JOLLY PHONICS
Lesson 2
The Smith family is going on a picnic. The
Family picnic children help their mother pack the food. Adam
packs the
apples. Annie helps to make the jam sandwiches.
At last, they are ready and set off for the picnic.
When they arrive, they sit down and spread out a
cloth and lay the food on it. Annie rubs her arm.
“Something is tickling me,” she says. “Something
is tickling me, too,” says Adam, eating his apple.
“a,
a, a, ants!” shouts Annie. They all look at Annie
and see some ants crawling up her arm. They all
jump up. There are ants all over the picnic cloth!
“Oh dear,” says Dad. “We must have put our
cloth
over an ants’ nest.” They pack up their things and
move to a nicer spot
Other things in the picture with an /a/
sound are:
• Ants, hat, rabbit, can, jam, man, hand,
dad, sandwich, caterpillar.Now look at
the picture and ask who can point to the
‘a-n-t’, saying the word sound by sound.

emphasising the
first sound, and ask
the children if it
starts with /a/.
• If it does, ask one
of the children to
come up and shade
in the circle, using
‘Fill’.
• The word pictures
are: (top) sun, ant,
snail; (bottom)
apple, snake, arrow.
• You could repeat
the activity, this
time filling the /s/
words
Ant Maze Game
• The children must find
their way through the Ant
Maze. There are pictures at
each junction to help the
children choose the right
way.
• Ask some children to take
it in turns to draw part of
the path through the maze,
using the Pencil.
• When you come to a
junction, say each word with
the children, emphasising
the first sound, and ask
them whether it starts
with /a/ or /s/.
• The aim is to follow the
path of the /a/ words. If a
picture does not start
with /a/, you do not go down
that
path.
