TITLE: UTILIZING BANANA

STEM FIBER FOR SUSTAINABLE

ECO BAG PRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
a. Develop an assessment of the physical and
mechanical properties of banana stem fiber to determine
its suitability as a raw material for eco-bag production.
b. Evaluate the environmental impact of using banana
stem fiber for eco-bags compared to traditional
materials like plastic and cotton.
c. Investigate methods to enhance the efficiency of eco-
bag production using banana stem fiber.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
• The importance of this study rests in its potential to
minimize plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
by substituting eco-friendly bags manufactured from
banana stem fibers for plastic bags. Additionally, it
encourages garbage recycling, environmentally
responsible consumer choices, and job possibilities in
sustainable businesses, all of which help to create a more
sustainable future.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
• The scope of this research is centered on utilizing
banana stem fibers exclusively in the production of
eco-friendly bags, with a focus on their
environmental impact within a specific community. It
does not explore the use of other plant materials as
alternatives, limiting the scope to banana stem
fibers.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH DESIGN

• The research uses an experimental approach to test

the feasibility and effectiveness of employing banana
stem fibers as a sustainable alternative to plastic in
the production of eco-friendly bags. This study aims
to systematically investigate the process of creating
and implementing these banana fiber eco-bags, with
a focus on waste reduction and their potential as a
substitute for traditional paper bags.
RESEARCH LOCALE
• This study will be conducted at Barangay
Dagatkidavao, Valencia City Bukidnon.
• Researchers are sourcing banana stem fiber from
Purok 5 Bantal, owned by the Loquinarios family, for
their study. They aim to explore its potential
applications. The team is currently collecting this
fiber and providing materials like sodium hydroxide,
screens, pans, wood, needles, and threads for
experiments. Their goal is to harness the properties
of banana stem fiber for innovative and sustainable
solutions in different fields.
• To produce eco-friendly banana stem fiber paper bags, you start by
cutting the fiber into small pieces and boiling them to soften. Sodium
hydroxide is added to further break down the fibers, followed by
straining to remove excess liquid and impurities. The fiber is then
blended, rinsed, and strained again for cleanliness. Finally, it's dried
in the sun and used to sew paper bags, providing an eco-friendly
alternative to traditional bags.
• The preparation of raw materials, such as banana stem fibers,
involves carefully selecting mature stems and cleaning them
thoroughly to remove any impurities like soil and debris that may

ANALYSIS
• In the analysis phase of our product development, several key tests and evaluations are necessary to ensure the
effectiveness and quality of the banana fiber eco-bags. These tests should encompass:
1. Strength and Durability Testing: Assessing the bags’ tensile strength and durability to determine their load-bearing
capacity and resilience in everyday usage.
2. Biodegradability Testing: Evaluating the decomposition rate of the bags in various environmental conditions to confirm
their eco-friendliness
3. Moisture Absorption: Measuring the bags’ ability to absorb and manage moisture to ensure they are practical for various
purposes.
4. Cost-Efficiency: Analyzing the production costs and comparing them to traditional plastic or paper bags to ensure
economic viability.
5. User Feedback and Acceptance: Gathering user opinions and feedback through surveys or focus groups to understand
the bags’ convenience, usability, and potential areas for improvement.
