Operational Amplifiers
Introduction
 Studied Multiple Electronic Devices (Diodes, Transistors etc)
 Active devices individually packaged & interconnected with other
devices to form Functional Circuits
 Such Devices referred : Discrete Components
 Study of Linear Integrated Circuits (ICs), where Transistors,
Diodes, Resistors & Capacitors etc fabricated on Single Chip &
packaged to-gather to form Functional Circuit
 Integrated Circuits : Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp), treated as
a single device
 Concerned with Functional Viewpoint of IC rather than internal
components
Operational Amplifiers
Introduction
 Learn Basics of Op-Amps: Versatile & widely used ICs
 Study Open & Closed-loop Frequency Responses,
Bandwidth, Phase shift etc
 Examine effects of Negative Feedback
 Op-Amps initially used for Mathematical Operations
 Addition, Subtraction, Integration & Differentiation
 Constructed with Vacuum Tubes & worked with High
Voltages
 Op-Amps : Linear Integrated Circuits (ICs) :
 Use low DC Supply Voltages
 Reliable & Inexpensive

Selected Key Terms
Operational A type of amplifier that has very high voltage
amplifier gain, very high input impedance, very low
output impedance and good rejection of
common-mode signals.

Differential A mode of op-amp operation in which two

mode opposite-polarity signals voltages are applied
to the two inputs (double-ended) or in which a
signal is applied to one input and ground to the
other input (single-ended).

Common mode A condition characterized by the presence of

the same signal on both inputs
