What is language
acquisition?

Language acquisition is the process by


which humans acquire the capacity to
perceive and comprehend language (in
other words, gain the ability to be aware
of language and to understand it), as well
as to produce and use words and
sentences to communicate.
Behaviorist Theory

The theory of behaviorism highlights aspects of language


behavior that can be observed directly and the relationship
between stimulus and response. Effective language behavior
is making appropriate reactions to stimuli. This reaction will
become a habit if the reaction is justified. At this time the
child learns his first language.
Example of Behaviorist Theory

For example, a child says "bilangkali" for "barangkali". Of


course the child will be criticized by his mother or anyone
who hears the word. If one day the child pronounces
perhaps correctly, he will not get criticism because his
pronunciation is correct.
Nativism Theory

Noam Chomsky put forward his theory that language


acquisition in a person or child is innate, because he is
provided with a language acquisition tool which is then
known as the Language Acquisition Device (LAD), all children
will acquire language in the same portion, this does not exist
relationship with other cognitive factors such as IQ.
Example of Nativism Theory

Gene factors from both parents that encourage a talent that


emerges from the child. An example is if the child's parents
are smart, then the child will have a smart character as well.
Cognitivism Theory

This theory breaks the assumption that language ability is an


ability from birth, but can be learned and continues to
develop between cognitive levels and the language
environment.
