Introduction to

Sagarmala Projects
The Sagarmala Programme is an initiative by the
Government of India to enhance the performance of the
country’s port logistics sector.
Vision and Background
1. The Sagarmala Programme aims to reduce logistics costs
and improve the efficiency of India's economy.
2. The National Perspective Plan for the development of
India's coastline and maritime sector was released at the
Maritime India Summit 2016.

3. The Sagarmala Programme is enabled by and benefits


from other key Government of India schemes like
Industrial Corridor, Make in India, and Digital India.
Key Pillars of Sagarmala
Port Modernization and New Port Development
The Sagarmala Programme focuses on modernizing existing ports and
developing new ports to enhance the performance of the country's logistics
sector.

Enhancing Port Connectivity


The programme aims to drive improvements in port connectivity through
initiatives like building road and rail linkages.

Port-led Industrialization and Coastal Community


Development
It also aims to promote port-led industrialization and the development of
coastal communities.

Coastal Shipping and Inland Water Transport


The Sagarmala Programme seeks to boost coastal shipping and inland
water transport to reduce logistics costs and improve efficiency.

Sagarmala promotes urban waterways passenger transportation like RoPax and passenger ferry services, which offer
benefits like reduced travel time, lower costs, and lower emissions.
National Maritime
Heritage Complex
at Lothal
The National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) is being
developed at Lothal, Gujarat to showcase India's rich
maritime heritage dating back over 4,500 years.

The complex will feature a museum with 14 galleries, Lothal


Town and Open Aquatic Gallery, Lighthouse Museum, and
recreation of the ancient Lothal city.

The project aims to boost tourism, generate employment,


and revive local businesses in the region.
