Student Directions: Discuss each
question as a group. Use the spaces
provided to write a brief summary of
your discussion for each question.

Identify and discuss any examples of foreshadowing in the text. Use the TAG method to introduce the story and
‘flip’ the queston.
In “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl, he tells a short story about a woman who traps a young man in her home. There were
several examples of foreshadowing that should have warned the reader that she was going to kill and keep him. The first example of
foreshadowing was… another… the last… “A pretty little dachshund was curled up…” and “Animals were usually a good sighn
in a place like this,” and “The old girl is slightly dotty, Billy told himself.”

Identify any “red flags” in the story that caused Billy to hesitate about his decision to stay at the bed and
breakfast.
In the story it said

How do we make decisions about whom to trust? Give three examples about what YOU look for in someone who
you can trust.

I look for honesty, no mysteriousness, and certain kind gestures. We make decisions about who we trust
by seeing a person who doesn’t look shabby, mysterious, or dangerous in some ways.

Is Billy’s trusting nature a trait to be admired or scorned? Give three examples of how Billy’s decision making was
positive or negative.
It’s a trait to be scorned, because people lie to others everyday. Billy trusted the landlady in giving him
tea on page 5 on paragraph 5, it says “I didn’t mean you to do anything like that.” and let her make tea
for him. On page 2 of paragraph 16, it said “It was fantastically cheap. It was less than half of what he
had been willing to pay.” showed how gullible Billy is because of a cheap hotel.
Paranoia can be defined as “suspicion and mistrust of people or their actions without evidence or justification.”
How does the author incorporate paranoia into the plot or character descriptions?

The author makes the Landladies actions unpredictable, and it makes the readers question if the
landlady is nice or evil

How does the author’s decision not to include a clear resolution contribute to the plot?

It leaves me thinking if Billy got up and ran away, only to be affected by the cyanide. Or if Billy ran into
the room where the landlady says the kids are resting to find if they’re alive or stuffed.

Choose what you feel is an important quote in the story and discuss its significance.

“Try the bell and Dragon” is an important quote, because if Billy didn’t try to find the motel, he wouldn’t
have found the landlady's house.

a safe place to stay.
Billy took another sip of the tea and realized the landladies' true intentions. Billy jumped out of his
chair and dashed up the stairs to the fourth floor. As Billy got near the fourth floor, he felt dizzy. “Billy!
That’s not how you treat a provider.” the landlady yelled below the floor. Billy grabbed the doorknob
and threw it open. What he saw was irreversible. Billy saw two young men on chairs posed like they
were sipping tea. Billy shut the door and blocked it with a drawer and ran to the young men. They were
frozen and stuffed, he felt no warmth from the men, only cold skin and cotton. The landlady reached
the door and knocked “It’s going to be your turn soon to be part of my collection dearie. You will
succumb soon, and you will be frozen like the rest.” Billy felt dizzier. He looked around and found a
rope that was used to hold the young men up. Billy grabbed a vase that was resting on top of the
drawer and threw it at the window. The window shattered. Billy tied the rope onto a heavy chest and
threw the untied rope out the window. Billy jumped out the window with the rope in his hand and
walked down the wall. Billy heard the door bang and open. He could only think of escaping and running
to the to the bell and dragon. Billy got onto the floor and ran along the road to the bell and dragon.
Billy saw welcoming lights and a large building with a ‘bell and dragon’ sign on top. He got to the door
and groaned “Help me please.” He fell onto the floor. Billy didn’t die yet, he was frozen. A person
pulled him to an old man with a briefcase and said “This is doctor carl, he’ll help you.” The doctor
grabbed Billy’s wrist and felt around it. Doctor Carl opened his briefcase and gave Billy a shot in his
wrist. “You’ve been mildly poisoned, if not treated, it could’ve gotten worse.” Billy was still frozen,
though he was thankful. Billy started to move again. The door opened, the landlady opened the door.
“Such a bad boy Billy” the people in the bell and dragon gathered around Billy like they didn’t notice
the landlady. Billy pointed at the landlady and stuttered “S-she poisoned me.” the people turned back
to look at the landlady. “She’s a psycho. She takes young and eager men to add into her collection of
mannequins. Two boys went missing in her house. She was a retired taxidermy for animals before she
got interested in poisoning people and stuffing them. She usually stays in her house.” the people got
up and stopped the landlady from getting close to Billy. Billy didn’t understand why she would poison
people to stuff them. “Why would you do this?” Billy asked. The landlady didn’t look so old and frail
anymore, she started to look like a skeleton. She pushed people out the way and said “I need him for
my collection!” Carl tapped on Billy’s shoulder and said “Get behind the counter. Theres a secret
compartment that can open only once. We’ll hold her off. Do go on and live a nice life boy.” Billy was
flattered at his kindness. Billy thanked Carl and went into the hidden compartment. Billy shut the
entrance and saw the long tunnel and torches that led to somewhere. Billy was in disbelief some
people can be evil or nice to random people. Billy was ready for it.
