allocated to the issues addressed by the NOTE.

"Status of this document" section

The section entitled "status of this document must be put at the beginning of the document after the principle heading. It should include two parts. The first is mandatory, and takes of two forms. If the document was authored within the W3C staff,
This document is a NOTE made available by the W3 Consortium for discussion only. This indicates no endorsement of its content, nor that the Consortium has, is, or will be allocating any resources to the issues addressed by the NOTE.
or in the case of a document prepared not authored by W3C staff,
This document is a NOTE made available by the W3 Consortium for discussion only. This indicates no endorsement of its content, nor that the Consortium has had any editorial control in it preparation, nor that the Consortium has, is, or will be allocating any resources to the issues addressed by the NOTE.
The second part is optional, but should be a frank statement of the purpose of publication where this will help guide the public. Examples might be
This document represents an early attempt to discuss the issues of diversification of archival retrieval reinsurance protocols which the Consortium is not working on at present but would like to bring to the community's attention.
or
This document describes an experimental architecture differing significantly from the W3C's architecture for embedding obsolete computer simulations in virtual viewwalls, and is made available for comparison purposes. Section 6 is particularly relevant to the choices made in W3C-REC-20210621.
or
This document was referred to in advisory committee meetings last June and is made available here for convenience.

New versions

The authors of documents may (at the discretion of the W3C Director) submit new versions to correct errors in NOTEs without substantial changes to the issues addressed.

Old versions will normally be kept available under the date coded name.

Reformatting

The Consortium reserves the right to reformat NOTEs at any time, including changing the "Status of this document" section and the document style, so as to conform to changes in Consortium practice.
