More challenges:
Insurance
• The insured value per kg is different for road transport than for shipping
o General coverage SDR 2/kg
o National road transport SDR 3.4/kg
o International road transport SDR 8.33/kg
Cases:
1. A truck with flowers is on a ferry to the UK.
a) The exportcompany has a contract with the trucking company
b) The ship capsisez. What amount is covered?
2. The value of the cargo is SDR 25/kg.
a) What steps can the carrier take?
3. The cargo is delivered at the wrong temperature.
a) The cargo is rejected? Who’s fault is it?
b) The receiver claims loss in revenue. What’s next?

Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Air transport
• Air transport is the fastest mode of transport
• The quantity of goods transported by air is still relatively small compared to the
carriage by sea (3% in volume / 30% in value)
• Vulnerable / perishable goods are moved this way.
• Special intermodal transport
o For instance from Asia to the Middle East by sea and thereafter by air to Europe.
Transport document:
• Airway bill
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Air transport
Characteristics of air transport
• Routes
o Mainly intercontinental, to utilise speed advantage
o Short distances are trucked, under air cargo conditions
• Requirements
o Main port with extensive destinations / connections
o Efficient + fast airport handling facilities
o Air cargo forwarder with fast declaration possibilities
o Fast connecting road collection / distribution services
• Cargo
o Urgent shipments & high value cargo
o Perishable (flowers, fruit and vegetables)

Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Road transport (services)
• Transport of refrigerated cargo
o Control of temperature and humidity. Requirements:
Vehicles must be in good condition
No daylight must be seen inside when doors closed
• Chartering
o The road charterer carries out for their clients road transport operations
that they entrust to third party carriers. Reasons to chose for chartering:
Diverse and widespread geographical coverage
Irregularity of goods flow: seasonal nature, various sized shipments, emergency
shipments and not be able to have a FTL (Full Truck Load)

Road transport
Road transport services
• Groupage
o The number of clients is high in a given area
o The goods are small in size
o There is a large number of goods

Distribution centres
• Trans loading
• Cross-docking

Road
Pros and cons of road transport
• Advantages
• Disadvantages
o Door-to-door
o Arrival may vary
o Flexible
o Using of public roads
o Flexible prices & negotiation
o Border crossing time consuming
o Lower prices than air and rail
o Convoys for security of cargo
o Good for small consignments
o Not appropriate for big loads
o Good for limited distance
o Valuable cargo, special conditions
o Low cost per cargo (not bulky)
26
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Maritime transport
Carriage of goods by sea
• A very cheap mode of transport, low speed
• Shipping contributed to an increase in world trade and globalisation
Transport modalities
Maritime transport services
• Liner shipping • Tramp shipping
o Regular service o Incidental service
o Fixed routes o Cargo determines route
o Fixed time schedules o Special cargo, liquid and dry
o General cargo and containers bulk
o Independent lines o Ship-owners, charterers
o Agents book capacity

o Bridges too low
o Environmental friendly
o River not deep enough

Transport modalities
Rail transport
• Rail transport is the least used mode of transport.
• USA and Europe give attention due to its environmental advantages.
• 600m shuttle trains in the transport between ports and inland terminals
• Ore, coal, grain and containers are railed.
• Silk route; overland from China to Europe (Khorgos movie)

37
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Advantages of rail transport
• Increased security of cargo
• Can transport large and heavy volumes
• Can transport over long distance
• Efficient operations multimodal transport
• Faster on some routes (compared to sea)
• Environmental friendly way of transport
• Reliability of operations (in most cases)
• Effectiveness when regular consignments
• Cheap in longer distance (>200 km)
38
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Disadvantages of rail transport
• Interoperability problems
• Relatively low network density
• Variations in technical and operational characteristics
• Severe delays (sometimes) at borders
• No single agent for door-to-door transport
• Intervention of several rail operators
• Necessity of two intermediate handlings
• Expensive for short distances
• Limitations to standardized units
39
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport modalities
Pipeline
• The most environmental friendly mode of transport is the pipeline.
• Big quantities are moved from the petro chemical industry to the hinterland, and
from the desert to the refineries
• Kerosene, Aircraft fuel is directly pumped to airports
• Natural Gas is distributed by an extensive pipeline network.
• All over the world
• NO paperwork
Intermodal & multimodal transport
Transport Modes
Questions:
• For each transport mode as discussed, explain
o For which commodity is each transport mode suitable?
o What are the characteristics
o The advantages and disadvantages
• When transporting grain from a point of origin to a port
o Which transport mode(s) would you use and why?
• When transporting flowers from one Africa to Europe
o Which transport mode(s) would you use and why?
• When transporting electronics from a factory (Asia) to a consumer (USA)
o Which transport mode(s) would you use and why?

I ntroduction
I n the past, changing modalities did not happen often because:
Since the introduction of the container (sixties) efforts were made to integrate the
various modalities. This was the start of intermodal / multimodal transport.
The integration of the container and thus intermodal transport happened in 4 steps:

Definition of multimodal transport
“International multimodal transport' means the carriage of goods by at least two
different modes of transport on the basis of a multimodal transport contract from a place
in one country at which the goods are taken in charge by the multimodal transport
operator to a place designated for delivery situated in a different country” (UN, 1980)
