CONSIDERATION
INTRODUCTION

 The temperate climate has mild to warm

summers and cool winters.

 The word temperate means moderate, or in the

middle. This cooler, the climate in the temperate
zone - it does not have extremes.

 It is a relatively comfortable climate, especially

near the coast, where summers are cooler, and
winters are warmer than further inland.

 Pune and Bangalore are cities that fall under this

climatic zone.
DESIGN CONSIDERATION

 Orientation : The building can be oriented a

few degrees to the east to capture sunlight
during the daytime .The building can be
extended in the east-west axis.

 Ventilation :The size of the windows should

be such that it captures the midday sun in the
winter while avoiding the harsh sun in the
summer. The windows on the west side can be
avoided. Overhang on windows should be
such that it prevents overheating in the
summer but allows low winter sun to
penetrate.
DESIGN CONSIDERATION

 Shading : Provide screened, shaded outdoor

living areas to allow winter sun penetration.
You can also use deciduous vegetation for
automatic shading discrimination between
winter and sum

 Landscaping : Deciduous trees are best

suited for temperate regions as they provide
shade during summers and shed their leaves
allowing the sun to shine through in the
winters.
CASE STUDY OF VILLA SAVOYE

 The Villa Savoye, designed by Le Corbusier

in 1928-31, is a quintessential example of
modernist architecture Located in Poissy, France

 It demonstrates Le Corbusier's "Five Points of

Architecture" and features innovative solutions
for natural light and ventilation. Here's a
focused case study on the natural light and
windows in the Villa Savoye:

 Designed as a weekend retreat for the Savoye

family . Embodies Le Corbusier’s vision of modern
architecture with a focus on opening, light, and
functional design
KEY FEATURES OF NATURAL LIGHT
& WINDOW

 The Horizontal Ribbon Windows : The Bank of

China Tower features a distinctive triangular
form, which is symbolic of the building's location
in Hong Kong.

 Ribbon windows : are a hallmark of modernist

design and one of Le Corbusier’s "Five Points of
Architecture.“ They create a continuous strip that
allows for expansive views and uniform daylight
penetration.

 The ribbon windows provide a panoramic view of

the surrounding landscape. They maximize
horizontal daylight distribution, reducing the
need for artificial lighting.
SKY LIGHT

 Villa Savoye incorporates strategically placed

skylights, especially in the rooftop solarium. These
openings ensure vertical daylight penetration into
spaces below.

 Provides top lighting for areas without direct

window access. Enhances the feeling of
openness and continuity with the sky.

 Large Glazed Openings: Ground-floor glazing

connects the interior to the garden, blurring
boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The glazed curtain wall integrates the building
with its environment while allowing abundant
light.
IMPACT ON INTERIOR SPACE

DAYLIGHTING

 Balanced light reduces shadows and enhances the

perception of clean, open spaces.

 Creates a dynamic play of light and shadow as the

sun moves throughout the day

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

 The interplay of light with materials like white

plaster emphasizes minimalism and purity.

 he illuminated interiors promote a serene and

modern living experience
CONCLUSION

Building design for temperate climates emphasizes comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. Passive
strategies like natural ventilation, thermal mass, and solar optimization reduce energy use.
Sustainable, well-insulated materials and renewable energy systems enhance performance. Adaptable
features, such as adjustable shading and flexible spaces, ensure year-round comfort. Thoughtful site
planning, including vegetation for shading and proper orientation, improves energy efficiency and well-
being, creating buildings that harmonize with seasonal changes and the environment.
