Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS)

What is DTS ? The Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) is a Group of applications and related displays that Create a training environment. In this environment the Dispatcher can practice routine and emergency Tasks.

DTS Power Flow

DTS Powerflow calculates the state of the Electrical network based on Network topology changes
Load Schedules Prime mover mechanical power
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Power Flow

Dynamics updates mechanical power input from the prime movers to the generators once every integration time step Powerflow(PF) typically runs 8 to 10 seconds. However it can be varied by the instructor. Voltage and over-current relays are evaluated after each PF solution
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Power Flow

Frequency relays are evaluated after each dynamics solution The simulation solution is not complete until there is a PF solution that does not cause further topology changes.

Instructor tools

Load and initialize DTS databases in the DTS environment - From modeling applications - Snapshots from real-time to start Save, Retrieve and DTS save cases Start, stop or pause the simulation Set or reset simulation time Define and modify event scenario
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Events

The instructor set up scenarios including events such as Breaker (Equipment outage, relay actions) - trip / close - inhibit / enable control Generator - MW change - Set voltage
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Events

Load change (+ / -) - bus - load areas

Telemetry - point ( IN / OUT of scan ) - RTU ( IN / OUT of Service)

EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Events

Using these predefined events the instructor can simulate the actions of - Power plant and substation operators - Operation of protective devices - Acts of nature Dispatcher trainees learn how to respond to these actions while the instructor evaluates their progress.
EMS Group - LD&C

Assessment of trainee performance

Logs of training session - Trainees actions - Other operators action - Instructors interventions - Alarm lists Possibility to play-back the training session Production cost Statistics on operating reserve Statistics on load shedding
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Uses

Primary use: Training of Dispatchers for routine and emergency scenario in a controlled and safe off-line manner
Network split, blackouts Large voltage or frequency excursions
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Uses Other uses: Engineering tool for operations planning (generation plans, network switching, etc..) and for understanding of power system behavior. Tuning of EMS applications (Network, Generation etc.) Test bed for new EMS functions
EMS Group - LD&C

DTS Uses Other uses (continued): Validating new databases before upgrading EMS Factory acceptance tests Demonstrations
