Top DIY & Home Posts of 2021
The top most popular DIY tutorials, home decor articles, organizing ideas and printables from this year on The Happy Housie.
I shared a lot of details about our life in 2021 last week when I shared my annual free printable family planner organizing calendar. It was definitely a year for the books in many ways, between finishing our new build, moving, losing our pup, and settling into our new home (and not even mentioning the constant changes in our lives due to the pandemic). I didn’t post anywhere near my typical level of home decor articles and DIY tutorials as I have in previous years, but now that things are more settled all of that is about to change.
I’m excited about several new projects that are on the horizon in our house and looking forward to customizing it further step-by-step. I also have several past DIYs and projects that I plan to share the details about that I didn’t manage to get to sharing in 2021. In addition to sharing content related to our home, I continue to work towards earning an Associate Degree in Interior Decorating through Yorkville University. I’ve learned a lot and have all kinds things I want to share with you over the coming months! We’ve also decided that the time is ripe to tackle the Ten Week Organizing Challenge again in this house, and I’ll be walking through that process over the next couple of months.
Today I’ve joined some of my blogging friends who are also sharing their top posts from 2021. If you’ve hopped over from Leslie at Deeply Southern Home, then welcome! Next up after me on today’s hop is Tanya at Dans le Lakehouse. Be sure to visit the links to everyone’s top posts at the bottom of today’s article.
And now for my top DIY and home decor articles, organizing ideas and printables from this year, in order of popularity. I’m counting them down, Letterman style…

After installing Golden Select Vinyl Plank in the basement of our previous house, both directly over tile as well as over concrete we became pretty fond of this product. We decided to do almost our entire new build house in vinyl plank for several reasons, which I shared in this post…

My 2021 Printable Calendar and Family Planner/Organizing Calendar was another popular post with readers and followers, and I recently shared my updated 2022 version in this article. I love using this calendar each year, and order the large size to be printed at my local Staples. Pop over here to learn how to download your own copy!

When it came time for a spring home tour this year we were smack dab in the middle of finishing our new build and moving, so I wasn’t able to share a brand new spring tour. Instead I shared my favourite ideas from seasons past for simple spring decor ideas that are easy and budget friendly.

The first big decor project that I tackled in our new build was installing grasscloth wallpaper and decorating our primary bedroom. We started with a beautiful new rug that I shared about in this post and built the bedroom color and decor scheme from there.

Having this front porch to decorate has been one of my favourite parts of our new build house, and our Modern Farmhouse fall front porch decor was a very popular post this past season…

I also shared all of the details about our exterior door hardware and tips for choosing the right style of door hardware for your front door in this post. We partnered with Schlage on the hardware for both our interior and exterior doors and I couldn’t be happier with it. I actually shared a mini home tour featuring all of our interior hardware here on Instagram.

Free printables are always a hit on my blog, and I love creating and sharing them with my email subscribers! This year I shared two new Christmas decor printables (and one set of printable gift tags) in this article where I featured all of the free holiday printables that I have shared in year’s past!

Probably my favourite little easy DIY of the year is the makeover that I gave some thrift store vases with homemade baking soda paint. I can see these beauties being featured on our mantel for months to come, and want to try this again with some different colors of homemade baking soda paint. Get the full tutorial in this post.

In our new build we worked with a talented local kitchen company to design a 3-tone modern farmhouse style kitchen with both colour and the warmth of wood. We love how it turned out and I shared all the details about it in this article.

One of my favourite posts to write, perhaps ever, was this review of our entire Forest house pre and post renovation. After a very messy 18 months of renovating this home, it was wonderful to look back and see all of the amazing changes that took place. As lovely as living in a new build can be, I kind of miss the satisfaction of a renovation! I’m not sure I’m done with renos just yet…

Creating a paint color scheme that flows comfortably and naturally from room to room is definitely one way to create a feeling of calm and cohesion in your decor. I shared our whole home paint color scheme featuring Benjamin Moore Paint Colors in this post featuring the colors we used in our Forest House.

And… always a hot topic on my blog, is the fabulous Ikea Pax system. I love Pax and have used it extensively in all of our homes. I am looking forward to sharing how we used it in our new build walk-through closet. My most popular post published in 2021 was how we replaced our reach-in closet with an Ikea Pax built in closet system. It was such an awesome use of space!
