Egg McMuffin (McDonald’s Copycat Recipe)
Make an Egg McMuffin (in minutes!) with this easy copycat recipe, featuring a perfectly cooked egg, melty cheese, and Canadian bacon on a toasted English Muffin!
BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL SANDWICH
If you’re a fan of the iconic Egg McMuffin from McDonald’s but don’t want to hit the drive thru or just want to try your hand at making them at home, then you’re in the right place. You can’t go wrong with an egg sandwich for breakfast! Plus, you can make a bunch of these and pop them into the freezer so you always have some on hand when you need a grab and go breakfast!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
No, but if you’re going for the McDonald’s copycat, you’re going to want to use English Muffins. Biscuits or bagels also work great for this.
You’ll see in my image below, I didn’t use any egg rings, I just used a biscuit cutter. Don’t worry and don’t let that stop you from making your own breakfast sandwich. A mason jar ring or an open biscuit cutter work as well.
If all else fails, make your eggs as normal, then use a large mouth cup to act as a cookie cutter and cut your egg into circles that way for your sandwiches. Or, just let the egg be the size it wants to be when cooking – no one says the egg has to be perfectly circular. When there’s a will, there’s a way!
I’d recommend keeping these in an airtight container or tightly wrapped with plastic wrap or foil and keep them in the fridge for up to 3-5 days.
YES! This is a fantastic meal prep recipe. Make a bunch of these sandwiches ahead of time and freeze them by wrapping tightly with plastic and foil before placing in a freezer safe container or freezer safe bag for up to 1-3 months.
You can let sandwiches thaw in fridge overnight before reheating, or just pop them frozen in the microwave for a few minutes, until warmed through again.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)
- butter – you can use margarine if you prefer.
- English muffins – you can use whole wheat or gluten free.
- Canadian bacon – Walmart, Kroger, Target, etc. all carry Canadian bacon but any other bacon will work just fine (it will just need to be cooked). You can also just use ham if you prefer.
- eggs – you can even scramble the eggs instead of frying them if you prefer the texture of a scrambled egg.
- American cheese– this is the classic, ooey gooey, melty cheese that they use on the original. Use whatever cheese you enjoy!
HOW TO MAKE AN EGG MCMUFFIN
Slice open the english muffins and toast them. If using an oven, toast for 5-6 minutes at 350F. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt about 2 Tablespoons of butter. Cook the Canadian bacon until warmed through and lightly browned on both sides. While the Canadian bacon is cooking, remove the English muffins from the toaster (or oven) and lightly butter the insides.
Place 1 slice of Canadian bacon on the bottom half of each English muffin. Grease the egg rings (or biscuit cutters or mason jar rings) with nonstick cooking spray. Melt remaining butter in the skillet. Place the greased egg rings into the skillet and crack one egg into each. Gently break the yoke with a fork.
Pour the ½ cup of water into the skillet around the egg rings and cover with a lid. Cook on medium low heat until the eggs are set, about 2-3 minutes. Gently remove the rings from the eggs and place the eggs on top of each piece of Canadian bacon. Top each egg with a slice of American cheese, and place English muffin tops back onto the sandwich.
Allow cheese to slightly melt before serving or return to the oven if using for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese. Serve warm and enjoy!
